As it said in the article posted above , its an engineering concept and not a desgin concept , the 2 new models coming in 2007 (RFK and the otehr thing) are going define the next style BMW is going........

Do the headlights scream Ford Focus for anyone else??

I don't like the thing. Too sharp and angular, with a squashed hindquarters.

Now I know what the car reminds me of...

The front looks like the Happy Cat...

Bangle once defended his work by saying that he and his team were "leading the way in automotive design." If so, then why does the Z29 look like something Mazda and Audi would build if they worked together? :indiff:

This car is pretty cool, but is it neccesary(bad spelling) this cuts into the niche the z4 already has

Not quite. A relatively-affordable Miata-fighter the Z4 is not.

Yes, I realize this, but who said that it would be affordable? Also, what if the engine is the same as the Z4 with a compareable cabin size, show me specs and i will believe!:)

well, i think its beautiful, its so much different looking than any other bmw's out there now, but i love the look of it...

BMW are doing a 1 series convertiable the are not going to produce this car , and there is a 2 dr one series coming along too

Well, I think that the 1 sieries convertible will be marketet as a Z29 in most markets where there is no BMW 1-sieries

I actually think it's a very nice looking car. But then again, I tend to like a Bangle designs anyway...

Meh, its allright. Nothing too special, nothing to make me say "I have to have one!"

GOOD GOD, That thing is HIDEOUS! Is that the car or is the yellow artist's impression the car? They don't even look similar. Those pictures are of a car with distorted, sharp, disgusting lines, and the impression looks like a natural beast.

I declare shenanigans!

The general proportions and design of the car are quite beautiful. It's the headlights and tail-lights that look like a tacked-on disguise they use for road-test units.

3-Wheel Drive
Not even Doom music could justify this car.

You're the man now dog! Punch the keys for God's sake and write a letter to BMW to stop making ugly cars. They can kiss my tra-la-la is they build this car. Of course, they will probably tell us it would be like the Jell-o pudding pop, no wait, Kodak film, no, the New Coke... Cause it will be around forever... Then we can place the King outside of their door, while Nicholas Cage gets inside of their factory and bakes a cake with Stephanie. That way we can prove that they have the manners of a goat, and then can escape, presumming of course the ***** didn't steal our bike.

BTW: Did I mention our safety isn't guaranteed?

I've noticed something about car designs that seems to be quite consistent. The angle of the A-pillar is extremely important in "beauty".

View the car in profile. Draw an imaginary line from the top of the A-pillar to the bottom of the A-pillar, and continue straight through to the bottom of the car. If that line intersects the front axle, the car is generally accepted, but usually not considered avant-garde or daring, or anything like that. If the line falls short, between the front & rear axle, opinion is very polarized, and usually negative (at least at first). If the line actually lines up ahead of the fron axle, the car is a Pagani. ;) Well, actually it's also very polarizing, but usually positive, and usually a supercar of some sort.

This car's A-line falls way short of the front axle, and seems to be unanimously ugly. Partially because the combination of detailing (lights) would make Mitsubishi concept cars shudder with revulsion. But it's also due to the proportions, which are so far out of whack, it's browsing eBay for deals on used Whack(c).

Hmm harry turtle has made a good point there. I didnt really notice this before but now i do. Cars with the extended lines in front of the front axle are indeed beautiful aka zonda, F40 etc. Cars with the line behind the front axle are ugly like this fugly bmw and the SLR. Whats different with the SLR is that it loooks quite good from some angles. This loosk bad from all angles

Lookswise, I would go with the Miata 7 out of 10 times. The controversial designs of American Chris Bangle really came through with this one. I don't know. It seems like there aren't as many stylish small sports cars. BMW probably should have taken the Z4 (a much more handsome car) and make it shorter in all three dimensions. The styling of this car (or the lack thereof) seems to be off in a number of different areas. I liked the Z4 better with its styling. Yet there remains a certain Law of Automobiles that seems to be present:

1.) A car that I think isn't lovely ends up being a hit with people.
2.) A car that I think is lovely ends up being a flop with people.

I don't want to discredit the Miata/MX-5 and S2000 with a car like this. I'm not the one who slams Japanese cars all the time. BMW knows the sports car and sports sedan business. They've known it for as long as they've been established. Since this is a BMW, I'm pretty sure that anything less than the car being agile and capable is simmply un-BMW. The car could have been designed better. I feel the same way about this car as I feel about the Corvette C6, only that this thing needs more of a makeover. Hopefully, the handling and performance will make future owners forget all about the cars' looks up front and even on the sides. So out of 100% approval, this Z2 is getting 65% love from me.

It's not a tried-and-true rule, and I didn't mean that the cars were flat out ugly but that they often were subject to very polarized opinions (BMW Z4 in particular). And it only seems to apply to modern cars. Most cars from before 1970 had very upright windscreens, so their A-pillar was almost vertical, too. But that didn't stop anyone from enjoying the heck out of the 1959 Eldorado. 👍

It all has to do with proportions, and what the human eye generally enjoys seeing. Golden rule, golden section, etc.. I'm so poorly read on this stuff.

The thing is: ugly sells. Not plain jane ugly, like you see on many cheap sales flops, but spectacularly ugly, outrageously ugly.

Cars that defy aesthetic convention often strike a chord with people, as long as they defy the right aesthetic conventions (hence, the Aztek flop). As one designer once noted, more people would buy a car based on unusual looks than those who would not buy said car.

The Aztek failed to sell because it was a horrible car. The Chinese cars are suffering the same fate outside of China: ugly and lousy equals no sales.

But, again, the point that I'm making is that the cars are not out-and-out ugly. It's that there are very split opinions about the cars' appearance. The further the A-pillar strays from the front axle, the stronger opinions get (positive or negative). Cars with A-pillars dead on the front axle tend to have unenthusiastic reviews (positive or negative).
