The reason I am starting this thread is because I am curious. If people use automatic or manual while playing with the DS3. I always play with a G27 and clutch until a couple of weeks ago. So I am used to changing gears.

But a couple of weeks ago I was doing my usual thing of buying cars and tuning parts with the controller which is how I do that stuff. I figured I would have a race online, but this time I went into a drift room and had a blast drifting with the DS3 and thought this is way easier. So I have been playing with the controller every day now and I am having a little more fun in automatic.

So my question is. Are you more comfortable shifting or not with a DS3? I have been liking not having to shift.

Edit: Oooh and what SimonK brought up. What buttons do you shift with?

Manual all the way. I find it improves immersion no end and can actually produce better lap times.

Shift, with the square and circle buttons. It'd be weird if I didn't, my right thumb would have nothing to do.

Normally a G25 user here.

I use the controller, when I can not set up my wheel or when I drift (wheel too noisy).
Shifting is defined on the right stick for me and I prefer to use it, I clearly make more mistakes then with the paddles on the wheel, but I prefer the control.

Also it seems easier in the licenses to get through with shifting on DS3.

That said I found in the 2010 Academy this result yesterday:
79 312 [Japan] Arcadia051 [Pad] [Automatic Transmission] 1'35.944 1'48.147 3'24.091

So some are a lot faster then me with a wheel.

PS: 312 is the world ranking!

Manuel definatly. I use a driving force,but when i did use the dualshock,I map gas and brake to the right analog,and shift to R2 and L2

I missed the choice: Depending on car.

For the low-hp cars with slow speeds I find it quite convenient to shift manual. For high-speed cars I rely on auto-trans due to somehow limited ergonomics of the DS3 - I mean it's a different story if one could use hands and feet for car control like IRL or have to rapidly find all theese tiny little buttons on the small controller :D :D

I find my lat times are getting better with my pad in automatic. I guess because I can just focus on the gas and brake and my line that shifting actually hinders me a little bit. I think this is happening because I don't like to pull my rig out of the garage everyday and put it back up in the evening. And I find it awkward to shift with all the buttons and not having a clutch.

What sprplay said!

Manual gears with DualShock since gt3,so much more fun
Feels weird playing it on auto ,but i do use auto for the formula one races

Manual since GT2. Still use the default triggers for shifting and buttons for gas/brake. Never progressed to using triggers or stick for gas and brake.

I use wheel for serious stuff though (when I get to set it up), and DS for drifting and some easy grinding when I get a few spare minutes.

Hey guys . I like it best on manual if using the DS3 , ( Usually use my DFGT though as i'm quicker with it ) .

The benefits of manual shifting I find are -
1. Better traction control , especially in the wet as you can shift up earlier to reduce wheelspin.
2. Better deceleration in the braking zones as you can downshift faster manually.

That's the 2 main benefits I experience . X and square buttons for gearshifting , triggers for accelerate / brake , plus directional buttons for side views.

:)👍

Depends on the car in question.

1) Cars with low power - Manual
2) Cars with lots of power - Automatic

I find GT5 to shift very well for the most part, so I don't bother.

I use a DS3, manual transmission and default setup. The main reason being due to the lineage of previous GT's. I have tried a wheel but I've become accustomed to the pad and just feel more comfortable. I guess if I want to use a wheel I may as well pick from the two I have outside attached to real cars. One of which is a DSG GTI so is similar to shifting using the shoulder buttons on the pad!
It's similar in IL2 (reference for trk!!), whilst I have a stick I only ever use it in sim dogfights, the rest of the time I use a DS3.

Manual. But I think I'm one the only ones to shift with the right analog stick. Shift up is down on the analog and shift down is up. I guess to simulate an actual shift with the stick.

On many cars power drops noticeably way before the redline (especially when low rpm turbo kits are installed), therefore, putting aside the added control, manual is the choice whether I'm using a DS3 or a wheel.

I use the X button for upshifting, the Square button for downshifting. Throttle/brakes with R2 and L2 respectively.
Steering: left analog stick, Reverse: Right analog stick Back direction
Handbrake: R1, Horn: Circle, Flash light: Triangle

I voted for manual, but I actually use both. Generally for offline races and testing etc I use the automatic. Online though, where things are actually more competitive, I use the manual shifting. Some cars are an exception to this though, although it's only those that have a stock "automatic" drive, such as the GTR Concept, which I use like this for the shorter drag races.
I have the L2 & R2 mapped for acceleration and braking, and the gears are mapped to the right hand stick (up and down) Although mine's the opposing way round to Gtmail, Up to shift up, and, well you get the picture >:0)

Manual, using classic GT controls with L2/R2 as a flappy paddle gearbox. :lol:

Manual.

I find that I have better control of cars and get usually post higher lap times. On low power cars, you can hold a gear longer to stay in the powerband of the motor. And on high power cars, you can exit a corner in a higher gear to reduce wheelspin on exiting.

I don't know how people can drive F1 cars on automatic.

Only started using manual in GT5 but now I can't drive very well in automatic. I feel that being able to stay in what gear you want means you can control the car through corners easier and often improves braking distances.

I've used manual since GT1, and have never looked back.

left analogue stick is for steering, right analogue for acceleration and brakes
L3 - is for the horn, R3 - RA menu
D-pad up and down for scrolling throught the RA menu, left and right to adjust the values in the RA menu.
Circle is handbrake, Triangle is reverse, X is my alternative accelerator (for when the girlfriend fancies a go) and square is alternative brake (same reason as alternative accel)
L1 is look back, R1 flash lights, L2 down gear, R2 up gear

Its the only way to go, proven against mates who drive auto many many times in identical unmodified cars, and basically kicked them to the curb more times than I can remember :)

When I play GT5 I use manual shifting. It's more fun and immersive :) I used to use automatic but manual is better for doing crazy stuff, because when I go to GT5 I tend to fully tune some crap cars and blasting aroung my favourite tracks and drag racing and spinning and that :P I actually don't care MUCH about laptimes and I donno if it's faster. Theorically I'm sure, but in the practise is now rare the time I'm hotlapping.

Always manual in every racing game. Automatic it's...boring, you have way more fun on manual

i shift with L2 -R2, and i use the classical X - square

Manual for sure.

Steer with Left Analog, Throttle/Brake with Right Analog, Downshift with L1, Upshift with R1.

Other mapped control:
L2 = Look Back
R2 = Reverse Gear
Square = Horn
Triangle = Flash headlamps
Circle = E-Brake
X = Wipers

L3 = Adjustments
R3 = Brights on/off

D-Pad = Adjustment menu navigation

I only drive automatic with the DS3 but I will the shifter when I get my G27.

I'm like nismo33, X and square with steering done on the d-pad.

Every iteration i tell myself i'll use a manual but never do.

Old habits i guess...
