Season 5 Quali Report: Bahrain

Bad: Graham: Didn't do anything wrong, yet had a pretty bad race. Started on ridiculously worn tires?

:ouch:

You know what went wrong better than I did.

Here's to another uneventful season. Sorry, Toyota.

Yoshi, that was an awesome report, keep it up. 👍

EDIT: Just a little side project, a Red Bull V8 Team:

EDIT 2: And here's the Sepang Bulletin:

Indeed he does.

:D

Don't worry, I'll manage to blow it, just like my BTCC game. Get this: I've earned six poles out of eleven. My finishes from the pole are R, 1, R, 8, 7, 8.

Sepang Season 5 Quali Report: Whitcomb by a whit

Duncan Hutchinson in the BMW Sauber had turned in 3 slam-bang runs, had pole by a mile and was busy sipping a cool one in the garage before some competitors had turned a lap.

But it was Will Whitcomb who turned a lap of 1:32.994 and stole pole by a margin not appreciable by most human beings, barely one-thousandth of a second.

Meanwhile, Lee Davidson, winner of race 1, took a nice long lap in the paddock, overslept through quali and still managed to turn a lap late in the session good enough for third. Such is the power of the Ferrari.

Herman Chang of McLaren turned a brilliant lap at the start of quali, and was set for better things when he retired to the garage with "some sort of problem." In McLaren, that means engine failure. But then again, so does everything else.

Beyens and Dubois slotted up into row 3 - these two are top drivers and very competitive and it will be interesting to see how they do this season.

Horton of Honda will start from P7 with a clear-cut qualifying run. 7th is nothing to sniff at, and his 2 points from his last P7 outing will attest to that, but surely Honda is dreaming of better finishes.

Super Aguri pulled off one of the best synchronized dancing performances in recent Formula 1 history, with the two teammates going out at the track on the same time for all 3 laps. It was Shepherd who beat Weiland by a small margin, but they will start "together" in P8 and P9.

And that, essentially, is the field for tommorow's race.

Sure, Yuuji Kawasie, starting next to Weiland's Aguri can claim that he will do better things in the race but when you're 8-tenths of a second back of the next qualifier and 1.7 behind the pole you simply do not have the race pace. The only hope for him is either a good pit strategy or the twatting into each other of the Ferraris and the Aguris.

And yet it gets slower with Butler in the Red Bull and Luke Mason in the Toyota starting 11th and 12th. Both have had bad starts to the year and they need a good finish here to kick-start their team's game.

By the time we reach back to row 7 we are fully over 2 seconds clear of Whitcomb, and that's not quite what rookie Syme in the second Red Bull was hoping for. Charkaoui starts on the outside of row 7 in Honda's #2. The only logical reason of him being behind Horton by this margin is the relative unaerodynamicness of spelling his name. Or unaerodynamicness.

Jarrett Allman in the second Ferrari is 15th and 3 seconds clear of his teammate, for crying out loud.

Tristan Lovett is 4 seconds off the pace in 16th.

Row 9 has Tristan LeSabre, the mystery Midland man, inside and George Morley, that guy who's name I keep hearing, on the outside.

Danny Graham simply had no good qualifying runs at all and so he can at least pretend he has a shot in the race tommorow - but with his teammate still 2 seconds off the pace, Toyota's chances are looking grim.

Finally in dead last we find Bruno Domingues, whose Renault simply would not start, and so his quali runs were aborted. Such a mechanical failure is rare and it can be hypothesized that Renault is using up all its bad karma before the race.

Theoretically this should be a 10-car race, but who knows, the front-runners might wreck, someone might cast a storm spell upon the racetrack, and Midland might fill its cars up with enough fuel to last through Suzuka. Then we might see some interesting racing after all.

Official Ferrari Statement - Lee Davidson

"I'm happy with third, maybe a front row start would have been better but the track is incredibly wide so I'm sure I'll find some space somewhere to jump Hutchison and Will. The car felt good today and I can only hope of more of the same tomorrow."

So yeah, I like the Ferrari, you like the Ferrari? No? Pity on you then..

Jarrett Allman in the second Ferrari is 15th and 3 seconds clear of his teammate, for crying out loud.

I was dependent on my motherly teammate to start the setup so I could perfect it. :D

Needless to say, I was late to the gun on perfecting the stup.

