Hungarian GP - Race Report

Laps: 70 (9 Spent Under Saftey Car)
Pole: Bram Machiels (Toyota)
Fastest Lap: Bruno Domingues (Renault), 1:08.658 (Lap 33)

Spoilers!

Today saw the Grand Prix of Hungary take place infront of a close to sell-out crowd. It saw some close racing and some dramatic collisions, Bram Machiels started on pole with Jamez Shepherd sharing the front row, Davidson was 4th just behind Herman Chang in the first of the Renaults. Championship leader Jef Beyens started a distant 9th.

As the lights went out Bram Michiels and Lee Davidson both got swallowed up by the pack, it was later explained their tyres were not up to correct temperatures. However the disaster wouldn't end there for Machiels, as whilst trying to defend 12th into turn 1, the Belgian collided with Luke Mason's BMW Sauber, causing the Toyota to fly into the barrier, luckily Bram was fine but the car was a complete write off. Also on that lap, just behind leader Shepherd, Pete Reynolds tried a desperate move down the inside into the final bend. His Toro Rosso made contact with the Renault of Herman Chang resulting in a puncture for the American, Reynolds meanwhile knocked a brake pad off and would never find the same pace again. Lap 6 saw retirement number 2 as Blake Haswell found the door shut on him by Danny Graham as he dived up the inside, there was some chassis damage delivered to the Toyota but in comparisment to Haswell's 3-wheeled McLaren, he got off luckily. This was the second time in as many races that Haswell's race has ended early due to a collision with a Toyota, so it was no suprise to see him storm over to the Japanese team's Pit Box to deliver a few 'choice' words.

Graham's damage was getting worse throughout the lap and he was quickly caught up by Will Whitcomb, by the time they got to Turn 1 on Lap 7, Will was in a position to take the Brit. However in a copy-cat move, Graham once again closed the door on his competitor, resulting in a retirement for the BMW Sauber. Graham once again managed to drive off but this time a wheel bearing was out of whack and his car was all over the place. The Safety Car followed for 4 laps before the race restarted on Lap 12, Shephard and Reynolds held position with Jef Beyens overtaking the ill Toyota of Graham, Brad Horton appeared to let both Brett Edwards and Davidson through via team orders, Domingues rounded out the top 8. On Lap 14 Reynolds span his Toro Rosso at the fast Turn 4 loosing 4 positions, luckily he was able to continue, Laps 16 and 17 saw Davidson jump up 2 positions at the cost of Edwards and Beyens and in the process setting the fastest lap so far, however he would have to wait for the scalp of Shepherd as the Brit pitted on lap 19, confirming he was indeed light fueled.

The next lap saw yet another collision as Davidson, on cold tyres, misjudged the hairpin, touching wheels with Jessica Weiland, causing the Aussie to drop 5 places in her Red bull, Davidson went on to take 8th by the end of the lap. Leader Shepherd finally made his first stop on Lap 26, showing how great an effort was 2nd in qualifying, he certainly looked favourite for the win at this stage, this gave the lead to Bruno Domingues who was currently having a very quiet race by his standards. Jef Beyens confirmed he was running a 1 stopper after pitting on Lap 33 from second place, dropping to 3rd. Only Domingues was yet to pit out of the front runners, things were looking great for the Portugese driver as he came out of the pits still in 1st on Lap 35 and started to pull away from the Williams of Shepherd before disaster struck on Lap 43. Bruno misjudged Turn 4 and pummeled into the barrier, a heavy impact drawing concerned faces in the Renault garage, however he managed to climb out by himself and was taken to the Infield Hospital for checks. This gifted the lead straight back to Shepherd, however with the safety car out again he would have to defend from a requrgent Jef Beyens.

That would have been the case however if it wasn't for a firey exit for the Ferrari Driver on the very next lap as a oil leak caused a fire in his engine bay, the Englishman didn't seem too bothered, after all, he did have a 20 point lead before the race. As the safety car went in on lap 50, Shepherd led Reynolds in the Toro Rosso with Davidson recovering to 3rd, Brett Edwards was running well in the Super Aguri in 4th ahead of the sole McLaren of Duncan Hutchison. 6th saw Brad Horton with Mason and Jarrett Allman rounding out the points positions. Reynolds however relinquished 2nd on lap 53 as he didn't recieve enough fuel from the pump at the last stop, the gave Davidson second however it would be two Hondas in the top 3 as Horton drove a fantastic lap to climb to 3rd, taking both Edwards and Hutchison. The next lap featured a collision between Dubois and Chang, both were fighting over 9th as they entered the final turn, Chang forced Dubois wide onto the grass and saw the Canadian Season 4 Champ loose 4 places in the process. Come Lap 58, Davidson had closed the gap to leader, Jamez Shepherd to less than a second, the Honda looked perfectly set up for the track as Davidson readied an assult into turn 1, Jamez had it covered however and the Honda driver had to pull out of the move. Lap 59 saw yet another collision involving Herman Chang as he attempted to take the Super Aguri of Narayan, causing him to spin and loose his front wing, Chang however, appeared to get away without a scratch!

