Subaru Impreza WRC piloted by Colin McRae

👍

Although I have to admit, most of the cars mentioned above deserve the title " best rally car of all time " aswell. Great times with all those cars, too bad, that WRC is falling into pieces these years :indiff:

I's so many of them that is hard to chose only one. but i think that the most beautiful is Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6

5 Maxi Turbo.

And to a lesser extent Stratos, 037 and 6R4.

Max DC,The 22b is my favorite and I think one of the best Rally cars of all time.

Ever since I was a kid, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale rally car is my no.1 favorite (the one with the Martini Racing paintjob). I just love how it looks in every aspect.

I first saw it in a Sega Rally game for the Sega Saturn, along with this Celica GT-Four (ST205) rally car, which is also one of my favorites:

Despite the fact how those rally cars have stayed in my heart for such a long time, I wouldn't call them the best rally cars, though. I'd say the most legendary rally car is the Lancia Stratos rally car, regarding its extreme performance and capability in winning races:

And....if I didn't remember wrong, I heard this Stratos was in the Sega Rally game as well. It's an unlockable car, I believe...and back then when I was a little kid I never got the chance to see it as a playable vehicle. I suppose I sucked at the game back then

I always loved the sound of the turbo inline 5 engines of the Audi Quattro from the early 1990's.

Also a big fan of Stig Blomqvist who raced Audi's among other great rally cars.

Yo group b cars, im really happy for you and i'mma let you finish but the xsara was one of the best rally cars of all time!

That being said the 03-05STI was the best looking.

The Lancia Delta S4 has to be my favourite rally car.

I like the other Lancia rally cars as well, such as the Delta HF Integrale, Stratos and 037.

Fastest rally car of all time?
That's an easy one...Citroen C4 WRC.

..really...are you sure? Well, I know it's quite successful, Sebastién Loeb drove the Citroën C4 WRC from 2007-2010 and won all those championship titles for those years, but weren't the good old Group B rally cars faster? Say, like the Audi sport quattro S1, for example, as mentioned in your post.

And what about this beast?

But that's not a rally car, that's a hill-climb "car" (or, more accurately, prototype).

Not even close. Modern WRC cars have so much better suspension and ability to put the power to the road that Group B cars are significantly slower over a special stage despite their superior power.

Ah, I see...thanks for the information! 👍
I didn't knew that :dunce:

Oh well...

Sorry for that...thought that as long as it competes at racing on dirt, it could be considered as a rally car.
That was dumb...it sounds like anything that can travel off-road can be called a rally car :dunce:

..right...not specifically built for rallying but as a tough competitor in the Pikes Peak Hillclimb events...

Well... modern rally cars are extremely powerful. The only thing holding them back is the standard air restrictor. At least, that's how it is on the turbocharged cars. Like an engine tuner friend is fond of saying: "Sure, it's just xxx bhp... but how many revs is it making that xxx over?" Top end power is restricted, but there are tricks to fatten out the torque band and power curve under it.

And having said that... looking at some sources... apparently, WRC cars do produce a bit over 300 hp... but in a huge band from around 3k to the rev limiter. That would suggest that these cars could be making 500 or more ponies without the restrictor. Not far off the 600-odd hp that Group B cars were making. Remove the restrictor and size the turbo accordingly, and 600+ hp is not that difficult to achieve with such hardware.

The WRC cars would probably not be all that much faster in a straight line... I think teams would rather use the opportunity of having more power to stuff as much aero into the package as possible (if the rules could be bent to allow it). That's the advantage of more power. You have more push to overcome aero-drag, so you can use more aero to go faster around the turns.

Doesn't Lancia STILL hold the world record for number of WRC Championships with the Stratos O37 and the Detla According to Wiki, they won 10 Championships with the Detla taking home 6 consecutive wins, the Stratos 3 consecutive wins and the 037 with 1. So...Statistically, Lancia has the best Rally cars. I'm sure, if they decided to enter again, they'd start winning again. But, I personally like the Impreza.

Nuff said. I played only the PC version of Sega Rally though. :dopey:

But the annoying part is the ST205 is too embrassing for TTE (i.e. illegal/controversial turbo injector). :irked:

And yes Stratos is unlockable on aforementioned game. ;)

So many folks have posted their favorites as Group B cars, it's worth looking at that era in detail. During the 1982-1986 seasons (61 WRC rallies), Audi Quattro won 20, Peugeot 205 won 17. In a surprise, the Toyota Celica was third with 7, while the Lancia 037 picked up 6, and the Lancia Delta S4 won 4. (Opel, Renault, and Nissan mopped up the remainder.) No Fords, not even close. Among the Audi versions, the A2 won 9, and the original Audi won 7. The spectacular Sport Quattro and the Sport E2/S1 won only a single rally apiece. Technology and power were advancing quickly through the Group B era, so it is useful to look at streaks. In 1982-83, the original Quattro won 9 of 14 during one streak (Mouton and Mikkola). During 1983, Lancia 037 won 5 of 10 (Rohrl and Alen). The two greatest streaks were one by the Quattro A2 in 1983 and 1984 winning 9 of 13 (Blomqvist, Mikkola and Rohrl), and one by Peugeot in 1984-1986 winning 17 of 29 (Vatenen, Salonen, Kankkunen, Saby). In sequence through this period the dominance went from original Audi to Lancia 037 to Audi Quattro A2 to Peugeot 205 T16.

In summary, the last and greatest 2WD rally car was the Lancia Rally 037. The greatest of the Group B cars were clearly Audi Quattro A2 and Peugeot 205 T16.

Those folks who posted the Ford Group B car as the "greatest" really mean it is the one they LIKE the most, but it was not a great rally car.

How can no-one mention the Peugout 206 WRC? 26 wins and was the all time great till a certain Citroen with a french guy called Seb came along...

A bit full circle there? :dunce:

Besides, if we are going to be factual, surely the Citroen C4 would be the most successful now?
Best is quite a subjective word anyway, so while your idea of the best rally car might be due to statistics, not everyone's is.

When people mention cars such as the RS200, it only had a short career before Group B was canned. Similar to the Metro 6R4, Citroen BX... all thes cars had potential but because the category was canned - that was that Going by the record books can be misleading. Who have Citroen had to face in the past few years apart from Ford? A weak Subaru and terrible Suzuki. The 206 had to fend off Subaru at it's height, the birth of the Xsara WRC, as well as Ford with Mcrae and Sainz, not forgetting that Skoda and Hyundai who added depth to proceedings.
