Be careful walking along piers...

The other day i was out at Aramoana on the Otago Peninsula (across the harbour from the only mainland Royal Albatross Colony in the world - i could easily see them with and without binoculars) here in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand and decided to walk up the end of the (rock) pier thingy.

When i was nearly at the tip of it i came across this swimming around in the water;

Then i looked along towards the end of the pier thing and saw another swimming in the water. So i started walking towards the end of it, to these big rocks which i was planning on standing on, and i just started walking past a big rock when i heard "Wwwwooooorrrrrrrrrgggghhh!!!!" - i look to my right and see this about a metre or less away;

So i backed off a bit and took a picture of it.

Then i looked around the rest of the end of the pier and there were at least ten or so seals just laying around, or cleaning/scratching themselves. Was also a dead one on the rocks which kinda stunk out the place.

May not seem like much to some people, but this was the first time i'd ever seen seals this close (last time i just saw one ages away on a beach in the city) so thought it was pretty awesome. They have warning signs up saying to watch out for yellow eyed penguins, but it says nothing about seals! 8)

So yeah, if you're on a pier thingy like this and hear a roar, it means you're too close to a seal resting in the sun!

Hmmm that's pretty cool, the only place I've ever seen seals was a Sea World.

Coolies! :)

The only seal I’ve seen in the wild was a dead one washed up on the beach – poor thing had its head ripped off. Really disgusting, and a good way to ruin a day on the beach (when it washed back into the water, I was terrified to go in the water – what if I ran into it? or got seal blood on me?).

Sage: ever seen that picture that explains why the sea is so salty?

anyway, that's really cool mustang-man. It must've felt really strange to see an animal as cute and furry as a seal so up close.

A few years ago when I was down your way visiting family, we went to the beach. I think it was out Green Island way and we had to walk down through a tunnel to get there. Not sure of the location, but there was definately a tunnel.

Anyway, when we got out of the tunnel, about 15m away was a huge seal, very similar to the ones in your pictures, but it seemed bigger. This thing was huffing and puffing too, and stunk of fish...

Having seen on Discovery channel how fast these things can move on land I wasn't keen on getting too close, but we circled around it for a look, staying about 7-10m from it. When it opened it's mouth it had some very pointy teeth I didn't want to get near.

So, this thing was a novelty to look at, but it kind of ruined our beach outing. We were intimidated by it (and it stank) so beach activities were out of the question. Made for an interesting holiday highlight though. :)

We also get these things up here at our port, but none as big as the one I saw down there. Up here they're usually on rocks, out of our way like in your pictures - not on the in the way...

Good to see these ones weren't shot at by All Blacks... :dunce:

Very nice pics 👍!

btw

WHAT the hell do you do at a NZ beach? it would be way to cold to swim?

Much better way to spend a afternoon at the beach!!! 👍

BTW ive only seen seals at seaworld also!

would be interesting seeing them in the wild for sure.

After I beat up a seal back in '92, they stopped coming around southern ontario. Then I hit my head, and lost all memory of the deal, so to my mind, i've never seen a seal, which is why whenever I go to Sea World, I throw my helmet off and scream "look mom a seal! I've never seen one before!" and she goes "yes hunny, put your helmet back on" and we continue our day.

Lucky you, in two ways, for seeing that in the wild, and for not getting attacked by one of them. I heard male seals can be pretty violent when the females come into heat, count yourself lucky ya came at the wrong time of the month!

Cool pics Mustang Man! Definitely gets my seal of approval! :D Here in the UK, you also have to be quite careful around Piers...

Where I come from, Edinburgh (old name: Dunedin 👍 ), there is a small island in the Firth of Forth called Cramond, which at low tide you can walk out to - there are usually plenty of seals in the Firth (and occasionally a lost whale or two), and on a trip out on the Firth, you're virtually guaranteed to see some seals. Although I never did it myself, it was practically a rite of passage to spend a night on Cramond Island as a teenager with a bunch of mates... allegedly you could never quite tell what you would wake up next to! (that was my mate Nick's excuse anyway ;) )

Anyway, once again, great pics... :)

Ah, that would be Tunnel Beach. ;) I still haven't been there yet but the rest of the family has. :cool:
