I know from past discusions (like this one) that some people including me had problems with that indicator. It can now be disabled!

When racing: Start>Quick Options>toggle "Suggested Gear"

The indicator won't blink anymore when approaching corners.

This can be accessed from Options>"Race Display Options" as well.

Other HUD elements can be disabled too.

Yep, just saw this in game. Yup you can disable huge list of names on the right.

I'm pretty sure you can turn all heads up displays off with the start > options thing, you can turn just one thing or another, or all of it off, I've done it before but I can't remember the exact process of doing it

Edit: a little late i suppose

That's one small step for PD, one giant leap for mankind :)

my laptimes are much more better without that indicator...

Oh wow! Really? I never knew it hindered laptimes.

Oh wow! Really? I never knew it hindered laptimes.

It suggests braking and gear selections that are not always optimum. Its like using the racing line aid - it will never show you the fastest way.
Its much better and consistent to learn your braking points using landmarks at the track.

I am so happy at this change! I've been wanting this kind of option for years in all kinds of games. Now if only Battlefield could have an option to turn off all the useless "XP" information too...the HUDs for games these days are far too cluttered with useless information sometimes.

Ever since it was pointed out to me what the flashing gear indicator meant, its been pretty difficult to ignore it when braking for corners, especially when you first learn tracks or cars. Now I can finally have a pure learning/driving experience without the distracting red light!

This was my explanation for not wanting it in the other old closed thread regarding this:

I really wish PD offered an option to remove the blinking indicator as I find it prevents me from correctly learning braking distances and memorizing braking reference points. Since it blinks, it's very hard to not notice it and unconsciously I end up most of the time waiting for it before starting to brake.

It doesn't need to be enforceable on/off, just optional like the map view.

By the way, together with the online "No ABS restriction" that has been added in 2.02 as well, this might make me play GT5 again.

Huh, even though i never realised it, before the thread was mentione above sometime ago, and realised it was there, i still avoided it easily, i never paid attention to it, ever! Even the gear indicator, the only thing i ever looked at was the speed, so i could see if i was at the limit. It seems kind of weird, as someone who knows it will hinder there laps, keep looking at it, and keeping using that marker.

It seems like you got your wish.

To those who think it has no effect on their driving, I suggest to disable it for a while. You might be surprised on how it helped you judge braking distances/points. In my case I almost have to re-learn every track, even though I wasn't actively looking at the indicator.

I would call it a driving aid. It has that much effect.

This! I was saying to my self why the hell do I keep crashing.

I love this option. I always liked to drive without it even though I am a lot slower without it. I tried not to look at it but without realising you could see the red flashes. It annoyed me that I couldn't see my laptimes or how much I was behind/ in front. Now I can learn how to drive properly! Already crashed in the final chicane of Spa :P

I'm shocked that I was relying on it more than I actually thought. I keep crashing everywhere too, without it. I'm not sure if PD realizes how helpful this is (more than "regular" driving aids!). As far as I remember they introduced this feature in GT3.

Great, they finally give us this option, but we should be able to create rooms with forced brake indicator OFF too, is that possible?!?

No, because it's not a driving aid, at least officially. It's a now toggable HUD option.
In my opinion it should be a driving aid. It has huge impact on driving, more than the racing line, for example.

I agree this is one of the best changes in the game, I tried hard to ignore that indicator but it still affected my driving. I say that because since I turned it off I have missed more than a few braking points. It was especially galling since the Spec 2 update where they added it to the Karts.

I only wish I could have speedo and tach while disabling the fuel consumption and tires indicator. Even better would be an option to hide everything you want hidden but being able to toggle it on/off via button push.

I know MOST of the tracks really well and have this look ahead mentality while handling what's at foot (or tires)

I've noticed that I was instantly faster because that indicator distracted me and caused me to brake a little earlier than I should have in past. I LOVE IT TURNED OFF now.

I noticed it on Nurburgring because I had it off and I was going REALLY hot through a turn that I was normally slower and i was thinking "damn this car is quick" then I was looking for it to turn on in another spot of track and it didn't and it finally clicked in my head how much I was using it for a warning or reminder instead of just using my eyes and brain for that. I really like it off!!

Same here... I found myself missing 80% of the braking points... it really has a huge impact on driving.

It looks like it had the opposite effect on you. This might have something to do with the driving style. Maybe screen size has also an effect. On big screens where you have a greater sense of immertion it might be less noticeable. Also, on Premium cars in the cockpit view the blinking indicator is tucked away on the bottom right of the screen, while on standard ones it's always on the middle of the screen.

Personally I tend to drive conservatively. I don't use the ABS. I have a small screen and so far I've mostly used standard cars in the mid-to-low PP range with preferably comfort tires or sports hard tires.

I've got pretty fair peripheral vision and that indicator was always messing with my head even when I was trying to block it out. it was making me brake and turn in way too soon.

Yeah for competitive racing I like to go with cars like you said OR SHUFFLE RACING with no abs. I like the realism.

100% agree with you. Lets see if PD can act on this it would be very appreciated.

Interesting comments, I race with no HUD premium or standards from the very first we could disable it. I never thought the gear indicator could be so helpful. Furthermore I am used to shift gears just by the engine sound (although I reach revs limiter sometimes or shift sooner than I should). To me no HUD puts me totally behind the wheel. Try it you will not regret it.

What helps (many?) people so much isn't the "suggested gear" function of that indicator (I think most people shift by ear to some extent), but rather that it blinks just before the optimal braking points. It's like having somebody who shouts you to brake each time. You can't help but notice it if you aren't deeply immersed in your driving. As a result, even if you don't want to, your brain trains to wait for the indicator to blink before starting to brake.

Personally I never wanted to get completely rid of the HUD, so this new option to remove portions of it has been the first chance for me to try driving without the suggested gear indicator.

I changed "aren't" to "are" above. But that statement is totally what was happening to me.

lol, me too!

I was doing Spa & at time's I was waiting for the indicator to come on, then I realized I turned it off, I locked up the wheel's a couple times or I used my brakes to soon.

Totally agree with your post but this. The blinking gear before the optimal braking point for the game (the way it was programmed) because I am sure our driving styles are different on how we approach to a corner, that is why I agree that for some may be a driving aid but for others a total misjudge on the braking point. As I decided time ago not to use the HUD whatsoever I could concentrate on my own braking points hence developing my own driving style (for good or not, well, honestly, I do not know) but at least I feel totally inmersed with no external 'distractions'. For sure just this little thing will bring quite a big impact on many players.
