Can someone explain the MLP phenomenon in a civilized manner?

Seriously? It seems that everywhere I turn it is Pony-this and Bronie-that. I must be missing something here because I am completely lost.

A lot of people like the new show due to the way it's made. It's still 'cutesy' but it also has some good humour in there. Silly stuff that makes for a lot of memes. Because it annoys a lot of people it just keeps growing in popularity! If people ignore it, it'll eventually go away. I've seen a few episodes myself though, and I enjoyed them!

For me, it's just a trend or fad or something, anyone who wants to get in the bandwagon, or join the herd, are automatically considered bronies I guess.

I find the series too childish for my taste. Maybe because I prefer animes and stuff, but eh.

Civilized? That's tough (considering I founded GTPlanet's ANTI-MLP group). Its adults (and some teenagers) watching a kids show and almost taking it religiously in certain instances. Especially the ones with the pony avatars, and signatures. Its downright insane and just plain crazy. That civil enough?

You are over dedicated to the anti-brony movement(almost religious) at one point had an anti-brony avatar on GTP and currently have an anti-brony sig.

Honestly SGTR I don't want this whole argument to happen on FPlanet.net too. What part of avatars and signatures is crazy? The only reason that people hate on the show is because 'it's too girly'. You don't need to watch it and I don't see what part of liking a cartoon is insane or crazy. And I especially don't take kindly to someone saying that when it's something that I enjoy doing.

@Apokalypse: Let me word my case differently. Grown adults mainly male, watching a child's show whose target audience is little girls, and then talking on a forum about their love for the show, a pic of their favourite pony doesn't seem weird to you in any way? I know starting an anti-group isn't normal, I'll admit that. But come on, you don't realize what you are doing, you're just following the footsteps of others, while trying to be different.

Their target is little girls? As far as I can tell, and it certainly explains the fandom, the producers have repeatedly stated that their only target is themselves. The effort and actual, tangible care that not only the show shows, but the fans themselves show. I've seen written masterpieces that more than compete with any best-seller out there. I've seen pictures drawn with a magnificence that only true, unbridled, (pun not intended) sheer inspiration can create.

It's not really the fact that they're ponies that gets me. It's their personalities that attract my attention. It's the show's creators that attract me by proving how much they care over and over again. It's the fans themselves that show that it doesn't matter if it's adorable pastel ponies, they will take a great medium and make it the best it can be in their own way.

I'm writing a story right now. It's all about ponies in a post-apocalyptic rebuilt society, but every piece has been inspired by something that we bronies have created, and it's entirely thanks to them that I have not only improved my writing despite moving to Germany, but have let me spin an story on a scale I could never hope to achieve before.

So before you knock us for our 'senseless behavior', I'd like for you to understand what this actually means to us. It's more than ponies, and always has been. If you refuse to understand that, there's little we can do except love and tolerate you with the life lessons we've learned.

I don't care who, nor do I care why, but this thread will not spiral into senseless bickering and belittling statements over a cartoon. It isn't being tolerated at GTP, and it won't be tolerated here either.

I'm way too old to be watching this kind of stuff now. But back when it looked like this I didn't watch it then either. I don't think any boys admitted to doing that. judging from this thread it seems like times have changed.

Times have changed, but that's not the reason there are so many Bronies. The show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is nothing like the pony cartoons of old. Actually, many Bronies, like me, dislike the older generations and some, unfortunately, go as far as actively hating on them.


And it's the show that gets us in, but it's the community that keeps us there.

We've got quality content like this...

...being rolled out at an insane pace.

Along with original music, remixes/covers of the shows music, movie/game trailers dubbed over ponies,

, staggering amounts of quality art, flash animations, game mods, custom figures and plushies.....the list of things this community is turning out can just keep going.


It's the kind of community that keeps me up at 2:34AM.

My only snag in understanding the "MLP phenomenon" is that it's worshipped with such unbridled enthusiasm and poetic candor that all I can see is a THICK layer of irony, streaming and dripping off of a movement I watched rise from the peach- and lavender-colored depths of the internet. All the way, responses like those of SGTR_2 were not only expected, but sought. The confusion and outrage (or at least the potential for such) make the phenomenon what it is. Otherwise it would just be another deceptively well-written and nuanced modern cartoon.

I believe without a doubt that "bronies" enjoy the show. It just seems to me like the fans belabor their admiration of MLP in order to conceal a more realistic and honest appreciation for a cartoon of genuine quality. Maybe someone could shed some light on this apparent ironic reverse psychology?