On the 60th lap, Shepherd again closed the door on Davidson as the two duked it out for the win, 7 laps later and Davidson finally chucked his Honda up the inside, resisting Shepherd's efforts, the Brit took the lead for the first time in the race as the Honda mechanics jumped up with joy. However Shepherd kept a ace up his sleeve, it was revealed he ran lower revs untill that moment and he infact had some extra power, this payed divident as he slipstreamed Davidson down the main straight the very next lap, Davidson was helpless. The Honda driver had one last attempt on Lap 69 but came too close to a collision, he had to settle for second as Shepherd won a superb race, Brad Horton finished off a great day for Honda taking the final step of the podium, 5 seconds behind Shepherd. Jarrett Allman saved Ferrari the blushes with a credible 4th place, with Edwards back in the points in 5th and Duncan Hutchison 6th. Luke Mason survived a couple of collisions to take 7th with Kawasie completing a quiet race in 8th for Spyker-Midland. Shepherd was ecstatic as he jumped out of his Williams, they were the best team on the day and the win was fully deserved, Davidson was the first to congratulate him before checking his car with team mate Horton. As the Australian National Anthem rang out on the podium, word has it this may be Shepherd's last season in F1 before moving to NASCAR, either way, in the present time, the kid is on fire.

Very nice report Bee!
Lots of crashes and drivers errors, but it was a nice race.
Fast lap at lap 33 from 70,not bad.if i havent crashed,i think i would have run away whit the first place!

Still waiting for an offer to form a team for next season.

Side note, Williams now in striking distance to go and clinch the constructor's championship. Watch out.

Not originally, but he posted his video, then said he made a 1-digit mistake on his submission time, that makes a replay required under WRS rules.

But he posted one that showed two obviously different replays. (Watch the 1'14 mark, slow-mo'd by Cyril) here.

He was requested to post another video, but his camera conveniently has a 1'11 maximum video length. Therefore missing the end of the lap showing his time.

It's not the first time he has tried to cheat either.

CCYoshi's Momentum-o-Meter: Hungaroring

Looking Up:

Shepherd: The hottest man in F1, hands down. 3 wins in 4 races, and 2 in a row. Who would have thought 4 races ago (when he had a paltry 17 points) that he'd be in 2nd contending for the championship?

Honda: Extremely strong double-podium finish allows them to claw the Constructors' lead away from Ferrari. But 3 other teams are within 8 points - keep an eye on this great battle!

Allman: Finally getting things into high gear - has finished or competed well in the last 3 races - with a podium and a 4th place.

---

On the Edge:

Midland: If there's one thing this team is missing, it's consistency. Went from a double-digit point score to a lone point at Hungary.

Chang: Had an impressive drive almost into the points (9th place) after playing pinball the whole race. Had great speed for someone driving practically with 3 wheels - but still, scored no points.

Beyens: Perhaps a crack in the Ferrari's shining armor as the car fails underneath him to cause his first retirement since Monaco...championship lead "down" to 15 points.

---

Falling Down:

Machiels: Have I missed some sort of bullseye on the Toyota cars? He's only been able to complete 4 laps in the last 3 races before colliding with another car and retiring. Ouch!

Domingues: Takes possession of the "most retirements" category with 5 this season. Alright, maybe he's not doing horribly bad, but he can't keep squandering point opportunities by crashing out of races...

Mechanics: As Graham put it, Hungary was "fight night 2006" for GTP F1, with 7 collisions, 5 retirements, 9 damaged cars, and a lot of tension building up between drivers. (...Haswell v. Toyota, round 3 coming up next?)

Turkish GP - Qualifying Report

Today saw qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix at the Istanbul circuit. There was alot of unanswered questions after the Hungarian GP but Jamez Shepherd certainly confirmed he has the pace to take Jef Beyens to Brazil, will the Ferarri Man take back what many people thought was his? Or will Shepherd continue his path of domination, that would be found out tomorrow, first was qualifying!

