Have you bought a spare G2 yet?
Not yet, but I am looking for a good deal in my area.
Both you guys are more pc savvy than me
Savy is not the word I would use to describe my level of knowledge. Not sure jumping from a 3080 to a 4080 is significant enough, as much of the dlss stuff is mostly irrelevant for Ac and VR in general. I would go for a 5080, when you can afford it.
I still can't get into toolkit but I did not need to before so will leave it for now.
Same here.

@Masscot one thing about your micro stutters.
I remember I did have the same in a WW1 combat flysim game WoFF. I was constantly measuring with Afterburner/HWinfo64 in onscreen display mode trying to determine in real time the source. One day I decided to disable the whole thing because I did give up my search. Then miraculously there was no micro stutters.
So if you are logging like with CM own, PrecisionX, FramecapX, Fraps, GPUz or whatever logging software try to disable that and see what’s happen.

Thanks for the idea, but no, I don't run any of that stuff.

Has anyone else found in VR you get to a point in tweaking the game where it looks amazing save everything then start the game the next day with the exact same set up and it doesn’t look as crisp almost like something isn’t pulling through or loading correctly. I’m using the Quest 3.

Thanks

Sounds like typical compression artefacts with wireless headsets. Get a Reverb G2 with display port for consistent video quality?

Thanks, I’m using a wired connection using Quest link but usb. Be good to compare it to another headset one day as quests have all I’ve used since the first one. It looks great sometimes but inconsistent so could be limitations of the Quest and its usb connection I guess. Seen a few videos of the Pimax crystal light but looks a bit big and also the expense of changing.

Yeah, the video over USB is heavily compressed. It's a real shame that the Quest didn't include optional display port for tethered use with lossless video.

Yes definitely an oversight. Does all the G2’s use display port and would I need to have the controllers also if I’m just using it for Sim Driving as I’ve seen a few used ones without controllers fairly cheap? Also can you bypass Steam VR? Thank you.

No need for controllers if sim racing with the G2. Be aware that the headset is a generation behind your 3 but it is reliable and a good image is possible but probably not as sharp as yours.

Thanks Steve for your comments, will do some more research. Also looked at Pico but may just hang in with the Q3 until something else comes out.

The pixel count difference is negligible.
Meta Quest 3 has a display resolution of 2,064 x 2,208 pixels per eye.
HP Reverb G2 has a display resolution of 2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye.

Bear in mind though that the video in the Q3 has to be compressed to be sent over USB from the PC, then decompressed at the other end by the headset. This not only uses CPU cycles, but also reduces quality of the image. I briefly had a Q3 and found the compression artefacts for sim racing completely unacceptable, eg road textures were muddy, distance clarity was lost etc. USB simply does not have the necessary bandwidth to transmit HQ video effectively.
The video over DP in the G2 is a "visually lossless" technology that still reduces bandwidth by compressing the signal, but the compression is imperceptible to the human eye (but not mathematically lossless).

Honest opinion now that we have Oasis? You simply won't get a better VR experience in sim racing for the money than the Reverb G2. You'd need to spend ten times as much before significantly bettering it, and even then you'd be deep into diminishing returns. It's a no-brainer.
But don't hang around. People are offloading them very cheaply at the moment, thinking they are getting one over on the buyers and selling them a soon-to-be paperweight because of the imminent bricking by MS, but as soon as Oasis becomes general knowledge then prices will surely rise and rarity will increase as people decide to keep them.

How cheap can you get a G2 for? As Steve said, you don't need the controllers, a joypad will do for the initial setup.

Hi Masscot,

Thanks for your detailed response. I’ve been reading/watching about the Oasis driver and looks promising. I’m still on windows 10 so will it work still? I’ve seen one without controllers for £124 but I think it is G1 wrongly listed as has a textile front. There is a G2 with controllers for £155 but is a V1? Which version do I need to look at?

Oasis will not work with W10, you need to update to W11.

You want a G2, V1 is OK but ideally V2 would be a better buy.

I never tried a Quest 3, so I cannot recommend the G2 as an upgrade. I would expect the performance to be fairly similar. Of course if you can get more money selling your Quest 3 than you would spend on a G2, there is always that. The G2 with Oasis for AC works flawlessly, it looks amazing to me.

As previously mentioned you do not need the controllers, mine never left the box.

You need a V2. What Masscot says about image quality makes perfect sense although I do believe your headset has a much bigger sweet spot. Only what I've seen on the tube mind. As for price, i think they are going up already. Check out ebay, no cheap dead to me now prices. Headset is bullet proof electronically but plastic stuff does break. Masscot snapped a strap and i snapped the centre strap lug on the top of the unit but all fixable with screws and in my case, two apposed coat hooks. It could be we just have big heads. My cable went so I do not use the clip on the side as I think it hinges to much when you're putting it on. Again, the cable needs to be the v2

I think you're going have to upgrade to Win 11 anyway soon, MS are stopping support for Win 10.
Make sure it's a G2 and not a G1, and as others have said, try to get a v2 if you can, it has slightly wider tracking to pick up the controllers better. Doesn't really matter for sim racing though. Ideally the little in-line power box will have a small switch on it, that way you know it's a v2 cable.
Ideally find one locally on FB marketplace. If it's been listed for a long time, contact the seller and offer something silly (like, £40-£50) after mentioning that MS are about to brick WMR and officially render it useless.

Yes been putting the windows upgrade off I’m honest so probably right I need to look at sooner than later. Thanks for the info and good shout about FB marketplace. Nothing really local to me but sure someone will post and prices generally lower than eBay. My next step was to try the official Meta link cable but they are £80 and I’m not prepared to pay that for a cable. For around that I should be able to get a G2 and depending on how it goes I can either keep the Quest for my kids or sell it on 👍
