Manual, if you want ultimate control. You learn tracks better aswell, understanding typical gears to be in for turns, and memorizing that.

Here's my button lay out and it works wonders, I recommend.

L2-Break R2-Gas
(Individual control at all times.)(closest to modulation control/but still way from it, oh do I miss my wheel. :()

UP on RIGHT Analog Stick- Upshift
DOWN on RIGHT Analog Stick-Downshift
(almost like a sequential.)

Try it out, but beware you might not return to auto :P

I use manual shifting. I use the triggers for gas and brake so I can work the throttle, X for up-shift and square for down-shift.

Stickshift for my DS3 as described above, RS Forward= upshift, RS Backward= downshift. L2 for brake, R2 for gas.

R1 toggle beams
X Flash beams
L3 RA menu
D-pad RA menu controls
Sq. Horn
R3 reverse
O E-brake

also use a DF Wireless which can be mapped with DF EX and use manual

edit: I have both mapped for the Wangan, but no horn on the DFW. I activate the PS3 with the DS3 then insert Logitech USB receptor stick to PS3 and use it that way.

I used Automatic through out GT3 and GT4 (GT1 and GT2 I used Manual), if your wondering I used automatic in those games due to the physics being to much for me. I also used automatic through a few weeks into GT5 then switched to manual. 👍 I use L2 and R2 to up-shift and down-shift.

Always used manual since I found it in GT2 (i was only 6 so I didn't know)
R2 and L2 is what I use, analogue sticks for accelerate, break, turn.

I'm a AT/MT user, it depends on which track I will be racing/testing (Can't play with manual in the Nordschleife lol)

I've always used a controller and always used manual too since the first GT, regardless of which car (even though I do wish GT featured real automatics with functioning kickdown, etc. on cars only available as auto but that's another topic) which just seemed logical and natural, didn't even consider practising in auto first, mainly because I just like to shift (both in real life and in videogames).

My button layout hasn't changed much (or at all) since the PS-One, I still use the directional buttons for steering (beyond old school I know), X for throttle, square for brakes, circle for handbrake and triangle for reverse.
L2 and R2 are for gearchanges, L1 I've assigned for lights, R1 for looking behind, L3 is the horn, R3 for the wipers and the left analog stick I use to look left and right.
This works perfectly fine for me.

I always use Manual. But at earlier GT titles I always used Automatic, as I thought it was too hard to use Manual :p (I was young, so that's understandable ). I mapped my shifters to the right analog sticks (up = upshift, down = downshift). L2 is throttle and R2 is brake as a bonus addition :dopey:

It's similar in IL2 (reference for trk!!), whilst I have a stick I only ever use it in sim dogfights, the rest of the time I use a DS3.

I never play with my flight stick.:grumpy:

I use the X button for upshifting, the Square button for downshifting. Throttle/brakes with R2 and L2 respectively.
Steering: left analog stick, Reverse: Right analog stick Back direction
Handbrake: R1, Horn: Circle, Flash light: Triangle

I may try this setup, it seems interesting.👍

Manual since GT2 which was my first GT game. Left stick for steering and right stick for accelerate/brake, L2 R2 for gears. I did swap the sticks for a while just to keep things fresh but then I went back.

I've always played the same way since Gran Turismo first came out. The typical X-accelerate square-brake R L upshift and downshift. I've literally never used automatic or any driving aids besides 1 on ABS. I feel like using automatic trans takes A LOT from the game and it's just not as interesting to me. Same goes in real life.

Automatic because my DS3 is literally broken after years of COD, killzone and Soul Calibur, the L2, L1 and the left Stick are done, I need a new DS3 but with all those games coming... I can deal with it :)

Manual all the way. First used it with GT2 and never looked back. I prefer R2 for accel; L2 for brake. Upshift with triangle and downshift with X.

G25 users
manual, paddle, sequential, depends on what the real car use
not using ds3 unless 2 player battle

Im a g27 manual user (now)

Before, i use ds3 manual. Auto on very fast cars. My ds3 manual setup:

L1 = Shift Up, L2 = Shift Down, R2 = Accel. Square = Brake, Circle = E-brake.

Shift, with the square and circle buttons. It'd be weird if I didn't, my right thumb would have nothing to do.

My right thumb is actually quite busy between heavy braking,e-brake, accelerating...etc. I give you credit for using square and circle for shifting. I'd never be able to pull that off.

analog

I don't know how you do it. Dpad for steering and X for gas, I can't even imagine. Once I changed the gas and brakes to L2 R2 I never looked back lol.

Manual

L2 Brake
R2 Accelerate
Right Analog Up Upshift
Right Analog Down Downshift

I usually use a G25, but that doesn't really work when you've got friends around, but manual all the way on a pad. I use R2 accelerate and L2 with break, then O shift up and X down (Forza anyone? lol). Does anyone know of a way to make the triggers more sensitive towards the top end? When I'm driving I find that there's very little difference in motion between being just over idle and flooring it, making high power/low weight cars interesting.

Not a fan of change then? I couldn't imagine still driving in games like that.

I'm like nismo33, X and square with steering done on the d-pad.

Every iteration i tell myself i'll use a manual but never do.

Old habits i guess...

I used to be the same way I couldn't drive GT with the analogs it was the D-pad, X and Square all the way. I think it had something to do with my thumbs being so high off of the controller. I don't know.

I remember when the ps2 came out and the buttons were analog instead of digital and that made the X and Square buttons even better for me (feathering the throttle)but when I started playing Prologue before I got a DFGT I was shifting with L1 and R1 and started steering with the left analog.

I do have to admit there are a couple of setups on here that look enticing. Thanks for sharing.👍

For the life of me I can not drive with the D-pad anymore.

Ditto!

Actually it's just something I've gotten used to I guess, it's often said here that due to the travel movement provided by the L2 and R2 shifters it's easier to control the amount of throttle but since the X-button (and other buttons too ofcourse) is pressure sensitive I'm also perfectly able to control it, it's just a different method perhaps requiring a more subtle touch.
I guess you can compare it with those old Citroëns which also had a pressure sensitive floor mounted brake button instead of a conventional brake pedal, once you get used to that it feels natural.
Same goes for steering with the D-pad, once you master it you can be very smooth although it's no doubt a dying skill since not many use it anymore it seems.
