C3 Vette Chapter 2
I sped through the cliffs made by the Big Thompson River, unable to wait to see what my car could do. When I got to the track I met my competitors and looked at their cars. All of them looked really nice: a dark red Fairlady Z, a dark blue NSX (I had never seen an NSX before that day), a silver Impreza, a blue Impreza, and finally a red RX-7. Then there was my car: and old and dirty american muscle car. Based on what I knew about the other cars, I would probably be outperformed in the corners, but the faster sections were mine. I prepared my car in the small ways I could, and then I was called onto the track over the intercom. I strapped into the car and drove to my spot on the grid. The yellow lights turned on, I flipped down my helmet visor, and the green light flashed.
I got off to a slow start because I was light on the throttle (I didn't want to spin the tires), but by the first corner I was back with the pack. When I got to the chicane I passed the RX-7 and on the next turn I passed the NSX and blue Impreza. I passed the Z cautiously on the hairpin near the end of the track and, believe it or not, took first place on the last chicane! Even I couldn't believe I had first place by the end of the lap! The second lap was pretty uneventful, with me playing the role of leader for the whole time (though I was really nervous about making a mistake). I took my first win! I was so happy, I might as well have been in heaven. I was also very pumped up. In fact, I was so pumped up I had one of my crew members drive me home because I didn't want a speeding ticket!
The following day I looked at the results online. They looked like this:
I didn't know I had such a big lead! Later that day I got a phone call from the SCCA Muscle Car Competition race organizers, who said that I was invited to be part of that series since one of their scouts saw my amazing win. I said I would show up, and once I was off the phone I yelled, jumped, and danced for joy. All I had to do then was buy some plane tickets to go to New York and wait for about 3 weeks.
