Shame really as next think we'll see hacked cars and the whole thing will go a bit 'Modern Warfare'.

Lets hope Sony does something about it in the next patch.

can someone explain why this is a problem?

Well I don't like when some gamers crack/copy games, but it's still the same game. They have the same cars/tracks and the same physics, so what's the problem?

People will be able to edit the data, hence potentially cheat.

or make the game better with mods?

Doubtful

More likely cheat. Haha. Most people into that kind of a thing I'd expect would cheat, rather than do some good mods.

Yep they will cheat. Mods are done on a PC community where the game is more easily accessible to the users to change/modify. The fact you'd have to hack your PS3 to be able to do anything would likely knock out the chances for Mods and instead just make it cheater heaven.

lol, well if you suspect that may be the case, and you feel that somebody else has an advantage over you, then go and find a new room :)

I could understand everyone getting upset by this IF all of the good cars where of a limited number and say 6 million people had 4 million Jag XJ-13's to try and win, and somebody cheats and gets one and you lose and dont get one, but there are unlimited cars in the game, so whats the problem.

In my opinion, if somebody is clever enough to be able to modify GT5 to improve it, to alter a cars performance or anything like that, well, good luck to them, if they have learned how to do such a thing then go for it, maybe if they can improve GT5 we should be asking them to make GT6 instead :P

From what Ive read they are having trouble just running version 1.00 and cant patch to 1.05 let alone cheat or mod....
I think youre over reacting...

WHAT!!! they have cracked the PS3 games too.
Bloody hell That was always the problem with PC racing games always to many bloody cheats editing the files its a joke.
I hope all you cheats all burn in HELL quite frankly, I have lost count of the amount of times we have been having a really good race on the PC and a load of cheats come along and mess it all up.
I just cant see the point of it at all I hope PD fixes this.

Perhaps if they do unlock the game they might find some of the things that have gone missing like the better damage modelling and the siena kart track. Maybe there are some hidden cars that have been ported from GT3 and GT4 (Auto union streamliner, Black Lmp Cars, Benz + Daimler cars, Hidden Porsche from GT3)

Edit: Just a thought but if modders get hold of it what about a go-kart with the horsepower and downforce of the X2010?

Because if you're a freeloader who hasn't spent any money on the game anyway, you're probably less devoted to learning it and playing it properly. Hence, the chances of punk-kids online just dicking around spoiling it for those who want to enjoy it the way it should grow exponentially.

In short: it'll be a whole lot more difficult to find a nice, clean race with mature drivers online.

I hope Sony/PD bans the freeloaders off the net swiftly.

Agreed,

Let the people who pay, play online. Those that dont, offline.

I doubt it.
If Sony/PD fixes the problem, it will be in a game or system update. Without both, people will not be able to sign into the Playstation Network.

Also with the above post about it not working with the 1.05 update, they won't be able to go online anyway without that, it version checks if you try.

They cant play online from what Ive read
And will never be able to mod it - PS2 games where hack long ago and nobody was able to mod any PS2 game

Well actually, as I understand it, they hacked Sony's root key. That means 3rd parties can create and modify code (and the kernel even) and pretend it's actually signed by Sony. Sony can invalidate the old key, but the old key is written in hardware in the current generation of PS3s, it's not software/firmware updatable (as was explained to me anyway). That means they can't invalidate it without screwing over every PS3 owner there is today. This is a serious problem for Sony.

The current way the PS3 has been hacked basically means that Sony can not do anything about it. It is hacked in a way more thoroughly than the PSP or Wii ever were.

They can't play it online and probably never will, but there were several PS2 games that were hacked/modded in various ways. GT4 was one of them.

In all fairness though that would be hilarious!

Yes it would... the first time. Cheating is only fun as a novelty. Once it becomes common practice, it gets annoying fast.

Anyone ever play Borderlands? Yup.

Borderlands, fun game with friends... Not so fun with strangers. I remember one time trying to take that big Worm, Crawmerax, down and this soldier runs up and slap it...

Well as long they can't get online, I wouldn't worry.

Check the modders forum on this website for GT4. Someone had a 800hp Civic if i remember correctly and they had to put the tracking from a racecar on it to keep it stable, so the wheels were sticking out of the body.

You can see what's in the game if you read the eboot file on the disc with an hex editor.

What other cars have the drivers got clear visors? This is the only one I've seen where you can see the drivers eyes moving:

I don't think it's a problem to find good racers. There are several hundreds of honourable players here. Go to the online racing subforum and invite people to your race. Of course you can't fill up a racing room in the beginning, but over time you will get to know good drivers and the number of them you know will increase. In COD I barley play with any strangers in my team because there are always 20-30 players online I like playing with, so what's the deal? I can't imagine anything that will stop you from "collecting" psn friends which are good drivers and where you know if they bump into you that was not on purpose. Accidents even happen in the F1, remember the accident between vettel and webber.

I'll leave it to someone else to furnish you with the details but it suffices to say that it's going to be more complicated to detect these PS3s online.

The technology revealed at the conference suggests a 'straight to the metal' software-assisted hack that allows a pseudo-dev to 'sign' code as genuine.

That would mean the ability (with additional technologies applied) to run hacked/modified/new code as genuine. The obvious answer is for PSN to apply some kind of checksum handshake but that would certainly not be a quick roll-out and could possibly even be trapped by clever coders!
