Best Graphic Settings on GT5

I've notcied lots of jagged lines which can be annoying, haven't got round to playing with settings yet asthe game holds my attention too much! I'm sure messing around the sharpness settings will cure it a little bit

I'm playing on a 55" rear projection Sony HD TV with hdmi connection, 1080P .

Overall the graphics are pretty outstanding.

The only thing I notice a lot is the jaggy shadows.

Other than that, a few little flaws here and there, (the standards we know are not as good) its pretty impressive.

Drove the lotus 11r in Gt5 can't make out the dials it's just a blurry mess. It was clear on gt5p. What is going on? Also the mini copper was clearer. I thought it was meant to improve not go backwards.

I don't think the jaggy shadows have anything to do with a TV setting. I have been reading a lot on other sites and they are all saying the same things. One, the shadows look horrible. Two, the standard cars look horrible. I think any of the sharpness issues can be corrected to a point by your TV, PS3 and GT5 settings. I don't think it will fix everything but you will probably notice a difference. Also, when getting a HDMI cable make sure you get a high speed one, that might help a little bit.

I think that because of the size of the game, sacrifices are always made. I think the developers thought that having a game that ran at 60fps was more important that making everything look as amazing as possible. When you get into some online races you have to sacrifice something also when in single player with the speed and frame rate something has to give. Now my argument loses weight when you talk about getting to the very high levels.

For whatever reason the game changes with damage and look the better you get at the game and the better cars you are using. Do I agree with it? Not really. But I think they did some of these things for people that have not really played a GT game before. It is not an arcade style game and it does take a little time to get used to the controls and the differences between cars. I think the damage system is just a function of leveling yourself up. They probably thought that at that time you would better at managing the damage and how your cars will handle differently.

Is the game perfect? No I don't think so. I did think that some of these issues we are talking about would not be in this game. So I think some of what we are talking about is a level of disappointment because we waited so long. But when you get behind the car and start racing, damn there is nothing that comes close. The game is great, there are flaws it won't be perfect.

Hi Guys
do keep the postings running and hope we can get an optimum setting. Tks to Robulus posting i tested for 2hours last night on display setting but instead i used the PS3 GAME SETTING - upscaler and smoothing function which turn out no different. Tonight i will try to force ps3 to output 720P and see how.

Guys I feel the full Suzuka track is the best to test for the jaggies and fickering.. When your car moving off from start line, there are alot of white lines fickering effect of the track markings and the fences..you see the whites lines keep blinking at you... i tried several testing to see if the effect will be better.. Even tuning the sharpness of my 720P projector and absolutely no effect as well... Hope can find a solution or PD, pls give us a magical patch (although i know it takes miracle for this)

I don't have time to read the whole thread so I hope this isn't redundant.

When I open my image quality options menu my res is set to 1920x1080.

I'm using a 23" hannspree hdmi capable monitor. Everything looks great to me besides the very random and sparse jagged shadow.

The gauges looked way too blurry unlike GT5P where I could easily read the speedometer but in GT5 it's very blurry. I adjusted sharpness from my TV to 100% ... didn't work.

Just thought I'd throw in my personal opinion on 'Sharpness' settings on modern displays.

[RANT]
Sharpness is a horrible, horrible abomination and the first thing I do on any new TV on any input I am using is set it to 0.

It is a digital effect that artificially enhances edges, thereby introducing noise to any form of media. It's terrible on movies, awful on TV and ghastly on video games.

The sole useful purpose for the existence of the 'Sharpness' setting is to turn it up on showroom displays, along with colour and contrast, so that the picture pops and we poor dead eyed consumers mumble about it looking 'nice and clear'.

Here is a screen shot showing the difference on my 720p display between the 1080i output and 720p output from the PS3. The shots are taken with a camera in front of my plasma, but even with the poor quality the difference can be seen, in front of the display it is very obvious. It's pretty much impossible to show the differences in game between the two (with the equipment I have anyway) but looking at these images I'm pretty sure you'll get the idea.

So is the output of the game 720p? I have a 1080p HD TV, should I go to the PS3 settings and set it on 720p and take off 1080p so it doesn't get downscaled to 720p? (I always have 1080i unchecked).

Gt5 can output at 1080p, and is apparently full of awesome. My experience is only with my system, which has a 720p display.

If your display is definitely 1080p native, you should leave 1080p checked. From what I've read it's a good idea to uncheck 1080i, as you have done.

Hi Pals
i wish to give some updates following advice from Robulus
i finally tested after two nights of 5 hours testing n comparing. ps3 display setting to 720p did improve the graphics and i am very happy. The suzuka circuit is my test platform and when at 1080i there are lot of flickering white dots at the lanes marking and everwhere seems flashing and flickering when there are white lane lines... this is really distracting and annoying.

Hence i force my ps3 to output only 720p at video display setting to match my projector native 720p.. the improvement is 10-20% noticeable...i am not sure is this consider improvement in the jaggies issue. Nonetheless I will stick to this setting as it indeed looks better, smoother and more like GTp style now. The only setback is that it loose 5 % sharpness compare to 1080i which is fine for me.

Hope you all can try and feedback.

I've found an interesting problem whereby when you have the r33gtr skyline premium and light up all the tyres as you look through the rear window the demister lines across it go absolutely crazy as the smoke drifts across it.

Iplay on a 1080p PC monitor (BenQ G2220HD), game looks amazing generally, I have it set to sharpen graphics in main menu. Only issue is sometimes in tunnels on replays/bspec gets a little blocky in the shadowed areas other than that cant complain. :)

My issue is the reverse of what I am reading here, I have a standard definition plasma, when I had the PS3 set to standard definition GT5 looked worse than GT5P, in most games setting the PS3 improves the image but makes it too dark, some games are impossible to play like this. Setting the PS3 to 720 has dramatically improved the image, the tracks now look better than GT5P but the gauges still look worse. The rest of the interior is different, it is sharper but it doesn't look right. I'm going to play with the settings on the TV and see if I can get it better.

I don't have a HDMI cable so for now I am running the component cable.

Oh i have that too, like you mean when they run into a dark area in general, the colors (not the shadows of the car) gets pixelated with like a filter over it, blocky and weird sometimes.

I use ps full HD screen too.

Loads of great info on the graphics of GT5 here:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-gran-turismo-5-tech-analysis?page=6

They also test (and include full res shots) the graphic options like sharpness and anti-flicker of GT5.

Outstanding article. Everyone interested in this thread should take the time to read that. To briefly summarize my interpretation of their work and the comments here : If you have a native 720p TV, use that resolution. For a 1080p set use that resolution. Although the 1080P setting for GT5 is not really 1080p (It is 1280x1080) you do get increased resolution versus the 720p output. The Sharpen and Reduce flickering options for image quality seem to have no effect whatsoever in HD resolutions and may have been intended to help with SD tv setups. I'm using 1080p output to a 1080p TV and I am more than happy with the results. Perhaps there are imperfections here or there but in my opinion those are irrelevant. The game looks damn good to my eye and I bought it to drive, not ogle replays looking for flaws - I'm not saying that's what everyone else is doing of course, but try to focus on the positive and you'll get tons of enjoyment from this game.

Once you've configured your settings as well as possible, just sit back and drive the balls off the thing :) The PS3 is dated tech and can't handle the level of performance we expect of it today. Nonetheless I feel PD have done a remarkable job getting what they did from it. Roll on PS4/GT6 !!!
