87. The stuff is already over two bucks a gallon, I can't afford 89 or 91. Especially not to run in my crapass 190. Besides, it takes crappy fuel fine, the thing is practically a diesel as it is, being an old benz and all.

I've always used 93 in all of my cars.

We here use the recommended octane that Mazda specifies for the car. That means regular for the 323, MPV, RX-7, and '87 626, and premium for the 2 Probe GTs and the MX-6 GT.

Grades change though, like some places have 87 octane but others have 89 octane.

Mid grade is for losers.(just shouting that out)

Ohh, and for you smarties using Premium in a regular-specified car, WHY? You can cause buildups in the engine from the different fuel ingrediants. And most likely you aren't making anymore power, and you're paying $0.20 a gallon more. Check your owner's manuel!

Octane has nothing to do with increasing horsepower in the first place. It is just like what duke said - the purpose of a higher octane gas is to make the chance of detonation less likely, and I"m sure you don't want a detonation to your car.

My accord's fuel system is designed for 87 octane

Many cars, such as the Prodrive Subaru Impreza STi, specifically say to use only 97 octane or higher.

But I prefer to mix the 95 octane with a bit of ethanol.
