i really hate people who sling their door into someone's car leaving a ding. It's probably one of the most rude things people can do. It's gotten to the point that if i catch someone doing it i feel like i could literally rip their head off and eat their soul. anyone agree?

No, I don't agree.

It is not rude to ding someone's car. It is rude to do it on purpose, yes, but it is normally done by accident.

I remember sitting in my friend's Volvo with 2 other people while another friend ran into a store, and this dude in a Ford Festiva parked next to us, opened his door, nails my friend's car (who is sitting in the driver's seat). the Ford driver freezes, looks at the menacing teenager sitting in the Volvo he just nailed, looks at the door, looks back up at my friend, shuts the door and drives off.

So funny.

Well of course it's usually done on accident but what makes it rude is it's easily avoidable. All you have to do is pay attention and have respect for another person's property. I didnt work hard to spend good money on a vehicle just to have some dumbass screw it up when i make sure i avoid doing that to someone else.

But, that's why they invented....

POPS-A-DENT!

An accident isn't an action of rudeness, a deliberate act (at least in this regards) is. It's not rude if it's an accident, it is however careless in most cases though it can be almost impossible not to "ding" the car next to you in some tighter parking spaces. When I'm in a tight gap, I simply open my door slowly to avoid marking the car next to me should the door make contact.

yeah, it happens on accident, or perhaps if someone is in a rush to get somewhere. But it happens all the time, so i guess there isn't much that can be done about it

I'm pretty certain that this kid who used to work with me used to put dings on my car. As soon as he quit, I did not get anymore. I have at least 5 or 6 bad ones, that have effectively brought the trade-in value of my car by around a $1,000. Now that I'm looking for a new car, I'm really feeling it. If that punk just stole my stereo system, it would have hurt less.

Accidents do happen, but why is it that I've never even come close to denting somebody else's car with my door? Easy, I care. Some people care, some people don't.

It may happen by accident but its still usually caused by carelessness, If I see it happen due to carelessness it makes me extremely mad and for that reason when I drive my good car to somewhere like a shopping centerer I always park away from other cars, but that doesn't always avoid it.

One day I parked a nice distance from everyone on my own with my alarm/ immobilisier set, I come out 10 minutes later to find a single car parked right next to me in the middle of no where, a trolley sitting inches from my car and my alarm has been set off. I was furious, I checked my car over for dents and luckily couldn't find any.

Is it rude? No.

Is it socially unacceptable? Yes.

Should you be able to--mentally, not physically--kick someone's ass for doing it to your car? Yes.

Is it complete and utter bullcrap? Yes.

Did I already sort of cover that in question two? Yes.

Would I do it back to a person who did it to me? No.

Why have two dings instead of just one? I have no idea. Besides, I said I hate it, so I won't do it to others. I haven't done it yet, because I take pride in having a nice car and I believe all cars deserve care, so I wouldn't do it even to be funny. I always pay attention to where my door is in relation to the car next to me, and I always make sure it doesn't hit. My dad taught me that little bit of respect. I also make sure that the person sees me pay attention to the fact if they're in their car while I'm entering mine, that way the next time they see me they might remember and say "that guy's cool, he watches out for other peoples' cars." Something like that.

Should a "Sorry, it was an accident" be an acceptable response to a "WACK!"? No. They should have paid more attention, simple as that. It's inexcusable. If you can't get in that door, use the other. If you're idiotic enough that you just can't manage without hitting something you should be denied a car. Yes, I'm a cold-hearted bastard, especially when it come to people screwing with my car, or someone else's for that matter.

Funny, when I saw this thread title I was expecting it to be about the noise that many cars make when the door is open -- "ding....ding.....ding.....ding...." -- and I was going to suggest finding and disconnecting the speaker for it, like I did.

Anyway, door dings are annoying, yes...I have two in the exact same place on both doors...and one of those dings happened shortly after the door was replaced from an accident where a woman backed into my driver's-side door with her minivan... :grumpy:

I also once dented a 350Z's door when my door was ajar on a windy day...the wind swung the door into the 350Z. :ouch:

See, I can totally see that happening to anyone. Once, in downtown Seattle(they got notoriously steep hills), this guy accidentally slamed opened the Ford Ranger door into my Mom's car while I was in it. Did I get mad at him, nope. Something like that would've been hard to predict, unless you are in a similar situation all the time. Those are real "accidents"

This is the reason i usually try park the Skyline as far away from other cars as possible (but not a rediculous distance away). Other cars like Mum's i'm not worried too much as here car is already covered in dints and scratches. :s

sometimes I still have problems. :(

I have noticed often if park away (even far away) cars start parking next to me anyway. Its like having a dot of rust that spreads.

Hehe, just remembered what my dad did a few years back, it went a little something like this...

Back when my dad had his Ford Granada. We were waiting for my mom to come back from shopping. We were in a car park, obviously. Parked next to a brand new BMW 3-Series (Well, it was at the time), now, this is where it starts to get funny. The BMW driver (A business man, late 20's I'd say) comes back from whatever he was doing. He was a right snob, pushing past people and the like. Comes back to his car, my dad knew what was going to happen next. As the BMW driver opens his door... WHAM! So my dad rolls down the window and says 'What the hell do you think you're doing?' And the BMW driver just laughs at him. So my dad leans over, grabs the door, opens it and... BAM! One big dent for the BMW driver

Haha that just reminded me of a funny 'Malcolm in the middle' sketch.

HAHAHA. that reminds me of one time me and my friends were taking a road trip. We were in my friends suburban and we were about to pull out of a parking lot. A guy in a truck parks beside us and just carelessly slings his door into my friends suburban. He looks at the door, looks up at me, then walks away. I think, "screw this guy," so i open my friends door to ding that guy's truck but instead i happen to hit inbetween where the cab and the bed meet and i just ended up screwing up my friends door worse.

I noticed someone do it to my car while I was sitting in a diner, and I came up with an idea.

Since my car has a remote alarm, I can set it off whenever I want.
So, next time I see someone hit the door, and I'm a reasonable distance away, I'm going to set the alarm off, and then run toward my car.

I'd like to see the offenders reaction.

Okay, I can see the wind causing oyur door to slang as an accident, but if oyu actually were in control of the door whe nit happened it's inexcusable.

I believe there's a mathematical equation explaining how doing something purposely, yet unaware of the fact, is physically impossible. Fammie porbably knows it.

He needs a bell like a hotel front desk.

Ding!

People should watch before they open the door. My family has never made a ding to the door to anyone. But someone once paid us back with a 5cm-across ding on our door after shopping.

You can purposefully do something yet be unaware of it. All you have to do is get drunk. ;)

But then couldn't you argue that you were under the influence of a mind-altering substance, and therefore cannot be held accountable for your actions?

If anyone knocks my corsa with their car door or any part of their car...... I will literally go psycho...... woman in car park at B&Q...... you know who you are!

It is people just being fat and lazy......they do it on perpose clearly. I make sure I never do it to anyone even if it means causing discomfort for me have to squish through the tiny door gap.....It is totally unacceptable.
