...but then again I use a steering wheel so it's a lot easier.

If I was using the Dualshock I would definitely be using the auto.

I find it easier cornering and under braking with the manual.

I used manual for a few license tests, but I use Auto for the game. Maybe if there was a really good wheel system with a clutch...

u can drive faster, and get better cornering control with manuals + its suddenly more fun (even more realistic)

try it guys...give it a chance..it will expand your gamplay experience....

M A N U A L...just do it!

I find that keeping my line occupies enough of my time that I dont want to have to try shifting too.

I tested this thouroughly, and there was NO SIGNIFICANT STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE in 1/4 mile trials. So if manual has an advantage, its in accellerating through turns, which I can do by taking the turn a hair wider.

I only use manual on the test and stuff where time is involved. But just Racing i use auto.:D

Manual is superior for these reasons.

1. The rate at which the automatic downshifts may be insufficient.

2. If you brake too late for a turn and the car does downshift in time, it means you are getting assistance you may not want.

3. In turns like the one before the chicane in Midfield, last turn at Laguna and the Corkscrew you can upshift a gear and reduce the torque of your car. In the last turn mentioned, a quick upshift just after exiting can be enough to reduce the odds of spinning.

Actually that's a good point. I must admit I use 2nd for braking into the corkscrew, and 3rd to exit to stop the rear end (on rear drive cars) sliding down the camber.

I also never shift into 1st (unless there's been unpleasantness), for pretty much the same reason. Can't do that with the auto.

hmmm.... last time this came up this thread became fairly heated...

Even some members put what kinda transmission they use in their signatures!!

I will say it though... be real guys... use manual, its where its at!! :D

For 1 player stuff go manual, u'll see that you can get the revs up higher in the gears before u change up than in auto, making stuff go faster. Also, greater control and realism.
For 2 player stuff I go auto unless my car is significantly louder than my opponents, 2 engines just confuses stuff and its not worth it.
BUT IN 1 PLAYER< GO MANUAL

Auto every time. I use a Dual Shock and so having to manage the shifts as well would be a nightmare...
I dare say I'd be willing to give MT a go if I was using a wheel though!

I used to use auto for everything... until one night I gave manual a try, and have not used auto since...

You will adjust after just a few races...

I find that not only does it help in traction, you start to remember what gear to be in for every corner, and you can adjust your speed accordingly (brake-timing suddenly becomes 2nd nature)...

Everyone should use manual...

Most definately manual tranny. I drive a bike now, but when I had my 300ZX, it was manual all the way. In real life, I can't drive an automatic, so why should I in the game? I get more control over what I want my car to do, and I can choose my rpm range whether I want to maximize torque instead of horsepower. (Can't do that with auto)

manual for me.
i got the thrustmaster wheel with the stick shifter on the right which makes chaging heaps of fun, especially down changing fast for corners. :)

i'm also manual when using the dual shock2 controller. L1, L2 for shifting. left analog stick for steering and the right for accel/braking.

I use manual... Hell, I've used manual since GT1. I find that it gives me better control of the car. I brake better and take corners better with manual. Not to mention its easier for me to show off some skills when my brothers and I have donut and spin-out competitions :D

I also use Dual-shock, but not the black sony one. I picked up the MadCatz dualshock2. Its better on accel and brakes, buttons aren't so sensitive.
