Black Friday

Yeah, and uhh... I haven't, my mom hasn't, no one in my family went shopping today. Well, I did this morning after or during my morning run, and I bought a pack of DVD-R's. I got a 15 pack for $8. I was gonna get another one but I couldn't find any :( My mommy is buying me a 50 pack though :D

I bought my Mother a Sony Home Theater system, not an expensive one though. They original price was like about $750 and I got it for $500.

I could have bought another computer but then I realized I had to stop buying things I don't need just because they're on sale. I mean, I know it's only once a year, but I don't really need another computer to take up space in my room.

Many stores opened at 10:00 at night and closed at 6am, then they re-opened at 11 am. It's just pandemonium out there.

Ohh and Best Buy had PS3s for like about $400.....

Not! :D

Do you know the real reason why Black Friday is called "Black Friday"?

And no, it was not titled this way by the poor people behind the registers

For me, it's Strep Friday. I hate being sick.

If I recall, it has something to do with money. The US issued large amounts of money backed by nothing but credit. Some folks bought lots of gold or something?

Accounting practice

One theory is that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the holiday season. When this would be recorded in the financial records, common accounting practices use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink would show positive amounts. Black Friday is the beginning of the period where they would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black).

Earliest Citation, speaking to the Friday after Thanksgiving:

A BLACK FRIDAY.
There have been many Black Fridays in recent history. Most of them have been days of financial panic. There has been none of blacker foreboding than last Friday. And the blackness is not loss or fear of loss in stocks and bonds.

It's the infamous day of the year when there's great deals on everything. Stores usually open up at 5 AM, and everything is hectic.

Hectic is a strong term. That is more suited for Dec. 20th. Chaos is the word for Dec. 23-24th.

What about the day AFTER Christmas? Now that is hell.

Also some stores have opened as early as 3-4am in the morning.

Ciao!

Think Boxing day. I know people who are outside clothes stores by 8am on Boxing day.

Oh God. I know what you guys mean now.
Christmas Eve and Boxing day *shudder*

I've heard reports that there were like 200-300 people lined up outside of Best Buy and Circuit City and such at like 2-4am to get some great deals. CC apparently had a free 3.2mpixel camera with any purchase over $250, and BB had some TV's marked down by like $500, even $1000 in some cases. I know someone who got an LCD HDTV 42" by Polaroid (720p) for like $950.

I went to Best Buy.. scored a few gifts, mostly DVD's and a 1 gig flash drive that I really needed for 15 bucks. Had to wake up at 3:30 AM to get there in time though..

Dude, 35 hundred dollar HDTVs were sold for like about a grand. It was complete madness. I heard in the news NYC had the best deals in the tri-state area. $800 desktop computers were sold at $185, and there wasn't any kind of rebate or "with the purchase of $500 or more", you got what you saw.

I've seen the wikipedia quote but can I still ask, why?

Boxing Day (Dec 26th) has a reason because it's the day after Xmas, and stores want to shift their Xmas stock and everyone to spend their Xmas bonuses/gift money.

Dec. 26th is the worst shopping day of the year. People are wanting to use their Christmas money, return items, etc.

I usually wait until the 27th or 28th to spend my monies.

Well, I went to Best Buy at 3:50 AM here, and about 250 people were already waiting. Apparently the first guy in line got their about 8 to 9 PM, Thursday night. Mind you, it started snowing over the night and crazy winds. Probably dropped to like 20 degrees F over the night. I didn't get into the store till about 5:30 AM, and they were sold on the laptop I wanted. It was a decent Toshiba for $250.

Ended up going over to Staples though and snagged a few good deals. I lined up 10 minutes before they opened and was like 30-40th in line. Got the big things I wanted.

20 inch Widescreen LCD, Samsung for $180 US
1 gb Sandisk Cruzer micro for $8
200 Gb Maxtor Internal HDD for $20

They had some other good deals, like a Super G router for $20 and such. But I didn't really have the money, and it took me a full hour to get out of Staples. Got into the store at 6 AM and got out a little at 7 AM. I snagged one of their rolling office chairs and just kinda rolled my way down the line to the registers.

So I am NEVER ever again trying to get into Best Buy when they open on Black Friday, I'll just swing by at like 11 AM to see whats left over. From now on, its Staples for me.

And yeah, its crazy chaotic. The parking lot was a death trap as well.

I work in retail at a clothing store here in the United States called Steve and Barry's University Sportswear. For the most part we are known as a quasi-Walmart and Old Navy competitor in clothing sales, particularly that of collegiate sportswear and our new Stephon Marbury sportswear lineup.

To be completely honest, "Black Friday" was awfully slow today. We didn't even hit our sales target, and it was a fairly reasonable one if I recall. Sure, we pulled down great sales numbers, but we were still behind last year's figures.

...Generally speaking, I stay away from the sales. A few of my friends went shopping and waited for hours to save some money on iPods or something at Meijer, but to me it isn't worth it. I already work in retail, and I don't want to have to deal with more people when I know I will have to do it later...

The wife left around 4:35AM as I just went to bed. lol She met my sister at some restaurant for coffee and breakfast, and went to all sorts of stores opening at 5:AM.

She just got back about 15 minutes ago. So, from 4:35AM to 8:05PM shopping. With my sister. Presents are at grandma's being wrapped as we speak, er... uh... type.
