College Football: 2014 Season

I will say this- Maryland wanted a Rivalry with Penn State, and now, with that incident, they got one.
 
Here's the new Top 4 and the first two out:

01 - Mississippi State
02 - Florida State
03 - Auburn
04 - Oregon

First two out:
05 - Alabama
06 - TCU


I guess I'm okay with this. I thought TCU would probably snatch 4th, but you can certainly make the case for Oregon after their performance against Stanford this past Saturday.

Can't really argue with those rankings. Ole Miss sure slid a long way down. They're not even in the top 10 anymore. I'd love for the final 4 now to be what it ends up being at season's end. That way, Auburn takes revenge from last year's natl championship game in the first round then either gets revenge on state for earlier in the season or gets to beat Oregon for the second time in the national championship game :)

If I'm not mistaken, James Franklin and Randy Edsall do have something personal between them. That could have added to the hostility.

I don't know about anything between personal between them, but I'm sure there is something between Maryland and James Franklin. If I remember correctly he was the coach in waiting there before he took the job at Vandy.

While that act wasn't the worst I've seen, it certainly wasn't a good thing. I've actually seen a high school game where the captains have had to be separated before the coin toss before...but that's high school.

If it was a rivalry game it doesn't surprise me. I heard about a game a few years ago here in Tennessee where fights broke out during warmups.

That's what it was. I remember now


There was one game when I was a senior in high school between 2 teams near where I went to school (one was our rival) that had a bench clearing fight during the game. One team's coaching staff was suspended indefinitely because they were not stopping players from coming off the bench.

The closest thing I remember to a big brawl in a college game was when Miami (Florida) had a big one or when Blount cold clocked the defensive end for Boise State
 
Fordham at Bucknell is going on right now. However, can you believe there is a Barbeque delay in this game? Somebody's BBQ pit caught fire and has delayed this game with lots of smoke pouring out. Got to love college football, folks.

DOWN GOES AUBURN!

It was very surprising when Texas A&M stunned Alabama a few years ago with "Johnny Football." With no Johnny Football at Alabama's other powerful team, the Aggies won 41-38, silencing the many whom filled Jordan-Hare Stadium.

* Texas hosted West Virginia and took them down hard. 33-16 was the score as the Longhorns brought the Mountaineers back down to earth.

* My Houston Cougars failed at home against Tulane. It was a 31-24 loss for the Coogs as Houston had a chance to take the lead in the American Athletic Conference- some 5-way tie for first.

* Connecticut lost to Army. This game was played at [New] Yankee Stadium. This is a cool 35-21 win for the United States Military Academy with Veteran's Day coming up. However, this goes to show how sorry UConn football has been this season. I remember when Connecticut actually had a pretty competitive team several years ago. Sad...

* Michigan won a game that looks like a high-scoring baseball game or a low-scoring lacrosse game. At Northwestern, the Wolverines won 10-9. Northwestern tried to play some hero ball by going for two with about three seconds left in the game. *buzzer* Didn't work.

* Bye bye, Notre Dame. You're probably done in the College Football Playoff after failing 55-31 at Arizona State. When I first followed the game, I think Arizona State was up 31-3 or something.

* Ivy League. Cornell and Columbia lost today, and both are winless on the season, both 0-8. Harvard beat Columbia. The Harvard Crimson are 8-0.


Unfortunately for one of our GTPlaneteers...

* DOWN GOES NORTH DAKOTA STATE!

NDSU had a 33-game winning streak. Well, that streak is no more as the Panthers of Northern Iowa took down the Bison at the UNIDome.


Congratulations to all other winners up to and beyond the time of this post.
 
All got tidied up tonight:

- LSU loss eliminates them from Title Contention. Kansas St. also likely out.
- The winner of Alabama - Mississippi State next week will likely clinch a spot in the Championship 4. Note the word likely. Mississippi State would clinch a spot if they win but Alabama may not. It is certain though that an Alabama loss would eliminate them from contention.