Duncan Hutchinson in the BMW Sauber...

Hutchinson is in the McLaren, right?
Other than that it was a top report :)

FIA QUALIFYING PRESS CONFERENCE: MAYALISA '06 - SUPER Aguri

Reporter: Jamez, both cars qualifying strongly again, disappointing to not be further up the grid as you were in Bahrain, how do you feel this will affect your race?

JS: I honestly don't think it will be that bad, we want to concentrate on getting both cars in the points this weekend, hopefully if we can stay out of trouble our strategy should be strong enough to get us there.

Reporter: In qualifying we saw both cars making their respective runs synchronised on the track, was this just pure luck or was there reasoning behind this?

JS: We knew from our practice data that our straight line speed would let us down, we took a chance on running the cars togother to use each other as a catapult down the long straights, and I feel that it worked to our advantage.

Reporter: You mentioned that both cars were suffering straight line speed in Practice and Qualifying, how do you feel this is going to affect your race performance?

JS: Not at all, Jessica and I have both worked hard in the Warm Up session to resolve this problem and we feel that our current setup works well. We have a strong strategy and should expect to see both cars in the points tomorrow if all goes well.

Live Interview With Ferrari Drivers Lee Davidson and Jarrett Allman

Welcome to our exclusive interview with Ferrari drivers Lee Davidson and Jarrett Allman! We have a VERY lucky audience tonight!.

SpeedTV: So guys, how's it going?

Lee Davidson: Great!
Jarrett Allman: Ditto.
--

STV: So, how is the season for you guys so far?

LD: Amazing. I feel very confident this season.
JA: With a teammate like Lee, how could it be bad?
--

STV: So Lee, we hear you're pretty much a role model for your rookie teammate, is this true?

LD: I wouldn't say that. I do believe I will probably help him substantially this season though.
JA: It's true. He's gonna be the reason I do any good this season .
--

STV: Jarrett, how do you feel about being in a Ferrari?

JA: Doesn't feel much different really. I do like knowing I'm in a sure-to-do-good car though. Much more assuring than my last 2 teams.
--

STV: And Lee, your comments?

LD: I have pretty much the same feelings as Jarrett does. It's nothing amazingly over the top, but I like knowing I am guaranteed to win at least one race....oh wait. ;)
--

STV: Now for some user emails!

Amanda from Brooklyn, New York writes: "Either of you guys single?"

LD: 555-5387 *James Bond style wink-and-finger-gun move*
JA: *laughs at Lee*
--

STV: Joe from Adelaide, Australia writes: "Who is the good guy and who is the bad guy out of your team?"

LD: Umm. Jarrett?
JA: *gets caught staring at Lee* Oh...right...erm...next question?
LD: :odd:
--

STV: That's all the time we have for today! Thanks for coming guys!

LD: No problem!
JA: Any time man *flashes a smile and a wink...girls faint in the audience*

So...how about THAT for a report?

Great qualifying report, you really pay attention to the details. However, I believe the name is Steven LeSabre.

Amanda from Brooklyn, New York writes: "Either of you guys single?"

LD: 555-5387 *James Bond style wink-and-finger-gun move*
JA: *laughs at Lee*

*Hides from Laura* Nice report though, you practially made it sound like me without being me!

Lol, for once I got a laugh out of one of MachOne's posts, good work ;)

Only thing that dissapoints me is the lack of passion you guys have racing for the greatest F1 team in all history, Red Bull's atmosphere would suit that attitude far better ;)

As for us "slow" people at Aguri, "We must defend our honour!".

Monday Quotes - Mclaren:

Reporter: How do you feel about this season? With a new teammate and a great start at Bahrain?

HC: It has been great, Dunc really is an excellent teammate. From his many years of experience at Renault, I'm sure we can collaborate and win some races this season. As for my #3 finish at Bahrain, I was definately surprised. Since I never had any success at the opening race, maybe it is time for a change.

Reporter: How do you feel about the cars?

HC: Well, so far it is pretty good, (knock on wood) but qualifying has give us some problems, just hope that the car can keep its own on race day.

Reporter: Which team(s) do you see as a threat to you guys?

HC: Of course the usuals, Ferrari and Renault. Nevertheless, the Super Aguris has shown their strengths and they both could be competitave. Last years champion Dubois in the Williams will always be there, not to mention season three's champ in the Midland.

