If only Mike Ashley felt as uncomfortable when he was being grilled last week.

Clement Freud is the latest name to be dragged through Operation Nonce. :indiff:

... and now being circumstantially linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann! Though the most reputable source I saw for that was the Daily Fail.

I've just seen that speculation here, in your post.
I know that for commentary's sake, these things have to be mentioned & I'm not blaming you at all. However, if there is some dubious news going around then it's a touch unfortunate that the dubious news itself is spread in such a way. I know it's inevitable, just worth mentioning.

I agree, trial by media is unfortunate enough as it is. But, it's such a bizarre twist to both News stories, hence I was careful to use the words 'circumstantially linked'.

Freud's family and representatives acknowledge that he did indeed have a villa in Praia de Luz at the time McCann went missing and that he became friends with the McCanns in the time afterwards. He was not, we're told, in Portugal at the time of the disappearance.

I only labelled it as "dubious news" because you used terms that were careful to label it as such. I haven't read into the story myself yet.

Labour MP shot by man in Leeds.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36550304

A 52 year old man has been arrested and witnesses are claiming he shouted "Britain First" during the attack.

Weird, I thought I'd already posted that here a little earlier.

Reports are that she is still critically ill, sounds horrific. This from an eyewitness;

BBC
I could hear a loud popping noise that sounded like a balloon burst - a loud balloon - and when I looked round there's a man stood there in his 50s with a white baseball cap on and a jacket with a gun, an old fashioned looking gun in his hand, and he shot this lady once and then he shot her again, she fell to the floor, lent over shot her once more in the face area.

Britain First are apparently saying this man was "clearly" not representative of them. However you slice it, this is apparently a white, domestic criminal with an attempted murder on a pro-immigration MP. The problems at home are seldom addressed by people or groups who are so anti-immigration and I will be quite interested to see what the reaction to this is.

I dearly hope Jo Cox is able to pull through. This is a simply disgusting turn of events.

Having read a fair bit of the kind of posts BF supporters make I can quite comfortably say that this kind of thing is representative of the kind of threats they make on an almost daily basis.

FBN in the US is saying both stay and leave campaigns have shut down in light of the shooting. It is being interpreted as a political murder with the net benefit going to the stay side.

This is terrible news, these things just don't happen here. I was hoping that she would pull through. What I really want to know now is motive, pure and simple. This is could have a massive effect on the referendum outcome. They may even postpone the voting date. This reminds me of the shooting in the US of house representative Gabrielle Giffords.

To think this was going on whilst everyone was enjoying the match :(

3 close range shots, the third being fired to the head with her already down, plus stabbing, plus kicking the body after it all doesn't leave survival chances.

Everything about it is horrible. this crime has HATE written all over.

She was part of the 'IN' flotilla yesterday...

Funny how one day you can be on the Thames with your loved ones and the next day your gone...

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. She was my local MP. I'd met her twice and each time she was so incredibly warm and charming. So utterly, absolutely committed to being a voice for our little community. I think you know when you talk to someone, particularly on the campaign trail, whether they're genuine or not. What I got from Jo was that she was 100% about us. An activist. A mother. A voice for us. I don't tend to get into politics too much because I tend to be sceptical of people, but Jo was different. I was very proud to have her represent me.

I don't even know how to process this, it's just heartbreaking. I feel like I'm going to be sick. She has a young family too. I just... I can't.

Edit: Statement from Brendan, Jo's husband.

Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo’s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.

She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate doesn’t have a creed, race or religion, it is poisionous.

Jo would have no regrets about her life, she lived every day of it to the full.

Both very sad :(

Like @Danny its shocking and sad to see a local MP be attacked like this. I live not far from Birstall.

Truly a sad day for Yorkshire and the UK at large.

So now I'm seeing tweets from the far right claiming it's actually a left wing false flag.

Seriously poor taste.

And of course Nick Griffin is using the shooting as a political points-scoring exercise. That man is beneath contempt.

Just spoken to my mother about this whole event because I need to get it out of my system otherwise I'll never stop crying. She told me about how in February, Jo came to her school to talk to the kids in her class. She did almost a full day with them with exercises and activities focused around being proud of yourself and having dreams. She told them that hers had been to represent where she was born and grew up, in parliament. She went on to say that she did it, and was proof that you can achieve your dreams with hard work. I mean, that's gold for a class of 6 year olds. Who goes out of their way for kids like that after already securing a political post? Just a thoroughly good woman and a great, great loss. Well-meaning politicians seem like a rare commodity.