Top 4 after this week SHOULD be:
1. Miss St.
2. Florida St.
3. Oregon
4. TCU

Top 4 after this week WILL be.

1. Miss St.
2. Florida St.
3. Alabama
4. Oregon.
 
The Big 10 as a whole probably won't have anyone in the playoff since Ohio State dominated Michigan State tonight. That also means that Ohio State will absolutely destroy Michigan when they face off, and that means I won't even bother to watch that game.

Possibly, possibly not.
Ohio State will move into the top 10 (or SHOULD) by passing Notre Dame, Michigan State and I'd even argue that Auburn and Kansas St. should both fall behind them. They will need help though:

If K-State gets passed by Ohio St, the Buckeyes need K-State to beat Baylor in their final games.
If Alabama WINS next week vs. Mississippi State, Ohio State would need them to lose to Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
Also, if Alabama wins next week, OSU would benefit from a Ole Miss win vs. Miss St. at the end of the year.

Pretty much though if Ohio St. runs the table, they will be in good position. The rest will be on the rankings. Georgia is not going to be a factor because if they win, they would just replace the SEC west team. The Pac-12 will only get one school between ASU and Oregon.

As a Michigan fan it somewhat pains me to say this, but I would rather have this happen over last year. Most of my dads family is from Ohio and are big OSU fans and they were at our house during the game, so needless to say it wasn't a pleasant visit.

I don't see Ohio St losing again, but I think they still would need some help to make the playoff.

Here's the thing though-even if they win (which, they should since Michigan is brutally awful this year) they will probably be knocked for being in the Big 10. After watching the Spartans get railed by Oregon, the committee will still probably be unsure of whether or not a Big Ten team can hang with the big dogs. But watching OSU blow out the Spartans put a smile on my face because all of my Spartan friends were gloating about how good they were after beating Michigan. Ohio State shut them up for good and essentially killed their chances at going to the playoff.

It was a given that Auburn would be knocked out of the discussion after their disappointing loss hosting Texas A&M. What do you think about this latest set of rankings?
 
I really think that Mississippi State and Florida State are the wild cards this year moving forward. If one (or both lose), the spots that they hold will open up. One of them will certainly go to Alabama, but I'm not sure where the second would go.
 
Oregon or Arizona State, one of the two are guaranteed not to make it as the loser of Miss St./Alabama this weekend. If Mississippi State wins this week and LOSES one of it's remaining games, then the field opens up for Baylor and Ohio State.

I think State is in unless they lose to both Alabama and Ole Miss. Bama is only in if they win out. There's too much anti-SEC sentiment after the original top 4 for a 2 loss SEC team to get in over an Arizona State or TCU.

Arizona State will NOT make it if Oregon makes it. One of them will have two losses eventually as they would play each other in the Pac 12 championship. It is possible Baylor and TCU could both make it, but that's also unlikely. Ohio State, being ranked at 8, has increased it's chances significantly but that Va Tech loss could hurt them more down the stretch.

If any conference gets 2 in, it will be the SEC just because all those teams started out ranked really high. The problem is: on any given week, any SEC team can beat any other SEC team...well except Vandy

Well, if Missouri is leading the SEC East and lost to Indiana (one of the worst two teams in the Big Ten), some other SEC team losing to Vanderbuilt certainly is possible.

I think most Sun Belt teams could beat Vandy this year, they had trouble beating Charleston Southern.
 
Yeah, if you almost lose to an FCS team and the conference that you play is the SEC, you're going to have a bad time.

Needless to say they've lost to every SEC team by blowouts so far. Not a shocker at all. James Franklin took his bowl win and ran to Penn State because I'm sure he knew it was going to be rough this year
 
Going on right now are East Carolina at Cincinnati, Bethune-Cookman at Hampton, and on deck is Southern Mississippi at Texas-San Antonio. Games this weekend include Washington at Arizona, Florida State at Miami, and Mississippi State at Alabama among MANY other games.
