actually there is a way hes faster then kimi. kimi didnt have the best lap. he made some small mistakes. both mclarens didnt look as good as they normaly do. alonso had a pretty good lap. i dont think button is running all that light either. hes looking pretty good. if he can keep the pace up in the race and not kill his tyres he should do pretty well.
I can’t remember the last time McLaren was lighter than Renault. Renault always pit early – Kimi is faster than he looks.

Button will be light, he always is pretty light. The car isn’t as fast as the Renaults or McLarens.

Blake

yeah the car isnt as fast but i dont think hes super light. not like pit right away light. both mclarens are having understeer problems. kimi is running heavy though so yes he would be faster the alonso if he were not. i dont think he will win though. i dont think a one stop is the way to go. now that alonso doesnt have to worry anymore he looks pretty good. of course fisi will try to hold up kimi if he can and i think alonso just might pull out a lead and pull it off.

PLUS, Alonso saying Renault did not tap into all the power of the engine for qualifying but will for the race. Wow! Looks good for Renault!
Eeerr, he said they were using full power for qualifying…

MS did good 👍

He will be there at the end to pick up the pieces from the Mclaren vs Reno

Will be an interesting race, Go Kimi!

MY Prediction

1. Kimi Raikonen
2. Juan Pablo Montoya
3. Rubens Barichello
4. Fernando Alonso
5. Jarno Trulli
6. Micheal Schumcher
7. Felipe Massa
8. Robert Doornbos (he is a good driver)

Haha, you said Reno.

Man, this is going to be tizzight. It's going to be like an imola with double the cars and twice the speed.

Year of the Rooster, and Alonso was born in the year of the Rooster, so good luck is on his side. Plus, he was the 100th pole winner for Michelin tires.

I thought I heard him say they weren't at full power, but will be for the race. I guess playing a video game, chatting on msn, surfing the net and watching F1 is too much for me to handle all at the same time.

My predictions...

1. Alonso
2. JPM
3. Fisi
4. Webber
5. Button
6. Sato (ha-ha)
7. Doornbos (he was born in the year of the Rooster too)
8. Trulli (despite the Toyos not running well)

Well I disagree. I still think the two cars are very competitive right now, I can't really tell which one is "faster", all I know is I'm rooting for Raikkonen to win again, but that doesn't mean he's the fastest, I just hope he'll be the fastest :sly: .

Anyway, take a look at Practice 2 as was posted by Blake.

Saturday Practice 2

Pos. Driver Team Time Laps
1 K. Räikkönen McLaren 1:33.212 12
2 JP. Montoya McLaren 1:33.554 12
3 F. Alonso Renault 1:33.793 13
4 G. Fisichella Renault 1:34.392 11

Obviously the McLaren cars aren't "slow" and the Renault cars aren't "faster" either, but both McLaren drivers did 1:33 in practice, so that's a pretty fast lap. Also, de la Rosa did a 1:32.834 in his second practice, so I wouldn't worry about the McLaren car being less competitive. I think it's going to a tight race and I hope so too.

“All weekend we didn’t use full power until now, in qualifying, and the result is this.”

Anyway, I think Renault will probably have Fisi going slow and holding up the pack while Alonso runs away with it. However, given past showings, I don’t think he’ll have the nerves to hold them off for too long!

Maybe it would be wiser to do it the other way around, surely Alonso could hold the pack until his pit-stop then start charging back up to 4th.

Also, Alonso is running slightly lighter because there is no way he is .4 seconds faster than kimi over one lap, no way.

Excellent logic, and a well-supported argument.

GO RENAULT!!!!

You want to give a well-supported argument against that statement?

Oh wait, sorry, you don’t have one because the McLaren is a faster car, McLaren are always heavier than Renault, and Renault haven’t gone past lap 20 without refueling in … wait, they never have!

Blake

What will happen if Mclaren and Renault Draw tomorrow??
I think Sato has given up because his lap was REALLY slow. I say 75% chance of Renault winning tomorrow because their new more powerful engine will make the difference on those long straights. Not that i want them to win :sly:

Well, McLaren need to get two points more than Renault. If they end the day with exactly the same total points McLaren win because they have more race wins.

What kind of jackass thinks he knows everything about everything? Answer: You.

I'm tired of this whole "Kimi is better than Alonso; Alonso is better than Kimi" thing before every race.

You have no idea how much fuel Raikkonen has on board, nor do you know how much Alonso and Fisi have. Bottom line: The Renaults are on the front row. What does that tell us about who is faster? Nothing. However, I strongly suspect that McLaren would rather not be staring at "Mild Seven" on the starting grid in the deciding race of the manufacturers' title. Just a thought.

And oh yeah, if McLaren is leaps and bounds faster, why are they relying on pit strategy to win? Couldn't they just take the front row in qualifying, and drive away during the race?

Umm...have you not been watching F1 all season? Just because you don't agree with facts doesn't make it reality. You need to chill and stop the name calling.

Fact is ALL season the McLaren's have been running much heavier on fuel than the Renaults. Sometimes as much as 10 laps more with a faster or equal per lap pace. What does that tell you? If the McMerc has say 200 more pounds onboard yet is as fast as another car reason would say that the McMerc is faster. Put Kimi behind the wheel and it's a done deal. Kimi is the faster and more aggressive driver compared to Alonso. That is a fact. beyond that the McMerc is the faster car than the Renault, maybe by as much as .7 seconds per lap given everything equal between the two cars. The McMerc has better aerodynamics, better mechanical grip and is easier on tires than the renault. I'm not knocing the Renault. it's an amazing car but the McMerc is the faster of the two.

