Anything by John Williams... the greatest composer living!!

Examples: E.T., Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Dances with Wolves, Star Wars, A.I.

John Barry did Dances with Wolves, along with some of the James Bond stuff. He's really good.

Then there's always Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke.

Both excellent soundtracks.

no no no, you have got it all wrong the best soundtrack is to Bladerunner, by Vangelis, stunning!!!

Another great one, but Vangelis's best work is Chariots of Fire.

I'd say Star Wars and Army of Darkness- I am a big Elfman fan.

Elfman did better work for Spiderman, Batman, and Edward Scissorhands (which is some really great stuff).

Requiem for a Dream. Nothing comes close.

It has one good track. The rest are repeats. It's like Last of the Mohicans in that respect, in that its a one trick pony.

I have trouble voting for just one, so I figured I'd have to mention a few others

Honorable Mentions

Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore really put together some beautiful music for that trilogy
Edward Scissorhands
Final Fantasy Video Games - Nobuo Uematsu put together some absolutely unprecedented video game music that really set these games apart.
Matrix - Don Davis has some great stuff in these soundtracks - it's not all techno, although the techno is good too.
Bram Stoker's Dracula - Some absolutely wonderful music by Wojciech Kilar
Medicine Man - Goldsmith lays it down.
Chariots of Fire - Gotta Love Vangelis

1st Place(s)
Gladiator - Hans Zimmer lays out his masterpeice
Braveheart - James Horner does his best work
The Wall - Pink Floyd really outdid themselves

I couldn't see only putting one type of soundtrack in first place. I felt like it wasn't fair to compare Rock with Orchestral. And then I couldn't figure out if Braveheart or Gladiator was better.

Elfman's Batman and Batman Returns scores are marvelous. Braveheart is also one of the best ever; it has a great range of love, tragic, heroic and action.

I really like The Rock. It has FOUR distinct themes, which is crazy for a single movie score.

Of course the Star Wars mucis is awesome. My favourite track is from the final duel between Luke and Vader in the Emperor's Throne Room from The Return Of The Jedi.

I also really like Neodammerung, the score to the end fight between Neo and Smith in Matrix Revolutions.

I am a HUGE movie score fan, but nowhere near as big as my best friend. He operates Cinemusic.net (www.cinemusic.net) as well as Danny Elfman's Music For A Darkened People (www.filmmusic.elfman.com). Check them both out!!

I nominate Spawn for the "worst movie with the best soundtrack" award.
Crimson Tide (Hans Zimmer) and Spy Game (Harry Gregson-Williams) were really good.

Was gonna make a separate topic but then found this one in search, so I figured time to bring it back to the surface because there have been some interesting films since February 05 when the last post was made. (EG: King Kong, War of the Worlds.)

If a mod thinks this thread doesn't deserve to be bumped, I apologise.

Currently, I think the best music to any film is the score Hans Zimmer produced for The Last Samurai. Music goes perfectly with the film, and the film is BRILLIANT.

2nd Star Wars
3rd Batman Begins
4th Gladiator
5th Terminator 2

and mentions go out to Star Trek, Stargate, Batman and Pirates of the Carribean

I'd have to say, Terminator 2 has one of the best theme tunes in any movie. In terms of great movie soundtracks, theres so many good ones that have been mentioned, the first Matrix film had the best of the three, the Start wars films had very good music that fitted to the films well, Gladiator, The Rock, The Wall, Chariots of Fire and I thought the Collateral soundtrack was good as well, it fit the film really well.

Im going to get a serious burning here but I would have to say I like the Harry Potter soundtracks (all 4) The Lost Boys, Blade Runner.

I still love the soundtrack to Shrek, but I have a new favorite. School of Rock .

Then there's Tommy, The Song Remains the Same, Woodstock and Rattle and Hum which all are concert or music video movies.

I almost restarted this thread a week ago myself. Odd.

Good call. John Williams did the first three and they're quite good. Number 4 is really good at parts as well.

The movies are crap though.

Rogue Ssv
Thats what you think...:grumpy:

Have you listened to the scores? The instrumental and techno stuff is really quite good. Though, I admit I am biased as I hate rage against the machine. I really don't think they should qualify as part of the soundtrack since they aren't actually used IN the movie.

