Can you help a noob out? Can you give clear step instructions for this?
I have Samsung TV with a HDMI cable and apparently I'm on 1080i
Find out what the top resolution of your display is, not what it will accept, but it's top native resolution. As a rule of thumb, if you have "Full HD" or "True HD", it will be 1080i or 1080p. If you have HD, but not "Full" or "True" HD, that is generally 720p.
On your PS3, go to "settings", "display settings", "video output settings".
First you select your connection type, leave this as is.
You should get an option to choose "automatic" or "custom". Choose custom.
The next selection is supported display resolutions. This is the one we are interested in. On my system, it had three supported resolutions checked:
- 576p (standard def on PAL)
- 720p
- 1080i
My display is 720p maximum native resolution, but it will accept 1080i and downscale it. We don't want that to happen.
If your display is 720p, and you have 1080i checked, uncheck it. The PS3 will test the new display, get you to confirm you can still see it, you can then scroll through any other options and save the changes.
That is what I have done and tested, and on my system the difference was night and day.
From reading this thread, there are at least two other things that might improve graphics on some displays:
1. If your display is 1080i / 1080p, but your top supported option on the PS3 settings above is 1080i, you may get an improvement dropping back to 720p, because progressive scan looks better than interlaced.
2. In the GT display settings, set output to 100%.
