I just stumbled accross something very strange.
I was searching through the servers looking for a game when I accidently joined a game with no players. The usual waiting for 7 players to start came up but I was free to roam around and do what I wanted.

Considering the round was at Caspian I jumped into the attack heli to fine tune my
awesome crap piloting skills and proceeded to base rape the Russian deployment.
Sadlly you don't score any points though but if someone is looking to practice flying or whatever without getting shot at it's fine.
I also tried at another server with zero players (there's plenty there) and the same thing happened. I'm pretty sure previously when there wasn't enough players you had to wait for enough to join before you could move.
Can anyone confirm?
Cheers Shaun.
Was it custom or Dice server? Gotta try this. I remember in BC2 it was 6 or 8 players in server and you start getting points.
Any empty server will do that. Until the minimum players is reached, it acts like an unranked match
Ok thanks 👍.
Just I was sure near release of the game you couldn't move until the minimun player allotment was reached.
Cheers Shaun.
And yes Gunda, when everyone bails from a lobby, you can spend as long as you like in there, flying about or just killing each other; but you won't score any points until there are at least 4 on each side, I think.
Good for practice though......

👍
Sorry to bring this up again but you guys seem to have mis-understood my original post.
Driving to work today with the two guys that I play BF3 (between us we have 500hrs gametime) with we had a disscusion about this. We are all sure that early on after release of the game if you joined a server with less than the minimum players required you had to wait until the required players joined before starting.
It is
NOT the case now.
Let me explain.
After work today:
I joined an empty server at Firestorm to practice my chopper skills, I'm flying around happily shooting all sorts of stuff but getting no points.
About ten minutes later one of my mates joins my game and he is in my squad, I'm assuming he's in my squad because we are in a platoon on the Battlelog site.
The game counts down,
resets itself and starts, we are now on opposite teams. We both get into a chopper and he shoots me disabling my chopper. I bail out and check the scores, he now has 250pts

. Remember
we are the only two in the server.
I get in another chopper and we play a bit of Top Gun just flying around for practice (well me anyway). I now land my chopper next to a flag, I capture it and recieve the points for it.
Still only two in the server.
At this stage three other guys turn up and start playing thus ending our opportunity to test all aspects of the scoring system. I'd be happy to bet though that even with only
two in the server all the kills, ribbons, upgrades for weapons, aircraft, everything will count.
We are going to test it a bit later tonight to conform this but if this isn't a glitch it does open up a can of worms. Between two people you could quite easily cheat your way to every unlock, ribbon, medal in the game (with a few exceptions) apart from the co-op stuff. Sure it would take some time but it seems possible.
More testing is required and we will do a bit more tonight.
Oh by the way this was all on a private server.
Cheers Shaun.
