Confused by Porsche 911s...

997..993..etc, I thought that a) they were all 911s and b) 997, 993 and 911 were different cars, but they all look the same! Engine configurations? Transmission?(RR,FR,4WD?)

It's generations of the 911 model. 964, 993, 996, 997 (current model). Those are Porsche-internal code names for the different generations.

I see that its predecessor, the 356, is due to reappear in 2013!

some cars after the original 911 still are part of the 911 series (the 2.7, carrera sc 3.0, the 3.2 carrera,930 which is the turbo, which have some variation within themselves) Then comes the 964 series which is applied to all the model lineup of 911s at the time, including a turbo model and an RS model, later the 993, then 996, and finally 997, even though these 911s are all still called 911s to the present day, their series may not be the 911 one

I know how you feel, I deal with it almost every day. One of my bosses is a Porsche nut and if he sees something on the website that is just slightly wrong, it must be fixed!

996, 997, 997.2, etc, etc. Blah Blah Blah.