Session 1

The first session took place as the crowd still piled in to fill the stands, traffic was horrendous outside the track, but that was the least of the driver's worries as they fired up their engines. Honda's Brad Horton carried on his strong performance in Hungary with the fastest time of the first session on a 1:23.677, second was Blake Haswell, managing to suvive without a Toyota bumping into him. 3rd was the second Honda, Lee Davidson, showing the team had real pace this weekend, Bruno Domingues followed the Brit in 4th with Renault Team Mate Herman Chang a strong 5th. Will Whitcomb never left the pits as the team found a electrical problem within his car after the morning's testing, this ment the American would take no part and start at the back of the grid for tomorrow's race. Joining Will out of the session was Cesar Vanwall for Toro Rosso in 21st, Jarrett Allman, again performing poorly for Ferrari in 20th, the two Red Bulls of Weiland (19th) and Schwarz (18th) and lastly Danny Graham suprisingly finding himself out after a very poor run by his standards.

Session 2

Session 2 took place as clouds started to gather over the track, this didn't stop Honda however as Brad Horton again set the fastest time with Davidson just behind him. Jef Beyens took 3rd underlining his pace with in-form Jamez Shepherd (4th) leading team mate Guillaume Dubois in fifth. Bram Machiels suffered a spectacular spin at Turn 8 but managed to later record a good enough time for the shootout, Blake Haswell was also lucky as he ran off the track at Turn 1. Again he also managed to set a faster time later in the session. Loosing out in Session 2 were Steve LeSabre (16th) who couldn't find any pace in his Toro Rosso, Luke Mason (15th) who struggled with tyre wear, Narayan (14th) in the Super Aguri only managed to set one lap in the session before suffering a engine failure down the back straight with team mate Brett Edwards just ahead in 13th. The two Midlands couldn't match their qualifying effort in Hungary as they crashed out of the session, Kawasie just pipping Reynolds by 1 tenth.

Session 3

Session 3 was expected to be a Honda whitewash of the front row with both drivers looking pacey, it was much closer between the rest of the teams which consisted of 2 McLarens, 2 Williams, 2 Renaults, 1 Ferrari and a sole Toyota. Jef Beyens looked conservative as he finished 10th place, possibly heavy fueled again like Hungary, he shares Row 5 with fellow Brit, Duncan Hutchison, enjoying some fortune at long last. Row 4 sees all Blue and Yellow as the Renault team took both places, Chang (8th) looked to have alot more fuel in than Domingues with the times showing 3 tenths the margin between them both. Row 3 features Jamez Shepherd, looking quiet today, not taking too many risks, suprisingly joining him is Brad Horton in 5th, the Aussie was top of the 2 previous sessions so maybe he is carrying a fair chunk of fuel..

The top 4 starts with Blake Haswell, rounding off a positive performance for McLaren with both cars neatly in the Top 10, just ahead by less than a tenth is the Williams of Guillaume Dubois, hoping his luck can change around after a tough Hungarian GP. The front row then was between two Japanese teams, Honda and Toyota, Davidson looked fast and Machiels was always known to be a threat in qualifying, Davidson however was unstoppable as he lapped fast lap after fast lap and took pole by almost 3 tenths, Machiels was lucky to be even second when Dubois put in a late stunner to move within 3 thousandths of a second. Davidson's delight was not hidden as he took his first pole of the season, he is certainly looking good for the race!

Race Preview

As you look down the grid, you can see there will be some interesting battles taking place. Honda and Toyota will duke it out at the front of the grid as Dubois and Haswell look to score big points in what has been dissapointing seasons for both. Jamez Shepherd has a fair few cars to get past if he wants any say in a race victory as does Jef Beyens. The two Renaults have been evenly matched throughout the year, each desperate to prove to their future teams they have made the right decision. The constructors championship is also incredibly tight and with 3 of the top 4 teams having both their cars in the top 10, the championship could become even tighter by the end of the race!

Odds:

Davidson: 5/1
Shepherd: 5/1
Horton: 7/1
Beyens: 8/1
Dubois: 10/1
Machiels: 13/1
Domingues: 13/1
Chang: 14/1
Haswell: 16/1
Hutchison: 20/1

Poopy.

Meh, at least both us Midlands are starting together. No idea what that'll mean, I needed something to make this post look longer...

Great reports Yoshi and bee!
Next race will be a "all or nothing" for me, 5 retirements is just too much ! in this race, first, i will try to finish it! second..try some points...and for last..try to win! :D

I've been going "all or nothing" for pretty much 90% of the season now :D

"Well, the car's slow, so the obvious solution is to drive like an insane bat out of rush hour traffic..."

It's been a mixed bag, but not as many DNFs as I would've guessed. I should go back and see how Hanon the Midland guy from S4 drove the car so well...

"Well, the car's slow, so the obvious solution is to drive like an insane bat out of rush hour traffic..."

Don't we mean "bat out of hell"? It is Halloween after all...and it's never an inappropriate time to make a reference to Meat Loaf (or Mr. Loaf, as he is named in the New York Times :sly: )
