Alrighty, time to see what all this fandom has taught me.
Asuka (even before her mother's suicide) felt abandoned, because she was, when her mother went nuts with her Eva experiments she took a doll in as if it was Asuka, therefore completely neglecting the REAL Asuka; after losing her mind, Kyoko (Asuka's mother) wanted to die with her daughter, she hung herself not before hanging the doll, as I said, she went nuts. After the funeral Asuka promised herself (unsuccessfully might I add) to never cry again, ever. Her father never really spent much time with her either and most definetely neither did her step-mother who came later after Kyoko's death.
Seeing how anybody and everybody didn't care about her, Asuka convinced herself that in that case, she wouldn't need anybody, she would be 'self-sufficient', graduating at 13-14 years old proves how much she was trying to get people to see her as an adult. She has a right to be how she is. The two people who were supposed to love her unconditionally (her parents) neglected and abandoned her at a young age, pretty much assassinating her ability to relate to people normally and giving her a barn full of trust and abandonment issues. Her own parents treated her like she wasn't worth anything, hence her obsession with being the best. Acting superior and keeping people away assures her she isn't going to get abandoned by anyone again because they won't get close in the first place. Same deal with Shinji, he just does it the other way around, he avoids people.
Throughout time however, Asuka realizes that she doesn't want to be alone anymore. (watch the movie, I'm not gonna delve into details about that here)
I'm not trying to get you to like her, I'm just asking you (begging you if you will
) to try and understand why she is the way she is.
