How on earth is being able to choose your own gear cheating? :odd:

You can do it in a real car, you can do it in game, it's a well known trick to upshift early if you feel there isn't a lot of grip around.

I dont think I could drive auto... what would save me when I'm bouncing off the limiter with full lock and red tyres ?

then look down to see I'm stabbing the clutch pedal NOT the brake#!@

Auto- press gas pedal and hope for a win
Manual- Shifting with LR/paddles
True Manual- Using a wheel with a clutch and H-shifter

Use true manual :)

I'm DS3 user. I use auto everytime except when the lobby is "ABS off".
With ABS off, the manual gears are the best way to control the car in the apex; in any other situation I feel more comfortable with automatic gears.

I'm really not getting the "manual is a poor mans traction control" bit, mechanically speaking the reverse is true. As anyone who's deliberately tried to wheelspin an auto will testify. The function of the torque converter in and automatic transmission ptevents the spin, much the same as TC does.

You are kidding right?

It doesnt matter if a car is manual or automatic, you can spin the tires on any car that has enough power to do so.

Just because you're using an automatic in-game doesn't mean that the car is automatically fitted with a torque converter.

Manual will help your lap times considerably, as you can brake much quicker than normal, and you have complete control of your car.

Many of my friends play manual and they are better than me, I think manual or automatic the most important thing is to win the race... :):):):):)

yup. It doesn't matter whether you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning.

I'd say the benefits of having a manual are only really there if you know what your doing, I stick with auto because the game doesn't do a terrible job of changing gear and I can focus more on other things when racing. Perhaps if I used a wheel I'd used gears.

Face it, some people like to play GT5 as a game!!! Using assists does not make them any less "special" than you, but mocking them because they use them makes you an asshole. The OP asked if some races are that much more difficult or impossible when using the auto shift, and while I don't have an answer because I use manual, I'm not being an asshole by denegrating them for their desire to use assists or their inability to play without using assists. Learn to be people, people. Assholes do nothing but spew crap. Frankly, I'm thankful the OP didn't just post another wishlist or poll.

It could be something besides your transmission choice. Are you using any driving aids? Usually turning them off helps you achieve faster laps.

I was going to point this out. Even on auto, turning TC down, or even better off, should yield quicker times.

I have to agree with this, especially since one of the main functions of this site (and this thread in particular) is to help people learn how to play this game better and make it more fun. Better language should have been used, though. (please take no offense at this as it's just a fact, not a judgement, and I don't think you want your post deleted )

I'm well aware of the inappropriateness of the language used, and it was a stretch for me to use it on a forum, but I felt it necessary to put the exclamation point on what I was trying to say. Anything less would have seemed too playful and I wasn't willing to use anything more. Anyway, I appreciate your seeing the remark as it was intended. I get so sick and tired of people thinking they're that much better than others and not having the restraint to keep it off of what is supposed to be a beneficial forum.

Anyway, as for the topic at hand, I can't imagine using any assists being faster than not using assists if you can do so successfully. The actual assists such as traction control and stability control do nothing but reig the car in, and the auto shifting doesn't make the most of the cars' powerbands. It is a game, though, and I can see people wanting to just play the game without taking it as seriously as some of us.
