Career mode: absolute necessity or overrated?

Couldn't. You couldn't care less. People sound like they've just had a botched lobotomy when they say/post that they "could care less".

And yes, it does make a difference. The little "n't" or "not" that you're overlooking completely changes what you're saying. It's like the difference between "is hot" and "is not hot".

That's a pet peeve of mine.

Glad someone cleared that up. 👍

Back on topic-

I like career mode. I'd have preferred more races but I'll live with what I've got. There are ways to make career mode longer and more enjoyable, for instance, repeat races you like using an 'underdog' car, use the endurance races as time trials between friends and finish them without even realising you've been there for 5 hours. There are plenty more ways to play.
I think the reason GT career mode is so short is because most games now are geared towards online play and leave offline play to the minimum. I guess this is just the way gaming has evolved for certain types of games.

GT is many things to many people. Personally, I could care less about career mode. I found the whole progression, earning credits and 'buying' cars boring and pointless. A lot of people want more events. That's fine. Others are desperate for a save option for endurance events. Great. But with the horrible state of the AI, I can't really understand why anybody cares about either of these options. The only thing worth playing in GT5 is online mode. And if you find the right group of online friends, you know, real, living, breathing, THINKING opponents, it's a zillion and six times better than anything in offline mode. I really could care less what level I am or how many XP I have. The only thing that matters to me personally is the enjoyment I have racing other people.

More and More people are geared to the Social aspect (for any games), but it does not mean everyone is comfortable or want to interact with others. Some still like to play by themselves... lol

GT5 does have the most social aspect out of all the GT games, but compared with today's standards, it still lagging behind because Kaz is still focused on pleasing the Solo crowd first... (which is fine by me, since i am one of them :p )

Hard to please two different crowds ;)

This topic really needed a poll.

For me, had this game not had the career mode, I probably wouldn't have bought it. However, I know some players don't like to have to work for things but rather just want everything handed to them right away, so I support having an arcade mode on the side, wherein they can select tracks and cars at will to race as they please. Fortunately, the game has both. It's a win-win.

So far so good, it's Your opinion and we all get to know that You like to" work hard" in a VIDEO GAME...probably others have to do that IRL so they are just looking for fun, relaxation and enjoyment in video games.

No career mode? Take away that feeling of progression?

No way. That's one of the reasons why I love GT so much. Starting out with a crap bucket, and eventually earning your way to a real winner. Beginning with some low prize events, all the way up to epic and long championship battles. That's the beauty and appeal of GT (career) mode.

My thoughts exactly. The theme of starting at the very bottom and progressing to the very top has always appealed to me because it gives such a feeling of satisfaction. Even if you never make it to the top (and I never have in any GT game before GT5, which says something) the massive array of race series for increasingly prestigious cars really makes you feel like you're climbing up the ladder. That's always appealed to me, and its poor implementation in GT5 left me strongly dissatisfied. Its complete absence in GT6 would probably deter me from buying it at all.

Completely agree here. I spend most of my time in single-player, but I still have an absolute blast online with friends. Like you said, it's hard to find the balance. I agree that neither of the two completely satisfy.

As for the career, it should definity be longer. That's no question, because compared to other GT games, it is seriously lacking. But one thing that can never be truly avoided is grinding. Which is why the inclusion of an event creator would be indespensible. It'd allow you to slave away amassing the money to buy xxxxx car, but at the same time you're still enjoying yourself because you're driving the cars you want around the tracks you love.

Nobody likes wasting hours lapping Indy, and nobody appreciates being forced to bore yourself to death just to make progress. Remember we paid £40 (or however many dollars) for this game so we may as well get our money's worth. I don't appreciate giving away that amount of money only to be forced into doing what I don't really want to do.

The career mode is ok in GT5, not great, but if you play online alot you wont notice that much. I find career mode necessary for a different reason, when you get up levels/cash and purchase/trade whatever you fancy, and then start racing the cars you get, they become uniquely yours, only your car has that rap sheet, only your car has this many wins, this many miles. Im pretty sure if i just drove my LP670 in the GTPSP format it wouldnt be as fun because that car would not be something that i earned with true grit, itd just be an option to drive. It wouldnt be as fun if i didnt know that car was unique.. It has long paid itself off by now anyway with 20 wins. But bottom line, career mode gives you the option to have/get what you really want and nothing else, and then give a car that deserves it a truly memorable win or moment. Remember in the other thread how i had the post about the two wheeling gallardo? what fun would that have been if i had just said i was driving "the" LP670 instead of MY LP670? Thats alot of the fun with a game like this

I play offline mode on games just because it is there, not because its amazing or anything.... Online is where everything is now, and although the online in GT5 is only "OK" its still better than anything all other GT's had to offer.

