Can NFS Shift fill the void left by GT5 delay?

NFS Shift won't be a match for GT5, but it is a far, far better sim/game than GT4.

I enjoyed GT4 way more than NFSS. I like the physics of GT4 much more (no matter what car you're in in NFSS, you're gonna be all over the place), it had more tracks, better photomode, more cars, more events.

the reviews of shift are encouraging. looks like i am going to nab one soon

If you can, rent it first. It's for your own good.

After putting some time into the demo, no I wont be purchasing Shift, it would last me a couple days and I doubt I would touch it again, so I'm not buying it. Probably will borrow or hire it as we have a good 6 months until GT5.

There's a demo?

Shift doesn't come to the table empty handed, some ideas such as a dynamic cockpit, sound, & uneven road surfaces that unsettle your vehicle if you take them to fast are great ideas that can be incorporated into a game such as GT, that strive to be a simulator.

After playing the game since it's release, I see areas that GT & Forza can approve on. Others areas such as crashes are to common in the game & would take away from the driving aspect of GT. :)

There seem to be a lot of people dismissing Shift out of hand who haven't even tried it for themselves.

Shift does have a couple of major bugs (which hopefully should be fixed relatively soon), but in a lot of ways it recreates the sensations of driving much better than any of the GT series to date. The physics model isn't as detailed or as precise as GT5P, but the way the cars feel is much better... particularly the way the steering gives such a good connection to exactly how the car is behaving under power/brakes/over bumps.

It takes a bit of getting used to after GT5P, but for me (and a lot of people I know - including some of the top drivers from both here and GTRP) it's a fine effort and very enjoyable... driving a Porsche GT3RS round the 'Ring at the limit is utterly superb.

Once you get used to the different feel, on-line is really good... racing your friends in private rooms is great, and the connection is absolutely solid.

Maybe it won't last 6 months, but for me, it's certainly better than yet another 6 months of GT5P.

Its a shame people have ran into so many bugs as i havent ran into any. Its a filler game at the moment but im not sure the online will last me until the middle of next year. But as far as online goes i'm having a great time, theres only been a few races where people blindly switched sides of the track and clipped me. There hasnt been a hint of lag on my end either. Single player is short but i'm spending the time to try and get every star, i need to justify my purchase i guess

I still need to pick up Supercar Challenge but no place in my city seems to have it. Dirt 2, although great with the DFGT, just doesn't satisfy me so i guess i'm stuck with Shift and SCC until then. :scared:

The tracks are fairly new to me so they still have that "getting used to" feel.

I've been playing SHIFT for the last couple of weeks now with a G25 and no driving aids. I will admit, the cars can be difficult to drive, but when you're driving the Tier 4 cars, what do you expect? These are not Honda Civics you know. I expected the Veyron on the Nurburgring to be a bit difficult to handle. :sly:

The only thing right now that is bothering me the bouncing glitch that I've come across. I've so far only encountered it with the Carrera GT at Spa. Turn 2 is damn near impossible to take unless you take it fairly slow. I do like that EA is going to address these issues and release a patch soon.

NFS: SHIFT is a step in the right direction for the series, so we'll see what Criterion Games has to offer next year with their version. (Hot Pursuit III perhaps?)

I will say if you do play this, play it with a steering wheel. I'm seeing lots of vids on youtube and can tell some are playing it with the controller. Get yourself a wheel. You'll thank yourself later. ;)

Can NFS Shift fill the void left by GT5 delay? No.
But by the same token, I for one am now officially "burnt out" with playing GT5P--again. When I first bought Prologue in April of '08, I played it for about a month (offline) and got completely bored to death with it.

Then, I discovered GTPlanet and started playing online for the first time in late March of this year. That was pretty enjoyable for about three or four more months, then the boredom set in again about 2 months ago. If not for online events such as Suzuka 750 PP and 800 PP as well as the Weekly Race Series, I would have again been bored to tears much sooner. Having had my second go-around with Prologue now, I am once again completely and utterly bored by it.

So in essence, Prologue is good for about a month of offline play and about 3 months of online play--for me. I certainly can't speak for anyone else.