Reporter: Mr. Chang, do you think you'll have a chance at the top 3?

HC: As long as my car doesn't break down, Mclarens definately has a chance.

Reporter: Thank you for you time.

HC: Thanks, and have a good day.

Renault Statement: "Don't count us out."

Renault boss Flavio Briatore, has warned teams not to get on their high horses just yet. At an interview after qualifying he had this to say:

FB: "Rather than bask in what results they might have got, the teams need to be 100% focussed on the whole season rather than singular races. Sure, its great when you win a race or get a good amount of points, but this is a season series, not a 1 race series. Anything can happen, just don't count us out"

Renault who are currently joint 1st in the constructors title race with Ferrari, and who's drivers are 2nd and 4th in the drivers title, have seen that anything can happen, when Domingues crashed out of qualifying after a rear left tyre failure. We caught a few words with the 1st driver of Renault, Jef Beyens.

JB: "Right now things are going ok for the team. We've just had the first race of the season and both cars finished in the points, so that is a good thing for us. Sepang we'll need to keep up the hard work, and make sure we can get Bruno into the points somehow.
As for the other teams, Ferrari is one of the teams I'm watching. I had several wonderful years at Ferrari culminating in the constructers title and drivers title for my team mate, Haswell, so I know all about what the Ferrari car can do. Super Aguri, for all their hype, I'm not worried about them its all just a flash in the pan."

Join us later today when we host the Sepang Grand Prix.

Only thing that dissapoints me is the lack of passion you guys have racing for the greatest F1 team in all history, Red Bull's atmosphere would suit that attitude far better ;)

Well I guess this is a new, modern Ferrari, I don't think they have ever had two young drivers in their driver line up at the same time..

Damnit Horton! :grumpy:

Good job for Ashley and Danny.

Where were the Renaults and Ferraris eh? :D

Ye-haw!

Toyota are slowly but surely beginning to rock!

*points*

HAY GUYZ. LUK HOOZ IN DA MANUFACTURERZ LEED!

FEARAI.

Teehee. Leading Renault by 3 points.

Oh and Ashley..I hate you for stealing my fastest lap :(.

So, what's the current season standings?

And where's the season 4 report!? (just because Williams won it :p)

lol, dunno about season 4

but I'm leading in the Mclaren - 12 pts two 3rd place
Lee second in the Ferrari - 11 pts win and 8th
Ashley third in the red bull - 10 pts R and win

Come on, Sepang race report :)

Hey everyone reading this thread, I just joined an F1 2002 game if anyone wants to kick my arse (since, y'know, my team's full).

Race report will come today when I'm done with this funny thing called homework.

Sepang, Season 5: Served by the Butler

It was an unusually hot weekend in Sepang. Most pedestrians would agree that it was a rather dry one too. However, it was proverbially rather wet on the race track where Honda got whitewashed, where many front contenders got their parade rained upon and where Ashley Butler stormed to the front to take a win in this rather witty race.

As the lights went out in Sepang, the drivers stomped on the gas and roared forward - except for Beyens, who happened to have downshifted into reverse and went backwards into the Midland of LeSabre. The Renault never quite seemed the same after, perhaps out of embarrasment.

Meanwhile his teammate Domingues turned up the afterburners and jumped seven spots into 13th. The other big winner was Syme who gained 4 spots, up to 9th. Hutchinson dropped 2 spots to 2nd.

The 2nd big loser was Kawasie in the other Midland wrecking ball, clunking into the Toyota of Mason. Kawasie promptly tested the plausibility of a Midland 4x4, going into the grass, while Mason's front wing got jammed, forcing him to pit for a new nose.

By then everyone had got around to lap 2, in which the major development was Dubois's shuffle up the field to 3rd, up 2 spots from 5th.

Butler first picked up the lead on lap 9, roaring past Whitcomb to the tune of 1.7 seconds. Mission accomplished, he dived into the pits rather early the next lap.

First race winner Davidson in the Ferrari inherited the lead until an oil scare caused the car to choke over itself and cost him valuable time equating to a whopping 11 positions. Unfortunately someone was bright enough to try to broadcast the team radio during this time and now all the youngsters know a couple new words.

