Your question is too broad to even start to give you an answer.
But here is a tip. Have a look at what the guy in first place is using and just use that one ;-) If everyone else then keeps beating you, then you know where the problem really lies :-))
And once you start to learn the cars and the tracks you will then be able to make you own choices ;-) Until then just copy what is winning. Simple really ;-)

Agreed.. Different lobbys or series might have rules about cars i.e. a 'set' power/weight or 'PP' for a car.
Some cars might not be suitable for a particular driving style or skill level. At high PP and low grip tyres, if you're using 100% throttle and brake, you could be 'faster' for the race distance with a car that can put the power down or is easier for you to do consistent laps, rather than what potentially is the one that can do the overall fastest lap.
Open lobby racing can be quite different to organised/equalised performance series/lobbies, so you'll need to adjust accordingly to the specs/rules of the lobby....
Sure, there's never lobbies with a set 'pp' for any stock cars only, especially those who loved shuffle racing on GT5 so much, they would never dream of doing a lobby for stock cars with a 'set' PP...

Second, although that might be a good clue, that doesn't always work for me. I often do better with some non-mainstream cars.
Third, we're talking about pp classes, and people's tuning skills range from non-existent, to highly personal, to uniformly awesome. Therefore, I recommend Praiano cars for those who have not developed styles and are seeking advice.
