You're right, I interpreted CNN Sports wrong.

In any case, ten runs in the first inning isn't exactly good for any team to give up (though it's "natural" for the D-Rays to give up)

by the way: That game was a double-header, and in the second game of it, the D-Rays won, meaning that the Sox, despite winning by 17, kept their exact same place in their division after it.
