Corrupt Memory card

Since April I have twice got the message that the memory card is corrupt when starting GT4. First time I had done some 30% completion. Then started all over again and then reach 45% when the same occured. Does anybody have any bright idea of how to save the data on the card or how to do the avoid starting from the very beginning again?

Is there anyway of getting a saved "image" from another gamer into my PS2?

Buy a second memory card and keep a back-up of the data on that.

Buy a MaxDrive and keep a back-up of the data on your PC.

i think the corruption is caused by switching off while saving. Don't turn off while the red memory card thing is flashing or loading screens are up.

Amp is exactly right. Backing up data is the only way to prevent complete restarts.

Be sure to turn autosave off and be careful when turning off your ps2/removing your memory card.

Luftrofl is right. The autosave feature wears out your memory card. Switch it to "Restricted" and don't forget to save before you turn off your PS2.

Does it? I never knew that. *Runs to PS2 and changes settings before amnesia sets in*. I though that it was a flawless way of saving, not destroying my memory card. Yes well the corrupt data happened to me as well, after getting all the liscences and nothing else :grumpy:

Odd, I've never heard of this "wearing out" myself. I've always had the GT4 autosave on, and saved 100's of times in GT3 and other games too and I've never had a problem with the card.

I must admit though, in GT4 I did corrupt the memory card once while it was autosaving, by turning off the PS2. :(

Are you for real ?.... Wears out your memory card ?... Unless a chip goes bad, and REALLY corrupts your memory card, nothing will "wear" out your memory card. It's a solidstate device - and nothing but a faulty chip will destroy it...

Time will tell if the Chips will decay with age, but saving in GT4 certainly won't do anything harmful...

Well i'm still a bit sceptical to be honest... i dont want to loose all my game saves (including San Andreas on 100%). I may just back them up.

Ohhh... Backups _can_ go bad, I'm not doubting that - But wearing out a memory card is the silliest I've heard all day...

And I DO backup my card... Trust nothing with bits and bytes on them..

Yes better safe than sorry.... TBO the possibility of a memory card being worn out is a bit far fetched i have to admit, but there is always that slight possibility.

You really need to work your approach on people, I got as far as Are you for real because with an attitude like that It's all BS from ignorance.

I once turned off the PS2 pressing the reset button while it was autosaving. But the PS2 turned off after the autosave ended. After that I turned it on again and the game worked normally.

If you don't HAVE the answer - Don't GIVE the answer...

And yes - I need to work on my people skill... It's nothing new...

OK well i'm not the best with computers so i dunno. As long as the game saves load fine thats all i'm worried about.
We can't all be.. And exactly..

So remember those backups ;)

I can't figure out if this was sarcasm or heartfelt ;)

But still - nonetheless, beautiful - I owe you one

Well you're on my ignore list so I don't know/care waht you said but please do work on your people skills.

If there is corrupt data on a memory card from any PS1/PS2 game, their are only two games that allow you to delete them.

The first game is called Gran Turismo 2.

The second game is called Gran Turismo 3

They both have File Operators, which means you can control/organise/copy/delete any file on the memeory card.

These are the only two games I know that can delete corrupted files on 8mb Sony memeory cards,

you can delete anything you want in your mem card corupter or not under the Browser Menu on your PS2 no games needed... totally stupid if it requierd a game to delete.

Pots and kettles and stuff immediately springs to mind. You must have a very long ignore list :nervous: yeah, yeah, I know, it just got longer by 1 :(

OT - Corrupt mem cards does not seem to be in the FAQ - or it is not immediately obvious - perhaps, given that people frequently ask questions about them there should be an answer in the FAQ?

If you have a PS1 and you have corrupt data on your memory card and it does not delete in your browser menu. A copy of GT2 and executing the file operator will...will remove your corrupted data, any data for any PS1 game on any Sony PS1 memory card.

This was found out when using music making game/software which used a PS1 memory card in one save, sometimes they would corrupt and wouldn't delete even after using the file browser...until GT2 came along and saved us a lot of memory cards from the bin.

For the PS2 and PS2 memory cards.... As above.......And no it is not stupid... it's a fact.

well i never had a PS1 so i have no idea about this about PS1... so thats out of my reach.

There's something else you can get that allows you to manage your Memory Card- AR Max!! It allows you to delete things such as corrupted data, and you can also download game saves off of the internet. Highly recommended by me.

Has anyone considered the possibility of interference ? I used get this problem with my old PSX cards , , , until i discovered kitchen aluminium . Since then ive never looked back , basically
the PS2 MagicGate cards are more secure but it only takes a stray intensity of microwaves etc to corrupt portable data . Also , autosave may not be wise .

Memory cards can wear out.

The RAM in your PC is volatile - it's made to change, so it can go through many, many, many changes without it wearing out. The downside is that when you power it off it loses all the info.

Your memory card is flash ram, which retains data but is slower to use and usually has an expected maximum number of writes. This is why you can't just replace your PC harddrive with flash memory - the number of disk writes your OS would do would wear it out in no short order.

Devices that use flash ram will have a life expectancy. Apple might expect you to add songs to your nano n-thousand times, Sony might expect you to do n-thousand saves. Either which way, eventually it will wear out - it will not last forever.

Without someone at Sony telling us the mean-number-of-writes-before-fail or life-expectancy of the cards there's no way to tell if the original corruption that started this thread is down to a dodgy memory card or powering off while it's saving.

I know this is an old thread, but had the topic problem...

I also had done 85% and ive had to start from scratch....

All other save games work as well so im a bit pissed off to say the least!
