Welcome to Fall/Autumn! It means that pure football weather is on the way. Cooler temperatures on the way. Or for some places like Pittsburgh or Seattle, pretty damn cold. I really enjoy cooler weather. It's really good here in Houston. While it may not be deceptively cold in Houston in colder temperatures, it's at least livable. You can have clear skies and comfortable cool weather later in the year and early next. Speaking of Fall, some teams fell and fell hard.
Last Week...
Notre Dame is 0-4 For the First Time in School History
The blue and gold. Most people say Notre Dame are overrated pieces of trash. They talk about them not being in a conference for football, too good to be on regular TV (so most of their games are on NBC), and all that. Notre Dame is having a nightmarish season. Lethargic at best. They've lost to Georgia Tech, at Penn State, at Michigan, and now to Michigan State. Notre Dame's looking like the 2006 Colorado Buffaloes at this point.
Michigan Returns to Winning
Appalachian State and [especially] Oregon took down Michigan. You can't keep a good Wolverine down. So they took it to Notre Dame and now Penn State. Michigan State is next on the hit list for Michigan. I'll have Appalachian State later in this report.
Kentucky Surprises the Nation: 4-0 This Season
Eastern Kentucky. Kent State. Louisville. Now at Arkansas. Kentucky's having a great season with their standout QB, Andre' Woodson. Anyone who thought Kentucky would be the SEC's version of Duke or Temple are sadly mistaken this season.
Louisville on the Schnide
Two successive losses. It almost seems like the loss against Kentucky during Week 3 deflated the hot air balloon of Louisville's offense. BCS Bowl hopes are pretty much dead. Even more so when you lose to a struggling offense like Syracuse. Being a good team and losing to Syracuse has to bite you on the backside pretty hard. On a bright side, Louisville lost by a combined 9 points. So it isn't like they lost in lopsided affairs. Their offense isn't putting up 50-point scores and winning by more than two touchdowns. Not the Louisville of old. Let's see if Louisville can regain their stride in their next game.
Appalachian State Falls from Grace
The Mountaineers made all kinds of publicity by beating Michigan at Michigan. Now, the Mountaineers of Boone, North Carolina fell to the Wofford Terriers. The Spartanburg, SC boys got it done at home against the visiting Mountaineers. Appalachian State's 17-game winning streak came to an end after winning two successive National Championships.
What Happened to Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh lost 34-14 last night as Connecticut... that's right- Connecticut... came in and beat down Pittsburgh. The Panthers would lose to UConn in basketball (men or women), but this was a deplorable loss for the Steel City Kitties.
Houston Rules, Rice Stinks (nothing new, actually ^_^)
Houston improved to 2-1 as they took down Colorado State. A game I didn't report was Rice at Texas. Texas exorcised Rice badly. I believe they are winless. The big match between Houston and Rice will take place next month. The Cougars are trying to do without their dynamic quarterback, Kevin Kolb, who was since drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Illinois and Indiana Share a 3-1 Record
Illinois beat Indiana on the road on Saturday. The (whatever Illinois' new nickname is (granted it's no longer the Fighting Illini)) edged out the Indiana Hoosiers. Both teams normally aren't the powers of Big Ten football, but they both share a 3-1 record.
Let's Get Ready to RUMBLE!!!
There was a rumble alright. This rumble involved North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T. North Carolina A&T lost more than a simple game of pigskin... they lost sportsmanship as well. From what I read from CSTV's bottom line, this was a bench-clearing brawl which had to have the police intervene with pepper spray. Some athletes were injured in this horrendous skirmish.
Division 2 Rushing Record Broken
Chadron State saw RB Danny Woodhead break the all-time NCAA Division 2 rushing record be broken with over 7,066 rushing yards of offense by the Chadron State boys. The previous record was 6,985 yards by Germaine Race of Pittsburg State back in 2003-2006. It would be interesting if Chadron State took on the #1 Grand Valley State Lakers with Chadron State's rushing threat.
Here's your AP Top 25 for the Football Bowl Subdivision after Saturday. See if your favorite team is in this list:
01 - Southern California*
02 - Louisiana State*
03 - Oklahoma*
04 - Florida*
05 - West Virginia*

Here is an NFL Focus as we go from college to a brief look at the NFL. I'm a Houston native, so I'll usually start with my hometown team.
[I}--- NFL Focus ---[/I]
Houston Faces a Stern Test Against the Defending NFL Champs
* Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
Andre Johnson was not available to play. Even though Houston ran the ball back for a touchdown on the opening kickoff (after Indy was offsides), the Texans still couldn't contain players like the Houston native, Joseph Addai. Matt Schaub made some poor passes. Eric Killings for the Texans was whacked on Special Teams for a kickoff and was motionless. He has a neck injury. Prognosis on his condition is unknown. Texans were going down like flies with injuries. This included players like Ahman Green, Ron Dayne, and Jacoby Jones. Injuries depleted this Houston team, and the boys weren't able to take down the Indianapolis Colts. So Indy takes an early lead in the AFC South. Give the Texans credit for hanging in there. Hanging in there won't win you games, but it gives you confidence in future games. Indy gets Denver next while Houston will travel to Matt Schaub's former team- the Atlanta Falcons. (30-24; Indianapolis Colts)
Brett Favre Wants To Break Some More Records
* San Diego Chargers at Green Bay Packers
Brett Favre ties the NFL touchdown pass record, but his Packers couldn't take down the San Diego Chargers unit. (31-24; San Diego Chargers)
Philadelphia... Overrated?
* Detroit Lions at Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia came out with their old gold and sky blue colors. I like a combination of blue and gold. I probably would like blue as the primary color and gold as the secondary. The dark green and white weren't in the house, but their colors shone brighter than the blue and white Detroit Lions. Ten wins for Detroit? You can scratch (56-21; PHILADELPHIA EAGLES)
A Number of Teams Sporting Classic Colors
The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins played seperate games and wore throwback colors. We saw Pittsburgh have some classic colors last weekend

John Force Injured in Crash
John Force won a drag racing round, but the multiple-time Funny Car Champion lost control and whacked the wall in the other lane. He was alert and well. It would have been tragic if we had lost John Force much like we've lost Colin McRae.
And Your the New MotoGP Champion is...
...21-year old Australian, Casey Stoner. He stoned the MotoGP pack as he was able to win the Grand Prix of Japan at Twin Ring Motegi's full road course. Rossi had some troubles while Casey Stoner kept it on both wheels to win the title. The next round is in three weeks at... Phillip Island- an Australian track. A dream scenario would be that Casey Stoner finishes behind Valentino Rossi in Japan, but comes back in Australia to beat Rossi and clinch the title on home ground. Regardless, my hat's off to the Aussie.
More action when play resumes. So let's talk about Week 5.