McMerc's problem though is reliability. If Kimi didn't have all those mechanical DNF's he would have wrapped the title up last week, hands down. At least two of Alonso's wins have been because of Kimi's DNFs. However that is racing. Alonso has better race craft and knows when to back off and play it safe in order to save his car...just as he knows when to push. Kimi seems incapable of backing off and is always right on the razor's edge, always! Both ways have their merits but Alonso's have proven the better this season.

As for qualifying for the Chinese GP. Kimi went into turn one much muh faster than anyone else I saw and missed the apex once the corner started to decrease drastically, thus loosing a few tenths. He also had some understeer coming onto the last straight which cost him another tenth or so. Not to mention he most likely has at least 5 more laps of fuel, maybe more onboard. Alonso had pretty damn close to a perfect lap, the Renault looks much better out of the corner. Alonso seems able to get on the throttle a little earlier than the McMerc can due to it's understeer issues.

It's going to be a very interesting race.

BTW - Pit strategy is part of racing. Ferrari have shown that for years. McLaren is probably the next best team at it, though when the blow it they really blow it (Canada 05). Some races are won in the pits. That is a fact.

I'd put them as equal. I was more impressed with Alonso's drive in Japan than I was with Kimi's. Fernando drove like a nutcase to pass people on the track, finally stepping out of his conservative mode since he clinched the driver's title. The way Kimi ate Fisi up was impressive as well. I just feel that since Alonso passed everyone that Kimi couldn't, he had the better race, but his pit strategy seemed to put him at a disadvantage.

I disagree. More often than not, the McLaren eats its tires faster, and it does not have better mechanical grip, as evidenced by the fact the McLaren is worthless when following another car closely.

Part of driving fast is knowing when to use the brakes.

Wouldn't that be aerodynamic grip.

He means that when a McLaren is behind another car it loses more of its grip than the Renault does, that indicates a lack of Mechanical grip. However, I think it might be in the setup. Kimi likes a car with understeer, when you follow another car you get alot of understeer – it could be possible that his setup, plus the aero induced understeer, makes his car understeer like a dog when he’s follwing someone.

Also, McLaren use softer tyres than Renault as far as I’m aware. The car tends to be really nice on its tyres.

Good info, as usual, Blake. Being a fanatic of F1 racing, your info and opinion is usually spot on. Not bad for a Jackass.

On Speed, they said that the huge drop-off in grip has to do with the McLaren's wing being so deep or something with the front wing.

Name one race this season where the McLaren ate it's tires faster than the Renault that wasn't due to the driver pushing hard. Remember Monaco where the Renault's tires were trashed? Remember Canada where the Renault's tires were going off?

I'm a fan of Kimi, that is well known here, but beyond that...his drive in japan was one of legend. Far more impressive that Alonso's. Kimi drove from the back to the lead. Passing people on track and in the pits. The fact was that unlike Alonso Kimi didn't need to be as aggressive on track as he knew he had a huge fuel advantage over everyone. Alonso on the other hand had to push. I'm not knocking Alonso, he deserves the title. he won it. He drive in Japan was nice, that pass on the outside of MS on 130r was ballsy....but to say his drive was better than Kimi's that day....nope.

Alonso's best drive this season was Imola, by far...amazing day for him.

will you still root for Kimi if he goes to Ferrari?

Just a question, since I'm at a cunnundrum on the subject. I've always been pro-Kimi, even when he was at Sauber. But I've also been anti-Ferrari all the way. In the same way, I've always been a McLaren fan (since 1982).

God yes! I'll root for him more. I adore Ferrari, always have...but I'm neither a MS or Rubens fan. I respect MS for what he has done but have never counted him as one of my favorite drivers. My drivers are Trulli, Kimi and JPM (in order). Unfortunately for me two of those guys are at McLaren, a team I just cant support. Kimi in Red with V. Rossi by his side would be about as good as it can get for me.....

It was huge for me this year at the USGP in Indy to buy a McLaren/Mercedes "Kimi" hat. I wear it proudly due to Kimi...not McMerc. My Trulli hat I have no issue wearing!

F1 has always been more about the drivers for me...so I can support drivers I like at teams I don't. Right now if I had to be asked who is "my team" I'd say Toyota. The scuderia however, given driver's I like would trump that in a heartbeat.

Wee, half an hour to the race and I´m still awake! 👍

its more of a when he goes to ferrari i think.

and you all know me. i dont care much about who drives as long as they can. i like my team more.

Albers ran over MS! Ha-ha! OMG! Pre grid warmups, and Albers takes out MS!

the back up cars should be ready by the start. still thats crazy man i saw the replay. ms just goes left all of a sudden and gets his ass run over.

TV Commentators here are blaming Schumi for that one... guess he had a Sato moment?

kensei

I got myself a McMerc hat at a Mercedes dealership... sweet! It's the same one the team uses! The one that says West McLaren Mercedes...

The race is starting in a couple of minutes now! Woo hoo!

Nice job by Sato on the start. He gained what, four, five positions? To bad he jump the start by a full second and had to do a pit drive through. Sato strikes again?

Albers slammed into MS, who he was not allowed to pass but tried to anyway. No way it can be MS fault. But, we'll see what the official word is.

EDIT: Oh, and it looks like Kimi is running very heavy on fuel, which is no real surprise. JPM look like he could pass him.

The Renaults have less wings than McMerc... that means higher top speed, right?

de la Rosa is a commentator on Spanish TV... he's talking about the Albers-Schumi incident. Apparently it's a pre-warm-up lap and they can pass each other... anyway, you can see Schumi is driving normally and when Albers is about 3 metres behind, he locks the wheel to the side... blocking Albers. Anyway, back from the commercial break!
