As the news came across today about the Astra comming here, I'm surprised nobody nominated the Astra VXR for the competition. Too late now I suppose, but even then, I still would have gone with the GTI. It clearly is the superior car, not just as a sporting vehicle, but as something you can live with every day.

To me, thats what makes a car a "Best" vehicle. Of course, everyone may be a bit different, and thats okay. But in the long run, I'd want a car that can be fun, and at the same time can be comfortable. I don't have a lot of money to throw around, thus I would want a little bit of everything in what I buy. Hence the reason why I not only nominated the GTI, but have continued to vote for it, round-after-round.

Sure, it may not be the sportiest of the bunch, and to be honest, it never has. That seat has been reserved for the R32 over the past few years, and thats okay. But what the GTI does best is blend the ability to run with the best hot-hatches out there, and yet be comfortable enough to drive home on a B-road with the significant other, maybe the dog, or maybe even a kid or two in back. Sure, you can do it with some of the other cars, but the comfort will be a lot higher with the GTI, I can almost guarantee it.

But even then, it pretty much is pointless for us to quibble about the two cars. IMO, the wrong car is winning here in this situation, but alas, you cannot stop democracy at work. IMO, the Civic was always a better sedan than a hatch, and I think one can deduct that the only reason why it is currently winning is because of the Type-R fanboism. But, that is just my opinion...

What it comes down to is this: You either want compromise, or you want the best in performance. If anything, the Clio is at the pinnacle of recent Hot Hatches. The GTI is the ever-evolving gentleman's hatch that although has grown up, still maintains much of its funky spirit that made it famous. The Civic? Well, lets just say "its a Civic."

The 4g CRX/hatch was a hell of a car, having owned one...I can say I'd be happy to see it win! (although I didn't vote that way)

The polls still don't take into account that the Clio sport isn't sold outside Europe.

Actually, that's untrue, as we've had it down here for years. Albeit, we don't have the new Clio Sport model yet (197?), only the basic one. But it's coming soon I believe. We had the 182.

Actually, a hot hatch is pretty much anything popular in the sport-compact segment that is a hatchback. The GTI is very much that. So is the Focus--old and new--and neither that or the GTI are "lightweights". Sounds like the next WRX will be a hot hatch, also. DO think a hot hatch should cost $30,000? It will, and it will be very hot.
Which is exactly why I said "in the vein of the 'original' hot hatch."

Well, the Civic won by a larger margin than I ever would have expected. IMO, I would have thought it between the GTI and Reanult, but it just didn't work out that way. Too bad really, as IMO, they are the real winners here. But we aren't doing any kind of comparison overall here, just doing some poking around for fun...

Really, well I don't know much at all about the Australian market, I was very suprised to see a member talking about seeing an Esprit on the Gold coast. It's not sold in American that's for certain, and the polls don't take that into accout, a car that's sold in all markets is more likely to get more votes, not because it's better but because more people know about it, and have seen it. Not knocking the polls ofcourse, I like these threads a lot, and the winner of the polls has to be the winner, theres no other way to do it, but it just makes for an interesting angle in debates ;).
