Can you play PSP discs in the PS3?

Even if the PS3 drive would accept a UMD, it wouldn't be able to read it. UMDs use 660nm lasers; DVDs are 650, Blu-Ray 405 and CD 780. You'd have to mod your PS3's laser mechanism to get the 660nm required.

So, no.

Well, I guess I won't be playing GT PSP when I get it but will need to spend $200 total. :(

You can play PSP games downloaded as far as I'm aware - someone can come and prove me wrong.

Eric - it was a question that could have been easily solved if you simply looked up the PS3 on google or asked someone here. I know you've come a long way since you started here on GTP, but this thread just wasn't needed ;).

Nope, you can't play PSP download titles on the PS3.

The only ones which play on both are the PS One classic titles, those you can download and play on both your PSP and PS3, and swap game saves between them.

PSP only titles, despite the fact that you can download them on a PS3 and then transfer them to the PSP, can't be played on a PS3.

Which I think sucks!!!

Surely the PS3 has the power to play PSP - I reckon they lock them out so that you can't play them...

GT:PSP would've got more sales if you could've played it on PS3 I reckon!!

PSP discs are smaller. Nintendo Wii can play the Gamecube discs which are about same size as the PSP discs. This is one piece of the complicated puzzle.

Most CD trays can take smaller discs - but as the PS3 doesn't have a tray - that probably won't work - and get stuck and break stuff!!!

And the UMD's are inside a plastic sleeve....

Gamecube discs are essentially just miniDVDs, and the Wii itself has all of the same hardware as the Gamecube. UMDs are a completely different format from any other optical media, and Sony essentially made it from scratch.

The PS3 can play 8mm miniDVDs, so it can probably play CD Singles as well.

Wait... so it can play PSP discs?

No way man. Otherwise everyone here at GTPlanet would be playing GT PSP on our PS3, while we wait for GT5.

Also, this will in no way boost PSP hardware sales.

Oh man...I just thought, if PSP games can be played at PS3, I would be dreaming I'm playing GT PSP on PS3 . Yeah, the true fact is neither Sixaxis nor DualShock3 can be supported on any PSP games.

But this is another good information I've learned now 👍.

Yep, here's a link to a picture

First time I see an UMD. How much capacity is it?

Nope you can use the a PS3 controller on GTPSP with the PSP GO using bluetooth or using a USB cable and custom firmware on the older models.

I think the capacity of UMD is 1.8GB.

Can you play PSP downloads from PSN straight on your PS3?

Already asked and answered.

Wait, what about downloaded PSP games? Is it playable too?

And all I got was a shattered wish...

The closest you can get to PSP games on your PS3 is if you have a PS2 backward compatible model and get the PSP > PS2 ports, like Twisted Metal: Head On.

I am pretty sure that the desire for PSP games on your PS3 is not just about playing them on your TV, but if it is a set of PSP Component Cables will do that. I play GT PSP on my TV all the time.

Wait... could you clarify that a little? I think you're on something. A solution I hopefully think.