Now, let's look at Shift. The majority of people responding to this thread are bludgeoning Shift as though it is a pile of rubbish. Pretty much every review of the game has been positive. Just look at the following list:

Worthplaying.com--8.5/10 http://worthplaying.com/article/2009/9/27/reviews/68823/
IGN--9/10 http://pc.ign.com/articles/102/1023587p4.html
Games radar--9/10 http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/need-for-speed-shift/review/need-for-speed-shift/a-2009091516453418594361/g-200901301742944010
G4TV--5/5 http://g4tv.com/games/ps3/61972/Need-for-Speed-Shift/review

And if that's not enough, just take a look at the poll results in this thread
here at GTPlanet. Approximately 80% of the people who voted in that poll gave Shift a rating between 7 and a 10 out of a possible 10, with about 63% of those voting scoring it between an 8 and 10.

Bottom line: Shift is an excellent game. The offline features should last me about a month (the same as Prologue). It does several things better than Prologue: The sounds are excellent--a noticeable improvement from Prologue, where some of the cars sound like their engine compartment is comprised of a vacuum cleaner or coffee grinder. Cockpit view is better--the best I've seen in a console or PC game to date. Certain elements of the physics are clearly better, such as the sense of weight transfer in the cars, the braking physics and the sense of speed. The online play is better than Prologue. No lag. Customizeable events. Private rooms. The graphics in Prologue are only marginally better than those in Shift.

I just find it shocking that so many people are so dismissive of Shift  If you have actually played the game, and have these opinions, fine. I can't argue with that. But if you are basing your opinions on rumours or youtube videos, then you have no idea what you are talking about.
Also, if you are playing the game with a controller, you are only playing half the game. Sorry, but it's the truth. Play the game with a wheel and see what you think of it then. You can get yourself a good wheel setup for about $60 (DFGT or DFP on eBay + IKEA table or old computer desk at a thrift store, or any other stable mounting solution), and it will increase your enjoyment of driving games by orders of magnitude--one of the best purchases you will ever make. *For comparison, a brand new Dualshock 3 controller costs $50 at Wal-Mart here in the U.S.*

I was planning to get GT5 at the end of this yr, but then I heard it wont come out until next year. Now I think I'm going to get Shift while waiting for GT5. For anyone who is planning to get Shift, Best Buy is having a sale right now and tomorrow, $20 off. That is a tempting deal

With 6 mos of game play time to kill, there's enough time to play all the games mentioned, and still probably come up short.

I think Shift definitely has what it takes to occupy people until the release of GT5. I find that this is actually the only NFS game to date that I've played that takes more than two weeks to finish! In the mission of trying to get all the badges it will be a very enjoyable challenge.

I've driven most of the cars in NFS Shift and little feels out of place. I read about some saying they can't control the cars, but if anything they're too easy.

My problem is with the AI, not the physics.

I actually have zero interest in the career modes of any driving game, I just want to buy/unlock the best cars and hot lap them, with the odd single race.

NFS: Shift will not hold me over until March. My play time on the game has already tapered off. Luckily, Modern Warefare 2 is coming soon :)

I've tried to that, play Shift to fill the void and it was fun for awhile but I'm back to playing GT5P again. When GTPSP comes out I'll be playing that also, being able to unlock car's in the PSP ver and transfer them to GT5, awesome!

After playing the demo I think Shift will definitely fill the void especially on PC where it can be tweaked with mods.

It's crazy to call this game arcadey when there is a pure GTR sim engine undernearth.

And behold the graphics on PC. This is a real screenshot (not mine).

If I had a PC good enough to run Shift I would most likely keep playing. Hands down it's the best version compared to the console version.

I played the demo on PC. I have a pretty high spec PC. It feels really good at max settings, high smooth fps and sharp edges all make it a better experience.
I have it on console though to play with my friends who dont spend money on PC :)

It will kill time, thats about it, however if you want a good race experience and you have a decent PC, try GTR2, you can mod it all kinds of ways, new reflections, circuits, cars new and old, skins. And they have Online.

After spending a few days with NFS Shift, my impression is they mispelled the last name. They should have left out the the "f".

I would rate it as amoung the worst racing games I've ever played.

If you haven't played it yet, don't bother.

Its full of glitches and the worst handling physics imaginable.

Race cars with enough down-force to drive upside down at 60 miles an hour, bounce down the track like a basketball.

The sad thing is with some additional programming attention I think it could be a pretty game.

It's typical EA crap, all hype and no delivery.

Oops
