I find these rim arguments rather silly.
I totally agree.
And Thomas's refreshingly honest post says as much, too...
We could have delivered the CSR E only with a more expensive rim made of metal and leather and raise the price. This just kills the option to get this wheel at a more affordable price for the many people who like the rim as it is and rather have spectacular force feedback effects.
I posted a near identical argument on ISR...
"Sure, it's a €30 rim on a €500 hub (including R&D, manufacture, shipping, profit, etc). But how many sales would Fanatec have made if this'd been a €700 wheel?
Barely half, I'm sure.
And if that WAS the entry price, I can guarantee that I wouldn't own one right now. But I do, and I'm glad of it.
Yes, the rim 'cracks', flexes, is unergonomic and feels a little cheap. But does it matter? The wonderful Trojan horse, that is the hub, is in my home... and I'm happy about it.
The rim is the wheel's only shortcoming, but happily I can, and will, willingly upgrade the rim, now that I have a full appreciation of what the product is capable of. Anyone else that has spent 500 big ones on a toy steering wheel, can no doubt afford to down the line, too."