If GT5 online had almost everything available to limit and check, we could run proper series races with perfect limits keeping things equal, the way it is now we rely on good sportsmanship to not do certain things we ban.

I play online 95% of the time, only going to single player to grind for cash lol.

It's quite alright. Most English teachers, and anybody who learned English in the UK or commonwealth countries, would agree with him. However, it's not necessarily 'wrong' in absolute terms.

The Oxford dictionary already recognizes “could care less” as an American colloquialism. Many people, however, regard it as incorrect since it makes no logical sense (if you “could care less” it means that you care at least a bit).

So it's something you can say, slang though it may be, but it shouldn't really be written.

O/T done. :)

Explain? As far as I know, every car you get in GT PSP, must be bought first (with cash earned with races), you don't get anything for free, except the starter car.

For me a Career Mode of some sort is a neccesity. Although, say, a pre-determined regulation set and you get to choose track, cars and AI cars within that set would be perfect IMO.

The only things I have against A-spec is that they could have given us a good race weekend and season type of experience, and better AI. This, coming from someone who rarely touched single player in GT5. (0 licenses to date since I got the game.)

I can see gamers who have just picked up the game (or have just recently played simracing/driving games), wanting a simulated career mode which can take them from zero experience to a decent contender in online races. It's really essential for them to build up their confidence and get a good benchmark for performance, without demoralizing themselves when they go online.

oh they made it sound like you just drove the thing.. picked the car you wanted and went.. i never actually owned the game so i was just assuming.. but regardless, its more fun the way the regular GT games have it

It's definitely an absolute necessity, but its also an absolute necessity for it to be overhauled. The formula is outdated and stale. I hope they can come up with something better in the future. However the ability to create our own events or championships with our own rules and settings would be AMAZING and very much welcomed. If they gave us a track creator, they can sure as hell give us an event creator.

I couldn't care less about career mode. I want more options for setting up my own races in arcade mode. The secret menu in GT5 Prologue allows me to choose each and every one of my opponents... it's not possible to do in GT5. Way to regress PD... :(

Personally I like career mode. I like the races that are challenging much more than the easy ones though. I would very much like to see tweeks to GT Life. I think they should eliminate the XP system. It was much better when the licenses were used for qualifying. I'd also like to see an event and championship creator. I could make championships where most of the AI were competitive instead of just 1. As for AI I'd like to see more consistency and an option to set difficulty. The AI's competence is about right for players just starting out. It allows you to make a mistake or two and still win a race. Once you've played the game for awhile though the AI's shortcomings become readily apparent. It would be much better if they had at least 2 levels for the AI so that both beginners and veterans could have AI at their level.

An extensive career mode is absolutely essential to me. (What I miss the most are the "Special Conditions" events from GT4. It was very enjoyable to pick you car you liked and then see how far you can get with that car in the considerable variety those events provided.) In my opinion the career-mode in GT5 is a complete failure.

Unlike most games with an online option, I have played GT5's career mode extensively and I enjoy it. Usually I just skip to online and never play the rest of the game.

I would like more tracks and some options for setting difficulty in races, but it is what it is.

I do not currently have internet and I refuse to dupe or auto-grind..but I need money to buy, tune and customize my drift cars that I mainly enjoy w/in arcade mode; hence the need for a mode to test the handling capabilities of the cars I have, to force me to buy and tune(and sometimes ultimately enjoy) cars I may not have even paid attention to, and to provide me some level of competitive play w/ multiple opponents; all while paying me for it....we're always asking the gt series to provide us a realistic driving experience, what's more real life than the fact that sometimes, in the quest to get what we want, we have to do things we don't necessarily want or like to do?

I think career is a major selling point - it's what draws me in primarily. Although the GT5 one isn't perfect I think that it does the job, and hopefully can be improved upon with DLC or the next franchise installment. Either way, an engaging and progress-oriented career mode is more engaging to me than arcade-type stuff - I find it gets repetitive quicker than a career.

No Career = No Sale

I dont play online very often and a goal-oriented career where you have to work from nothing to earn credits/xp etc provides so much more incentive to replay than an extensive sandbox arcade mode.

Doesnt mean A-Spec is without its need for improvement, also doent mean an extensive sandbox-style arcade mode would be a bad thing either :p

I believe the career mode needs major revamp. There it's no sense of prestige in the game on or offline. It all seems like a grind with no other reward other than "oh I get to do it again!".

To be honest, Career Mode in Gran Turismo is an absolute must and would be detrimental to any series that doesn't include one - which is why I no longer have GT: PSP or even my PSP (traded them both in for my collector's edition GT5).

