can someone explain why this is a problem?
Well I don't like when some gamers crack/copy games, but it's still the same game. They have the same cars/tracks and the same physics, so what's the problem?
or make the game better with mods?

More likely cheat. Haha. Most people into that kind of a thing I'd expect would cheat, rather than do some good mods.
Just image the day when the race car you have spent months optimising gets overtaken by a honda civic doing 350mph.
I think youre over reacting...

Because if you're a freeloader who hasn't spent any money on the game anyway, you're probably less devoted to learning it and playing it properly. Hence, the chances of punk-kids online just dicking around spoiling it for those who want to enjoy it the way it should grow exponentially.
In short: it'll be a whole lot more difficult to find a nice, clean race with mature drivers online.
I hope Sony/PD bans the freeloaders off the net swiftly.
Can they actually go online with the hacked console?
I doubt it.
If Sony/PD fixes the problem, it will be in a game or system update. Without both, people will not be able to sign into the Playstation Network.
Well actually, as I understand it, they hacked Sony's root key. That means 3rd parties can create and modify code (and the kernel even) and pretend it's actually signed by Sony. Sony can invalidate the old key, but the old key is written in hardware in the current generation of PS3s, it's not software/firmware updatable (as was explained to me anyway). That means they can't invalidate it without screwing over every PS3 owner there is today. This is a serious problem for Sony.If Sony/PD fixes the problem, it will be in a game or system update. Without both, people will not be able to sign into the Playstation Network.
They can't play it online and probably never will, but there were several PS2 games that were hacked/modded in various ways. GT4 was one of them. They cant play online from what Ive read
And will never be able to mod it - PS2 games where hack long ago and nobody was able to mod any PS2 game
In all fairness though that would be hilarious!
Yes it would... the first time. Cheating is only fun as a novelty. Once it becomes common practice, it gets annoying fast.
Anyone ever play Borderlands? Yup.

Perhaps if they do unlock the game they might find some of the things that have gone missing like the better damage modelling and the siena kart track. Maybe there are some hidden cars that have been ported from GT3 and GT4 (Auto union streamliner, Black Lmp Cars, Benz + Daimler cars, Hidden Porsche from GT3)
Edit: Just a thought but if modders get hold of it what about a go-kart with the horsepower and downforce of the X2010?
