What's the best consumer transmission? I don't know any names and I tried searching Google, but there were too many websites. What are the good ones and what are the marginal ones?

You mean a transmission you can buy for your car as an upgrade? Or which manufacturer has the best transmission?

For what kind of car?
If your talking about something Japanese for drifting, I would say add a Quaife LSD, and you should be okay.
All of the Popular Japanese manufacturers overbuild their cars. The bottom end (everything below the cylinder head) of the Nissan SR-20 engine is factory-built to handle upwards of 400HP. I imagine they do the same for trannys.
If it's a newer American V-8, check into Tremec industries
They build the aftermarket manual tranny of choice for Mustangs.

As far as the SR20DE(T) goes the crank itself can handle upwards to 500HP, and I'm not positive on the connecting rod durability, but it's up there aswell, due to rediculous amounts of shotpeening from the factory, as or the question about "BMW transmission upgrade". There isn't really one, asside from perhaps finding a transaxle that will fit in place, with closer gears. What model BMW are we talking about?

The stock manual in the 3-Series is bulletproof, and idiot proof.
I read an account of a racing school instructor (at Bondurant's school, I believe) who finally got on a student for shifting it back into too low a gear on a certain corner, because it was giving him just the right "set" going into the corner, by jerking the rear around.
The student did this several times, (like 8-10) before the instructor finally told him that he was gonna get "stabbed in the hand with a screwdriver" if he didn't find someway, other than abusing the engine, transmission and LSD, to get thru that corner.
I think it was either Car and Driver, or Road and Track. But this was several years ago that I read that so I can't remember where I saw it.

The Z4's aren't that smooth compared to the Z3's IMO *shrugs*

I was talking about the 1995 BMW 318ti. It has an automatic, but my friend was wondering about the best transmission for his new RSX :yuck:

ewww tranny for an RSX?? there should be plenty of tuning companies that have some, but I dont know anything about moding japanese cars, therefore i dont know which is best. On the other hand, I know alot about BMW, Audi, VW tuning ...seeing as my dad has a 328i 1998, and I got a Golf... Couldnt have told your friend to buy an Integra Type R with really low mileage? I hate the RSX, sorry if im offending any RSX fans.

You're not the only person that doesn't like RSX's seeing as how Honda engineers must have been under the influence while designing the RSX/Integra. The DC5 Chassis/body is just horrible looking. Along with that, the invention of the "I-vtec" feature was a step back in performance, considering to get optimum performance from it, you have to buy a device to disengage the "intelligent" aspect of it. Oh well. I don't think they have many performance transmissions for the RSX yet, unless you just want to buy the Integra Type R Transmission or Type S final drive gear or something, or install a LSD. But I don't like that car.

He should just upgrade to a better car instead of a better transmission.

Gil - Do you know how hard it would be to swap out a factory '97 Trans Am 6 speed for a Chevy TH400?

What transmission would you suggest for a full-blown drag Trans Am? Preferably a 2 speed, or 3 speed, auto capable of handling power in excess of 1500hp, and 2000 ft/lbs of tq.

A little off topic, I know, but would anyone here happen to have any experience with turbocharged/nitrous'ed/alcohol/nitro/or-any-other-type-of-****-like-that big blocks?

aftermarket? i havent looked to much at aftermarket trannies, but know quaife (the diff maker) makes them. if i remember correctly they have 6 speed sequential trannies for like $11k. that would be badass.

Because 6 speeds are **** for drag racing. The weight differences of the two wouldn't be too big of an issue at these hp levels.
