Okay, so you would rather we had yet another game based on past conflicts? True there are hundreds of sci-fi shooters out there, but only a few are worth playing. Same goes for WW2 shooters.
And that is why the CoD series never interested me prior the MW2 (I'm also new to shooters, but BC2 & MW2 got me to try, now I'm in CoD4). I enjoyed "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers ("The Pacific not so much)" as much as the next guy. I'm the son of a WW2 combat Vet and buy into the "greatest generation" thing. However I have no huge WW2 nostalgia. So I agree that is a well taped area for concepts.
At least Vietnam is new ground.
I am interested in the American Revolution and have a handful of American Civil War historians in my family. Would I like to see a game based on either conflict? Not really (Red Dead Redemption is pushing it with some-what period firearm joy, the game design itself makes up for that). Plus battle was a vet different thing then (pre WW1, big strategic battle best simulated by strategy sims).
Point is this. I like stuff set in present day. Given the nature of conflict in 2010, The types of arms we have, The complexity of the environments needed, etc etc is more than enough for compelling games.
But I do understand Treyarch wanting to stamp a new feel on the CoD series given they are know for their WW2 stuff and the void opened up post IW implosion.
I'm still very much looking forward to Black Ops. I just hope the M16 isn't again the be-all/end-all (yawn).