I agree with dan here, the score music is better I find. For example, when the population of Zion is dancing in the temple caves, that song they play is awesome!

Yeah, but that song is not part of the score. It's actually by Fluke, and (suprise!) it's called Zion.

I'm going to say the soundtrack from Akira is one of my favourites. Geinoh Yamashirogumi's composition and how it links with the movie is awesome. The soundtrack from The Princess Bride, by Mark Knopfler was also pretty nice.

L4S mentioned Terminator 2, and I'll also mention Terminator (the 1st one). Brad Fiedel is great at techno-ish soundtracks. Check out True Lies as well.

I also liked a lot the soundtrack of Requiem for a Dream. Although the music gets on your nerves most of the time, it fits the movie perfectly. Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet set the mood.

But the all-time best soundtrack for me is The Big Blue, by Eric Serra.

Le Grande Bleu soundtrack by Serra is awesome. What about 'the Last Emperor' by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Or the soundtrack to 'The Mission'. Or the soundtrack for 'Dracula'. I love music scores but detest pop-song filled soundtracks.

Well it seems most of the Soundtracks id have chosen have already been picked. The Gladiator, Bladerunner, The Matrix (first one), Reservoir Dogs, Lord of the Rings, Edward Scissorhands are all outstanding.

The Wall - Pink floyd is also an excellent album

However something a little more leftfield - Transformers the movie soundtrack. Ok maybe not the best in the world but it does have a certain charm to it and never fails to put a smile on my face.

Spec....

I'm sorry Ben. The Wall is not the soundtrack for the movie. The movie is more like the "video-track" of the album. The movie is from 1982 while the album is from 1979. There are a couple of songs that are in the movie and not in the album, though.

The soundtrack of The Mission is awesome. The one from The Last Emperor I didn't like much. And the one from Dracula is excellent; I forgot who composed it, though. I know it's mostly piano, though.

For the worst soundtrack, I vote for 12 Monkeys; although some songs are good, the overall soundtrack is horrible.

It's those 3 songs from Kick Axe, isn't it?

Wojciech Kilar, and there is almost no piano. Mostly strings. You must be thinking of a different Dracula.

Blade Runner seems to be one on everyones list, I also agree with Akira.

"High Fidelity", "Virgin Suicides", "Donny Darko" & "Solaris" go on my list too for good soundtracks, and "Stand By Me".

The Rock has an excellent, fast-paced score with no fewer than FOUR distinct themes (many scores simply have variations on the main theme).

The Last Of The Mohicans is also excellent, as are the scores for the entire LOTR trilogy.

I find it much harder to like an entire score than to like certain tracks from various scores. I like a few tracks from Con Air, Constantine, etc., but I wouldn't say I like the scores as wholes...

American Graffiti

Not only do you get 50s/early 60s music, you also get 50s exhaust notes! :dopey:

With my definition of "soundtrack, I'd have to say the Tuskeegee airmen. I could listen to a Merlin whine all day long...

Batman Begins has a great soundtrack, literally blew me away when i first saw it.

Indeed Batman Begins restored the batman film franchise well.

and I agree with you Anderton on the Rock score. I have it on my computer and it's excellant music. (another Hans Zimmer masterpeice) The music that plays when Ed Harris's character Hummel dies I find is very moving.
Then when they are stealing the VX rockets the music is fast paced and perfect for the action film.
I think my favourite track of the score is Rock House Jail

Also Spec, Transformers the Movie has an awesome soundtrack, both real music and the score I find are good. As for the Terminator scores Fiedel is brilliant and no mistake. Just a shame they didn't get him for the 3rd film cause the 3rd film score was poor. Should a 4th film be made I demand they get back Brad.

Of the 21 tracks on the T3 score I only like 2;

T3: good track, nice tune.
The Terminator: Marco Beltrami's revision of the Terminator theme

yeah, you're right. I was thinking of Philip Glass, but he didn't have anything to do with the Dracula soundtrack. He has however done the soundtrack for Naqoyqatsi and Kundun, both of which I have no idea about.
