It's a '56 and was imported from Austria in '65. It doesn't run as it sat in a garage for 37 years and it'll probably be a while before it does but just sitting inside it puts a grin on my face.

Make it a track machine! I remember a year at Limerock where a Fiat 500 was beating mutangs and such. I can imagine that bug doing that.

Thanks, I plan on getting it on the road, later suspension and motor swap. This thing is full of rare parts, I was told the clock and grill are worth $800, that's a welder for me!

You have good taste in cars. I was clicking on the thread expecting something like an AE86.

Throw a Subaru engine in there after you've repaired the chassis enough to handle the power without snapping in two. It's unoriginal, but damn effective.

The engine is 1.2L and actually produces 34bhp. 0-60 around 33 seconds and 1/4 mile in 25 seconds, top speed of 68mph new. it wil be a mad sikkkk streetz racer yo. I'd love to do a Subaru engine swap but it requires lots of cutting up the body for engine fitment and the radiator. You also have to run the radiator hoses under the chassis or cut through the body and run it in there and build a shield in case it pops. I like my beetles to be either so low they capsize when driven over nickles or some off-road tires having fun in the rough.

Congrats on your purchase El Jarretto. Guess we have the same passion for the Beetle. I was thinking of buying a late 60's Beetle and do a Subaru engine swap as well! From the looks of it, the car is really rusted out. Yeah, this is gonna be a fun project.....

i fully agree......for us subaru people, it would be like taking a 22B and pitting in a chevy small block....with something that rare, you just DONT do it....

just refurb it to stock and be proud of it. you will get ALOT of respect for preserving a rare piece of history rather than modifying it beyond recognition like what has happened to far too many rare cars. 👍

The only thing I would consider modifying on a car like that is the safety things. I have to imagine it only have lap seat belts. Other then that restoring it back to the way it was back in the 50's is the way to go.

Ouch. That is a ROUGH floorpan. those are the worst things on those cars, usually rust to hell.

But, hell, It's an aircooled. As old as it is, I'd just go Cal Look on it, if modifying it.
