Interview with Panasonic Toyota F1 Racing Team

Reporter:
Guys, welcome, I'm glad you could make it for the interview. Let's introduce the ones we're interviewing today: First, we've got Bram Machiels, best point scorer for Toyota this season and teamboss Tsutomu Tomita. Unfortunately, Danny Graham coudn't make it as no one has seen him in the last few days...

-Bram, let us start with you, OK? How was your season?
In my opninion, I had a brilliant season, I really enjoyed drvining with all the chaps over there.

-The very last race is about the start, you're starting 6th. What'll you think you'll make out of it?
I really can't tell, I'm hoping to score a podium in the very last race here, I had a susprising qualify I think, I never could've thought I even could've make it in the top 8 after the wet practice session.

-This season has evolved into a real climax between Beyens, Shepherd and Kawasie, who'll win?
I'm not telling you! Seriously, no one can tell right now. Shepherd and Kawasie are starting 1st & 2nd, so it looks Shepherd will run off with the title but as so many times; You never know what's going to happen.

-Do you have a chance of winning?
Who knows, I did pretty good in the last race, I finshed 2nd, I could've won but the race was just a couple of laps too short.

-What do you expect for the next season?
Huge things, throughout the whole season, the car has been developed with a huge rate, I hope we can keep it like that next season. And especially now with everyone moving to another team, we have to smith the iron while it's hot!

-How is the co-operation between you and Graham?
Very good, although, I can't say much positive about him for this weekend, I had to setup the whole car myself.

-And still a 6th qualify
Exactly!

-What would be your favorit race of the season?
Monaco, definitly. Great result and more important, I showed just how fast we were that weekend as my fastest laptime were untouchable.

-Best driver and team this season?
Hard to say actually, it would become a tie between Willams and Midland. Best driver? I'd say Kawasie, look at his results and the car he's driving, stunning job. I actually hope I may get to work with him some time.

-Well, I wish you the best in your career and good luck!

-Mr. Tomita, welcome, what do you think of your team this season
Well, I'm very positive, we did a great job getting Machiels over here. We definitly were one of the better teams compared to last season.

-You guys actually started the season after Monaco, didn't you? Such awfull results in the first races, except for Imola
Indeed, we had some difficulties in the beginning. But that was just because Machiels was new to all of this, new season, new teammate.

-Though he drove for Toyota in season 2 and did an awfully job...
Yes that's right. I'm not sure what he's been doing in the meantime but he definitly made some progress in the Toyota.

-Can we ever see him on the top?
Time will tell, surely a Ferrari or Renault or even a Honda would fit good in his hands.

-And yet, he doesn't move?
No, he has no reason to move. He only did a season in a long time, he still needs to learn so why not learns those things in a team you're familiar with?

-Hmm, yes indeed. Say, how about Graham?
He's been here for quite some time, we don't ever thought about getting rid of him and we're surely not planning it as well. Graham isn't the most consistent driver, but he's a very good teammate to have and a very important pion in the team.

-Well, I wish you guys all the best of luck and who knows, we might ge too your drivers in the front next year!
Who knows...

What a finish!! Well done Jef for winning the Championship. Well done Sheperd for getting so close and making it a nail biting finish!

I bet you both held your breaths for a few moments there.

Beyens did a stunning job! If I only didn't made such a dumb pitsop twice after each other :grumpy:

Great win Jef, you deserve a title after all of these seasons of runner-updom. ;)

I’m glad to get that silver car out of my way. Worst. Season. Ever.

Yeah, I thought it was the end of my championship after qualify, so I gambled on a two stopper. Extra special since it was all me for most of that season.

Beyens did a stunning job! If I only didn't made such a dumb pitsop twice after each other :grumpy:

Cheers

Great win Jef, you deserve a title after all of these seasons of runner-updom. ;)

Great drive Kawasie to make this interesting until the end. 👍

Thumbs up Renault for the great battle for constructors. 👍

Thumbs up to everyone who raced from start to finish, those are the kind of people we really need. 👍

Jarrett Allman Retires From Formula One

AP- Earlier this week, Formula 1 driver Jarrett Allman of Team Ferrari announced his official retirement from the series.

