In my previous thread about a Convertible NSX we got into discussion about "what makes a good looking convertible" so I thought I start a whole thread about them.

I used to think convertibles were teh crap and moonroofs were the way to go. I still very much like moonroofs, but certain convertibles definitely got it goin` on.

My favorite, incase you hadn't caught on, is the Honda S2000 - preferably 2004.

My girlfriend's favorite is the BMW Z4 (I'm making sure she understands the benefit of the 3 liter) (:

My best friend wants a black fast back Corvette from the sixties. I want him to get a convertible - they have better "crusing" potential.

I saw a BMW Z8 in person for what I believe was the first time during my lunch break yesterday. Absoutely beautiful vehicles - much better in person than in picture.

I've had several friends that either have owned or do own a convertible Mustang. Pretty much an American standard. I always think of Airforce pilots driving Mustangs for some reason.

I really like the Caddy SLR, it just looks so damn good. Also the SSR looks pretty damn sweet to. And for the most unusal thing I'd say a Dakota.

And now for some really ugly buggers.

Alpha Romeo ... something or other.

Porsche 356 Cabrio ... I'd like to call it the Porsche tin can.

I can't say I'd ever buy a convertible. Almost all of them are ugly and overpriced. But there are a few gems in terms of aesthetics.

BMW M3
Honda S2000
Cadillac XLR
Lotus Elise

They all look better with hardtops, though.

THIS is a convertible. Anything not looking like that isn't a great convertible, with the exception of the Honda S2000, which is the best looking modern convertible. Perhaps that's why I'm buying one this summer. :D

My list of retarded cabrios include the VW New Beetle, the VW Golf and the Mini Cooper. Oh, and the Lamborghini Diablo Roadster.

The s2k looks good. I like the Triumph TR6s too. Miatas are nice to drive, especially with the top down, but I'm not sure that I'd consider them good looking :)

The Shelby Cobra is very pretty. However, it is not a convertible because it does not convert. It is simply a topless car--a roadster.

That's a Spitfire, I think...

I notice how all your "good" convertibles are posted top-down, and all the "bad" convertibles are posted top-up... Conspiracy!

Sure, the Cobra's a great-looking car. Have you seen one with the top up (as in GT3)? Bleugh!

I don't know many convertibles which look good with the top up... with the exception of the Mercedes SL/SLK, I can't think of a single one.

I think, personally, that to make a great looking convertible, you need a very long front end, and a relatively short rear end. Like the Jag E-Type, for instance.

That's not a Spit. I don't even think it's a Triumph; I think it's a Jensen-Healey. This is a repost, and I'm honestly not trying to brag, but here's my favorite convertible:

It's not a Spitfire - but it's certainly not a Jensen-Healey. The Healey had open, original 911-style front lights, and a flat rear. It's a Triumph Stag - and on reflection I should have known that offhand, seeing as we had one parked on our drive for 3 years... D'oh.

Same car, different angle:

Super-Supra: On first glance, I thought it was the 2003 Viper...

The Corvette is boring to look at. No character, no defining feature, just blah.

We should go on a search to find the ugliest convertible ever built... we might get some interesting nominations.

Stag was my second guess. In fact, I came back to post it here, when I saw your post there. Nice!

In other words, absolutely perfect - just ask BMW what happens when you try to go for character and a defining feature.