GTs from years past included so much content that you could find yourself in several situations within an hour's worth of gameplay. In a Daihatsu "whatchumacallit" battling for 1st at Grand Valley - to runningin a car on the completely opposite side of the spectrum, like a Dodge Charger running a Muscle Car series - and sooner or later you somehow find yourself going sideways on every damn turn in an European Championship Series on Nurburgring in a European LM car.

GT5 sets the challenge and then you meet it. There is no challenge in just aquiring cars and racing whatever you want for whatever amount of money. If anything GT5 should steer away from that because that is what killed my interest in GT: PSP. No career mode? No point! Sure, I love driving cars all the same... but I like to drive cars that I honestly earned by meeting the challenge of a Career Mode and then look back at my accomplishments, my win record, my win/loss ratio, how much prize money I've aquired, how many prize cars I've won, how many series I've conquered, I like to look at all the cars I've purchased and tuned for specific challenges. I like to buy and purchase cars from the wealth I've built up by having this career mode. This is what replays, photos modes, and activity logs are for and GT5 is really rich in this aspect.

Career Mode is spectacularly deep. If you take the time to really look into the gameplay and how the game was designed you'll realize there is much more to it and that there are a TON of variables some that you can control and some that you can't. This is where the real game is. GT5 doesn't lack the depth of GT4's Career mode, and if anything it has more depth. The only problem with GT5's Career Mode is that there isn't enough content - but what content there is, is in fact just as deep as any other GT before it.

All IMO of course.

It's called a racing game, not a career mode game.

I spend huge amounts of time in Practice mode simply because there isn't an A-Spec event that features the combination of track I want, along with the car class I want, and on top of that I don't like playing online. It's frustrating that I don't get money after hours of driving that track.

I'd love a mode that gives me a complete list of tracks, I select one and select my car. The game then grabs 7-15 cars that would be a god match, and we race however many laps I preset.

There is no challenge in just aquiring cars and racing whatever you want for whatever amount of money.

What about the challenge of racing?

I mean, if someone just want and bought a Miata out of the UCD and went straight to online, they'd probably deal with more challenges than anything A-Spec could throw at them.

GTs from years past included so much content that you could find yourself in several situations within an hour's worth of gameplay. You would have all of that and more on top of it in online or an open mode.

Also, what is the depth you're referring to?

I'd prefer that there would be the current carrer modethingy and the thing in GTPSP.

layout the career mode like in gt4 with the requirements and every thing but it lets u drive around to each event thus c-spec is born

It's called Need For Speed Underground 2, IIRC

GT-mode is the very essence of Gran Turismo in my view. It would just be another generic race game without it.

I would like the GTPSP version of D,C,B,A and S level unlocking of each track as an Arcade mode though.

Complaints about the quality and quantity of A-Spec events are obvious, and we'll not discuss them here. ;)

Before GT5, there was a nice little game called GT PSP. It featured NO career mode whatsoever, and was highly critiqued for it. It did have one other feature however, and one that GT5 lacks no less: pick a track, pick a car, set the options, drive and win cash. Dare I say that in this respect GT PSP provides more replay value than GT5 as far as the single player experience is concerned?

So, which option do you prefer? An extensive career mode like GT4, with gazillions of predefined events? Or a 'pick whatever you feel like' event selector/creator?

Discuss!

The gaming industry has shifted to favouring multiplayer content in many games, and I expect future iterations of Gran Turismo to follow this route.

I could see future GT games taking the A-Spec career mode online with matchmaking.

  • You open up GT Life, check your calendar. Okay, it's Sunday.
  • The events running (available) today are Sunday Cup at Fuji, Clubman at Midfield, whatever, so you select an event
  • You are matched up with other online drivers entering the same event, and the rest of the 16-car field is filled out with AI
Look at the amount of offline vs. online content in AAA FPS titles. Look at the amount of offline vs. online content in the last NFS or two. We're headed in that direction with GT. Online gameplay beyond the open lobbies (which are great and a PC-style multiplayer racing experience on the consoles is rare), DLC cars and tracks for additional revenue, etc.

I see two distinct demographics on this forum:
  1. Players who value trophies/achievements, gold trophies on events, a level 40, 100% game. Goal-focused players. These folks feel cheated that A-Spec delivered less than expected. These guys want a game. Beginning, midpoint, endpoint, and have now shelved GT5.
  2. Players who just want to race and feel challenged. For them, GT5 is a sandbox with many possibilities. These guys are in online racing leagues, hate the credit and leveling system, want to drive everything in every race series imaginable.

I count myself in the latter half of those two groups, and I think the former group (looking for a big, offline, check-ever-box game) will be disappointed with where GT is heading as a series. Namely, online.

  • Now this is intuitive thinking, I like this a lot, interactive career mode. How would you control the online idiots who drive stupidly to ruin other peoples races though?