"It's just become too much of a burden. I can not keep up with the pace of younger, more enthusiastic drivers. I am no longer any good at performing car setups with this newfound technology, which requires me to rely on my team mate for any chance of winning. I feel that I am just dead weight for my team and the series in itself. I've had a great time with all of the drivers. Most notably Lee Davidson and Jef Beyens for their awesome cooperation. I'd like to thank everyone who has raced with me since the beginning of my career. We've all had tough times, we've all witnessed heated arguments, and we've all seen the photo-finishes and close championship battles. I share alot of memories with all of you."

Allman signed off with one of his most famous comments:

"And keep in mind..It doesn't matter whether you win by an inch or a mile. Winning, is winning."

- Jim Mossberg [Editor-In-Chief]

No, no, no, no.

Last time Appie went with me I got shafted. If Appie wants to join Mclaren, I'm going back to Midland.

Don't worry he wont be racing this season it seems.

Davidson: Honda Most Improve Development!

After finishing the final race of the season, Honda race driver Lee Davidson commented on the apparent lack of development within the team,

"We really need to keep pushing throughout next season, this season we had a great car at the beginning but since then we have faded back down the grid. We struggled for points today I think it's safe to say and at this rate, we could be going down the gutter.."

Davidson will continue his contract with Honda into Season 7 where he will be joined by ex-teammate Herman Chang who leaves Renault.

Chang: Next season looking good

"Next season is looking good for Honda, especially reuniting with ex-temmate Davidson. Nevertheless, I agree with Davidson that we need more development. The lack of development really hurts the team and the drivers."

Chang will end his contract with Renault after a somewhat successful year and join Honda.

Machiels looking forward to next season

Machiels is looking forward alot to the new season, Machiels says "If all goes well, I hope to battle with the Hondas, which probably will be one of the better teams".

👍

Beyens: 'Motivation has never been higher'

Ferrari #1 Driver, and current World Champion, Jef Beyens is said to be excited about the up and coming season. Beyens, who is currently doing winter testing with old Renault teammate Duncan Hutchison at Ferrari's Fiorano Circuit was able to give some comments on the upcoming season:

"Yeah, I'm certainly looking forward to the new season, and my motivation has never been higher. I thought this world championship title would never come for me as I would always finish in the runner-up spot. I thought my time at Renault would yeild me a driver's title but alas, it was not to be there either.

Even this past years championship seemed in doubt. Out with an injury towards the end of the season, with a 25 point lead and Ashley Butler as stand-in driver the car suffered two disasterious oil failures, sending my championship lead tumbling to one point ahead of the final race. So I took a pitstop gamble on the last race, and much to my surprised I won from 10th place, just ahead of Shepard.

Now that I have been both a constructors champion in season 2, and now drivers champion my confidence and motivation are huge so watch out for next season!"

I think Pete Reynolds was interested in my old McLaren seat.

Yep. I'll stay as Pete Reynolds for this season (I like chopping and chaniging names).

Congrats Jef on the championship.

Season 6 Final Stage: Interlagos Race Report

This was it.

71 laps and 192 miles separated three pilots from one goal: the driver's championship.

Yuuji Kawasie of Midland was the one with the longest gap to cover and thus was the one wasting no time sprinting out to the lead when the lights went out. Wiiliams driver James Shepherd, also one of the three, dropped a position to third while Chang in the Renault slipped in between. Jef Beyens, the championship leader, hung back in 10th, biding his time.

Somewhere in the back Allman made a dramatic exit in his final race, tangling with Aguri driver Narayan and turning his Ferrari into a bicycle. Certainly not the exit he was hoping for - nor Ferrari, who could use a backup mate. For "blocking".

Lap 3 saw an entertaining but entirely irrelevant as Weiland from the Red Bull A-Team and Vanwall from the B-Team Toro Rosso got together, promptly knocking the Toro Rosso out of the race from a less-than-glorious 16th position.

Meanwhile in the front Kawasie was building a small lead of a few seconds, while Machiels in the Toyota slipped up the field, dumping Shepherd down another spot. The Midland's crew joy was lessened a bit when the Toyota promptly drove right past Kawasie, taking the lead on lap 12.