Things were looking all happy and butterflies for Honda, with Horton up in 6th on lap 15. And then Horton acidentally pressed the Sato-setting button and was forced to drive into Hutchinson at 200 miles an hour. A couple barrel rolls and spins later both drivers were out of their cars and on the ground fighting.

Meanwhile Honda was notified that it's 2nd driver Charkaoui had retired from 17th after falling asleep of boredom and driving head on into a wall.

And so the Safety Car came out. Cars aplenty dived into the pits, including both Red Bulls at the same time - Butler was forced to queue.

When the green came back out on lap 20 Whitcomb was leading Chang and Davidson to the flag. Behind them were Weiland, Domingues, Allman, Dubois, and Syme.

Lap 24 saw LeSabre in the Midland make a mistake and damage his car, forcing him to pit next lap. This had the disastrous effect of dropping him from 14th to 16th.

One lap later Davidson did something wrong and created an error deep, deep in the inside of his car where he'll never fix it. Or maybe the Ferrari mechanics were lazy/inept/sold to some Shoemaker guy.

Lap 28 saw Syme in the Red Bull momentarily mistake the brake for the gas, losing him 2 positions, while Lovett made a driver error in some irrelevant position, forcing him to make an irrelevant pitstop.

On lap 30 2nd-placed Dubois had an issue with the electronics in his car going haywire and so for a lap his data display showed rather distracting pictures rather than his gear selection. This had a negative effect on his lap time.

3 laps later the Midland crew was bored of standing around doing nothing so they called in LeSabre to practice their pitstops, since their cars were out of the points.

Butler made a driver error on lap 36 and promptly did a perfect 360 spin, which lost him some time. Things weren't looking really bright for the Red Bull at this point, but this race wasn't over yet.

By the time everyone had pitted and cycled through he was about 8 seconds adrift of the lead with 13 to go.

And then, as usual, things went wrong. Dubois had an odd moment when his car decided it was on a fuel diet, slowing to a crawl for a moment and costing him 2nd place and valuable time.

Domingues was still in the lead by 6 seconds, though. Things were going brilliantly. After placing last in qualifying he was now leading the race with 11 laps to go. How could you ask for more?

And then his clutch bit it. Or maybe it was a loose lug nut.

But the fact was that Domingues was leading and doing 200 one second, and doing approximately 3 miles an hour back to the garage (on foot) the next. That's the way racing goes.

Wait, there's more! Allman in the Ferrari was closing in on Butler, and had a mere 2.4 seconds to make up.

Then he spun off track and dropped to 9th. By now one has gotten the sense that this, plain and simple, is Butler's race to lose.

And he didn't. Plain and simple he won the race because he avoided screwing up (in) the clutch. Sure it doesn't sound pretty, but ten points is ten points and no one is going to complain about that.

Graham in the Toyota was 11 seconds back but wasn't complaining, having beaten his point total from last season.

Chang had pulled off another podium and with his 6 points now doubled he is leading the driver's championship.

Dubois finished 4th (claiming he could do better), Whitcomb 5th, Syme 6th. Beyens would've made 7th but the cursed reverse gear returned and he was forced to pit to repair damage. And so the Ferraris were 7th and 8th, Allman ahead of Davidson.

Chang may be leading the championship but there are 14 drivers within 10 points...and all drivers are within 12 points of the leader (well, duh). Melbourne is known for shaking things up; either that, or I'm known for making up false statements.

We'll see in a few days.

---

Good races:
Butler - Well, he won. In a Red Bull, yup.
Chang - Podium + podium = lead
Graham - Solid race, good finish
Syme - Maiden points

Bad races:
Domingues - Last on the grid, led the race, clutch broke, 17th
Beyens - Bad start, got dropped from points near end
Dubois - Good finish but could've had shot at 10 points

Ugly races:
Honda - 2 unrelated DNFs on the same lap
Midland - rather hot in those raincoats
Weiland - got beaten by a guy

Good race report, damn, I had an extremly dull race. Started 8th, finished 9th, just stayed out of trouble, but not quick enough.

Meh, I'm planning to make up for it in Melbourne.

ATTENTION

Guillaume Dubois: Gooseter (Tristan Lovett) your team mate wishes to contact you via email/msn, he has an issue with moving out and would like you to keep his season active by taking over, Please contact him at gooseter@tpg.com.au to sort out this matter.

Thanks :)
