Melbourne race report!

The sun was shining brightly down under this morning for the Australian grand prix. Yameth Zemahj started on pole for the second time this season with Chang and Smith in 2nd and 3rd. The 2 Renaults started from the back row after a dismal qualifying. Rumours suggest that Scott Woodwiss is still locked in his bedroom and his car was today driven by his dog.

The race got underway at 1:03 local time and 4 drivers had massive hiccups, Wonton dropped 6 to 18th, Trendell dropped an incredible 12 to 20th, Taylor dropped 6 to 21st and Charkaoui dropped 5 to last. At the head of the field Smith had overtaken Zemahj for the lead. On lap 2, veteran brits Davidson and Butler were battling for all of 2 corners until Butler overtook the Bracklonian for 7th.

Big mover Beyens was on a roll as he had moved up 8 places from the start of the race and found himself 10th at the end of lap 3. Butler was also moving nicely. After starting 9th he had moved up to 5th by the end of lap 4, despatching Horton cleanly and the followed that up by breezing past Hutchison.

Zemahj's luck seemingly only extends to his qualifying as he has started on pole twice and yet only had 2 points. However Melbounre wasnt getting better for him as he made a driver error and had to pit to fix some damage.

Zemahj pitted then from 2nd place, Butler moved into 2rd, Hutchison 3rd and Chang slipped back to 4th. Then going into the 4th last corner, Danny Graham made an exceptional move on Wontons Williams, about 100 metres from the turn Graham outbroke Wonton and still easily made the turn which isnt ordinarily known for its overtaking.

And to round out an eventful opening 8 laps, Suzanne Taylor collided with Scott Woodwiss' dog, both were fine on the circuit.

Butler and Hutchison both pitted on lap 11 from 2nd and 3rd, leaving people puzzled as to their strategy. Masons Renault followed them the lap after. The race leader David Smith pitted on lap 17 dropping him down to 7th. On lap 19 it was Dunstan and Dubois leading the way, but they collided coming out of turn 1, both cars were fine and continued.
Dubois and Dunstan come together

Dubois and Davidson pitted from 1-2 on lap 21 and went to 5-6. Horton took the lead with Butler 2nd. Kawasie made an error on lap 22 resulting in him needing to pit to fix some damage. On lap 25 Davidson had a scare when he collided with Dubois while battling for P5, Davidson lost position and Dubois needed to pit after the incident. Lap 26 saw a scary moment for Honda, Butler pitted from the lead but Dubois also pitted from 5th, however the cars avoided eachother as Butlers stop was quick and he was out before Dubois reached the space.

The following lap Butler and hutchison collided, Hutchison had some damage but Butler drove on losing a position. On lap 32, Dubois V Dunstan commenced, emotions ran high after their earlier collision so this was to be heated. Dubois stayed behind Dunstan the whole time but regularly got alongside in an attempt to pass. During this on lap 36 Butler made a small error. Eventually on lap 38 Dubois found a way through.

On lap 40 an amazing 8 cars pitted in, 2 got held up by their mechanics, Aguris Schwarz and Williams' Wonton. Lap 44 saw the demise of Duncan, his Ferraris exhaust let go and he retired from P7.

The safety car came in at the end of lap 46. smith wa sleading with Horton 2nd and Chang 3rd. It was looking good for both Horton and Smith but on lap 50 they collided taking both cars out of the race handing Lee Davidson the lead out of nowhere!

Lap 55 saw Butler take 3rd place from Chang and then lap 56 he passed Beyens for 2nd. In the end Lee Davidson held on for victory with Butler 3 seconds behind and chang 4th for BMW.

Butler takes 2nd

So a good win for Lee, his first in 2 seasons. Butler takes the championship lead and Honda lead the constructors.

CCYoshi's Destruction Index, Round 3: Melbourne

Suffice to say, it was a high scoring race. And for some reason a lot of people can't seem to get a clean quali in (not to mention a clean race), so there was only one non-scorer (a good thing, usually) in Australia.

Give a hand to Herman Chang of BMW! And with a podium too, I guess it actually was a pretty nice race for you.

As for the other end, Honda's turned violent! Relatively, although as whole they're still the safest team.

Guillaume Dubois (Honda) and Anton Wonton (Williams) both topped the charts with 9 points each, while Suzanne Taylor (Toro Rosso) and Duncan Hutchinson (Ferrari) had 8.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest jumps in overall position came from normally calm midfield in the standings, with the Shark jumping (is that backwards? ^^) 7 positions and the Dunc 6 up to a 4-way 11th tie. Dubois, just on the outside of this, went up only 5.

Biggest drops were shared by Chang (no points) and Shepherd (1 point), who both fell 8 positions to 18th and 21st.

And now for the overall rankings!

1st (tie): The Sting II (Bee) (McLaren, +0), David "Aggro-low-blows" Smith (BMW Sauber, +1), 'omg a girl driver hawt lol' Taylor (Toro Rosso, +2): 21 points

4th: Appie Charkaoui (Midland, -1): 17 points

5th: Yameth 'Is this a word scramble?' Zemahj (Red Bull, +1): 15 points

6th (tie): Luke Mason (Renault, -3), The Sting I (Beyens) (Red Bull, +1), Tag Schwarz (Super Aguri, +1), Danny-G (Midland, +1): 14 points

And that, if you've been counting, will take you up to 10 drivers, despite all the ties.

Toro Rosso's Simon Trendell still enjoys being the lowest in DI (3 points) and WDC (0 points).

Things are heating up in the front - Davidson, having unfortunately won the previous race, is losing points to his competitors Taylor and Smith, who impressively scored 6 in a firey exit from the race from the lead. 4th and 5th are pretty clear and then there's 8 drivers tied for 6th and 11th with 14 and 13 points. Who will be the destruction king?

...who wants to be? :nervous: (*slowly raises hand*)

I'd much rather trade in the Destructo-Champ for a Drivers Championship..

OMG That so wasn't fair!

I start right at the back, eventually work my way up to P1, then make a mistake 8 laps later, knocking me out of the race! :(:(:(

You did your testing while I was in the middle of mine you fool.

I was going to tell you in team talk to just load my setup and save your tires.

Philip Nel is giving away three KT accounts to "worthy players", and Jack Renyard nominated me, but Boothy shot it down, so if you guys back me up when I said I do all my runs, post in team talk yadda yadda, and say something that would help my cause/argument, 👍

So that is McLaren, Honda and Ferrari filling 3 of the Top 4, but oh no, where be Renault? :p