More sweating ensued, this time in the Williams pit, as Shepherd made a critical error coming out of the last turn and spun, falling 6 spots to 11th place, moving Beyens up to 9th.

Machiels continued to pull away in the lead until he dove into the pits on lap 20. Coincidentally, Chang lost control of his car and planted it firmly in the wall at the same time. Parts were flung halfway across the course and the safety car was brought out. While the Toyota crew cursed their luck, the 3 championship contenders dove into the pits.

They were all in the top 4, the lone non-contender of that being the other Williams of Dubois. Unfortunately, he was ahead of his teammate at the time and so Shepherd lost crucial ground waiting in the queue. Things were not getting any better for Williams.

Kawasie however pulled off a blinding stop and came out in P1, with Davidson, Horton, Dubois, Reynolds, and finally Beyens following, with Shepherd back in 13th.

Still under the safety car, the oil pressure demon struck again as it had done twice to Beyens in 2 races, but this time to Dubois, perhaps as karmic retribution for blocking his teammate (unwittingly) in the pit. And so he was forced to pull into the pits and retire from P4.

It would hurt their constructor championship chances, but more important, if it could happen to Dubois, Shepherd might be in trouble too...

The green came back out and Shepherd began working his way up the field. About 4 laps later Schwarz and Narayan came together behind him and wrecked spectacularly, bringing out yet another Safety Car. All the championship contenders stayed out, however.

Williams thanked their lucky stars again.

On lap 31 (40 to go) the SC went away once again and luckily this time the restart was clean. Beyens began working his way backwards, with Shepherd passing him for P7 - perhaps a sign of how this would end?

However, there was more passing action up in the front, as Midland's shell began to crack. Kawasie lost two places in two laps to the dynamic rivals Haswell and Davidson - he had been leading almost all race...but now his pace was fading.

Then the two men in front of him dove into the pits and it was all better again for Kawasie and his 3-second lead.

And it all went up in smoke.

Oil pressure claimed yet another victim as Kawasie grinded to a halt on the front straightaway. The car would not go any more.

And then there were two.

Edwards pulled into the lead in a shining moment for Super Aguri. Shepherd was behind him and Beyens was in 5th.

However, Beyens was on a different pit strategy, and he quickly inherited the lead as the drivers ahead of him all pitted. Suddenly Shepherd was in second and on the wrong end of a 20-second deficit.

Luckily the Ferrari driver had one more pit stop to go - the seconds ticked away as Beyens crawled down pit lane. The Ferrari crew pulled out the clutch pitstop of the century and got him out still in the lead - but by less than a second with 16 laps to go.

The gap would only get smaller. On lap 59 of 71 the two championship contenders screamed across the line side-by-side, the deficit less than 1 TENTH of a second.

The next two laps saw the gap slowly expand to a comparively massive 0.6 seconds, and then on lap 63 Hutchinson in his McLaren, with not much else to do, grenaded his engine.

The Safety Car came out. When it went away, it would be a 5 lap shootout, winner take all.

On lap 2 of the sprint Shepherd made the pass, setting the fastest lap of the race and as they came to the line 0.038 seconds separated Williams from Ferrari.

Not one person sitting in the entire joint.

Was this the end...? Beyens was inclined to disagree. Once again smashing the fastest lap, he roared by Shepherd on the main straightaway on lap 69, opening up a 0.465 second lead.

Somewhere back in the field, Davidson smashed Haswell out of the race.

The lead was cut in half on the penultimate lap of Season 6, but still it was Beyens hanging on to the championship. By a quarter of a second.

The final lap was timed at 1:10:909. Ask anyone else and they'll say it lasted an eternity.

In a perfect world they would have come to the line side-by-side, or wrecked coming out of the final corner, or created even more of a dramatic finish. But this wasn't a perfect world. It was Ferrari's world. Beyens's championship. By 3 points and 285 thousandths of a second.

Still, Williams had one thing to look forward to. A team championship.

Final Standings (Top 10):
Driver's Champion Jef Beyens 78 points
James Shepherd 75 points
Yuuji Kawasie 61 points
