To me, you're left with two choices:

- 2008 Pontiac G8 (Holden Commodore):
Bugger, I was just about to suggest that (Had the information ready, and everything!). But I strongly agree, the G8 is a great option if you’re looking for something well-priced and powerful.
My dad took one (SS-V Commodore) for a test drive late last year, pretending he was interested in buying one (not actually planning to). No less then a week later he put a deposit on it, and sold his much-loved Volvo V70 in a flash
Brilliant car though! The amount of research and money put into the new Commodore/G8 really payed off. 👍

...Or you could wait a little longer for what could be the next Chevy El Camino (Holden VE Ute) :)

No back seats though. Unless they're importing the Crewman (Hey, is there a VE crewman?)

Yuck. Pick up an "everything Must Go" last gen CTS, or used STS (hey, that's actually a idea). Sooooo much better.

It was a suggestion, as I know there are folks who really like the Sigma II CTS (me) and some who don't (you). The current Simga I CTS is still a damn-good car, especially the ones that Cadillac will be pushing off here in the next few weeks. You could probably pick up a CTS Bose or CTS Sport for well-under the usual $35-36K mark once the '08s start to show up, which still makes for a good deal. They are quite nice for a GM on the inside, drive impressively well, and there is always that LY7 goodness...

I'd be more apt to wait for the '08 though, but thats because I'm crazy...

...However, a used STS isn't a bad idea either. The '08 STS models should be showing up fairly soon as well, and that should drop the '07 pricing pretty quickly as well. A nicely equipped STS with the LY7 and the sport package sounds like a good buy to me, given that it is a nice size and has a good amount of comfort level in it...

But really, if you were to buy a car that size with the V6, you'd be better off with the G8...

I wholeheartedly recognize that everything about the new CTS is far and away better. Then we get to the front end, and all those great advances fall apart.

Haha, oh yes. I forgot he wanted back seats, so don't worry about the ute skippy 👍
They won't be making a new crewman btw... not sure if that's good or bad.

I see it's been mentioned before but as soon as I read your post I thought "ah Audi A4q/S4" but if that's not your cup of tea then fair enough.

I really don't know much about US cars.

What about a GMC Yukon XXXL supersize with a side of coke? :D

I don't drive a BMW.

So, no.

Oh that's right. You just pretended to drive them for years so you could enjoy the benefits of people thinking you were a prick. Too bad you couldn't enjoy the benefits of actually driving one with that act. Nice job 👍

C'mon dude. What are you doing? You that bored for something to do you wanna argue over nothing? Put your toys away before you hurt yourself, k?

Yeah, Doug, I have to echo this sentiment. With my Admin hat firmly off my head, speaking just Duke-to-Doug, I think you're pretty well advised to not push this any further.

I was pretty sure my comment would be taken as I meant it, which was with only a little rivalry between automotive brands and no ill-intention, but...

...you say one bad thing about BMW, the gloves come off, and the personal remarks begin to come out. There's no need for that! After all, it's just a car, not your identity...

EDIT: and though I presume it cannot be, this is a reminder to not take this post with any ill intention. I know you two are proud of your cars, but this is just a friendly suggestion to lighten up a touch on the subject. That's all! 👍

Back to recommending cars...

I know that you said no Camaros, but how about an '08 Z28/SS? That really can't count for being too common can it?!

Edit: Or a new Challenger, you know, whichever camp your living with.

Maybe you should wait until the new 2008 Scoobaru WRX comes into showrooms. I personally think the 5-door model looks great. WRXs will always be fun, and it's practical as hell.

Do you plan on doing any tuning? A WRX is already cool, but it's easy to make them cooler.

Actually, I wasn't talking about BMWs at all. I was talking about you saying - or, technically, agreeing - that ///M-spec is a prick. That's all. It didn't have anything to do with car brands.

You have a PM.

I would say something on the matter, but I'm this close to being banned.

On the cars:

What about a Saturn Aura XR? Good power, interior, looks, and that 6 cog transmission is good. Also rich Corin-Er.... Moroccan Leather

I think Ebiggs has an excellent point. Wait a couple years and buy yourself a shiney new Camaro.

Saving that, I think a 6MT GTO would be an excellent choice. Or an M-Coupe. It may not have back seats, but it (looks) to have acres of storage and cargo room behind the seats, judging by the car's profile. You can always get a 'responsible' car when you need one. For now, I personally would get something silly fast and get my jollies in, and purchase an el-cheapo beater for utility purposes.

One other thought if you're hell-bent on buying something soon. What about an Acura CL-S? If you can find one with a manual, it'd be a decent car.

I was pretty sure my comment would be taken as I meant it, which was with only a little rivalry between automotive brands and no ill-intention, but...

Your feelings toward BMWs don't particularly concern me. Your feelings toward me personally don't particularly concern me either. But I certainly won't let you make a public spectacle about it, given it would be off topic, completely unproductive AND against the AUP.

Since there seems to be some confusion over the remark, let me take just a brief moment to explain it. You will notice it was directed at skip. I happen to know he doesn't actually think of me as a prick from this post (unless something has changed between now and then). Thus, the comment was intended as a good natured, self-deprecating joke; to show I had no ill-feeling towards whatever he might associate with owning a European car.

Now given that I 'opened the door', I'm a fair enough guy to let you or anyone else make what they will of the remark. But if you were expecting it to be some sort of babbling Jim Bakeresque admission of guilt and an invitation to take as many cheap shots as you wish; sorry to disappoint you.

Back to the show....

I think the GTO is about a thousand times better choice than either generation CL Type S. Better in just about every way except maybe resale, but that may not even be true.

Oh, I completely agree. I would get a GTO long before a CL-S, but I was just putting it out there as an alternative. I do like the styling, but not the FF drivetrain. Or the vast amount of automatics over manuals. But most notably, you can get a nice 1st Gen CL-S for $10-15,000. I think a GTO could easily be double that.

Okay, I think the best suggestion was the G35/37. (I put in the 37 cause the G gets a bigger motor next model year.
I love the coupe. It's a really nice shape and size.
But for my needs, and the occasional nasty snow/ice storms that we get here, I'd take the G35/37X.
The G37x has the advantage of having all-wheel-drive.
Yes, it is a sedan. No, it only comes with an automatic. But it is a beautiful automobile, has all the creature comforts, etc. Did I mention that the 37 will have just over 300HP?
The only "boring" feature, is the reliability.

I've wanted a G35 for a while now, and do lots of research. It has a very good reliability rating. It also has almost no bad consumer ratings. And usually the only people that rate cars on the internet do it because they love them or despise them. No one seems to despise the G.
Heck ask Jordan, he has one!

But most notably, you can get a nice 1st Gen CL-S for $10-15,000. I think a GTO could easily be double that.

I've yet to see a GTO around here for less than $20K, that includes the first 5.7L versions, so I'd assume the same across the country.

---

On the G35/G37, they're good cars, but I'd remain a BMW snob on this one. There are still some quality issues with the Nissan, but they've gotten better. Furthermore, I don't think they will ever match the "purity" of the 3-series, ever, so if you aren't into spending money to get the best, you may as well get the next-best.

Hmm.

2004/2005 GTOs are running $19-21k around here. I saw a 2006 yellow 6spd locally for $22k--I would of bought it if I had the money.

There is a black 2004 GTO with the 5.7L around the corner from my house. I keep meaning to stop and look at it, but there isn't any way I could afford it. IMO, its the perfect car for me; German-level handling performance and quality, all-American engine and transmission.

And don't forget Aussie styling.

Too bad it wasn't:
Aussie design
German handling
American engine--tuned by Europeans

:sly:
