The car seems a bit over priced to me. I like how they compared it on Top Gear (last season?) where they said you should just go buy a VW R32 which is around the same price and has a bit more room.

But looking at a lot of the Top Gear reviews, they seem to be a little biased toward the VW side of things. They took the GTI over the more powerful Astra VXR and Renault Megane thingy. They would also take the GTI over the much faster Civic R. As much as I agree with their conclusions, I would question their validity.

That is ignoring there reasoning. Case in point, the Astra VXR understeered more than a 1970s Cadillac and was really no faster than the Golf because of it (if I recall correctly, it was actually slower around the track). And I'm pretty sure the Megane lost out to the Golf because the Golf is a better place to be inside (though don't quote me on that).

Not only is the GTi actually the faster of the two, both in normal acceleration and no doubt in day to day use, but the Euro Type R hardly has a unanimous lead over the GTi by any form of the European press, if I recall correctly.

Even as a "GM Guy" under most circumstances, its easily identifiable as to why the GTI is superior; Cheap price, excellent dynamics, and an overall "grown-up" attitude that makes the whole family happy. Sure, I love my Astra VXR for its outrageousness (God I hope we get it here!), but I'd still choose a GTI in the end.

The strength of any VW over most of its competition simply is that it is cheap, refined, and normally does a damn good job at just about everything. It doesn't mean that it does everything perfectly, but a good job nevertheless.

Astra.....At the end of the day its a vauxhall, a bit ricer styled and isnt too good at putting the power down.

Type R - Its not faster than the GTI. The old ones was probably more fun to drive but the new one seems to be rather rubbish.

Renault - Its french and it will break. Know of a guy with a 182 clio which has been sitting in a renault garage undrivable for over a year because renault seem unable to source it a new wiring loom. Lawsuits are following
