Exactly what i was thinking!

Hehe... You must have read this as I was posting in the other thread.

Anyways, works real nice. I find that the closer you attach it to the shifter housing, the better it performs.

Some really creative mods here Stones, kudos!

Nice stones, did you make that bracket yourself? Could I buy something that would do that job at a local hardware store?

Thanks guys.

I did the bracket myself. As well as the other mods. I have a small mill in my basement. Comes in real handy for tinkering. :sly:

Caz posted this link. Search the site for "tube clamp"

So nobody take the 6 screws out of the rim and disconnect the cable? The CSR may not have the wheel release of the Elite but for the adventurous a real but modified rim could be possible.

Where's my allen wrenches? :sly:

Stones, you should update the original post with all your pics.

I also like to tinker, tho i stepped back from this project last week to get a fresh perspective on it. Couple of things i discovered would not work before I even tried to make the parts. Instead of puhing forward I decided to back away for a bit

Good idea Caz, on the pics. Perspective... absolutely. I always say, "can't build it, until you can see it".

I saw it. Fully. Except what i saw was flawed ;) gotta get the design flushed from my head to achieve what i want it to do. Starting to rethink the problem area, but very slowly. Havent set foot in the shop in 5 days. Might start re sketching something tomorrow night at work. Maybe....

So dissapointing, being so close, only to get punched back a few steps.

I think it was edison who said " i never failed at creating something, but i succeeded at creating many things that didnt work." Or something like that ;)

Looks like a mech kinda thingy!
Your efforts reminds me how much I have changed things and ideas over my own cockpit.

Keep at it.

I still haven't pulled the slick plastic part of my wheel off. (As mentioned, I'm still waiting on the resolution of my shifter problem. I'm not going to start tinkering with the wheel until I can confirm that it's not the root of the issue, in case in needs to be returned.)

I did notice, which I hadn't before for some reason, that the CSR Elite looks to have a textured plastic in place of the slick stuff in those areas. I wonder if Fanatec could be convinced to sell those pieces separately to those of us who'd like to swap them out.

The grip tape solution, or my planned coating in Plasti-Dip, will certainly be effective, but they're less than elegant.

Actually, the Elite wheel looks like it has the same material that the CSR has (under the FANATEC logo) all the way around. And w/o taking off my tape, it appears that each section has it's own screw(s) so, I think it would be very possible to swap these pieces out. But, at what cost? Do we care?

If each piece comes off seperately with its own screws why cant you take the top part off, open it down the middle of the seam and wrap it in leather with the stitching together at that seam tucked into the wheel when you screw it back together? You'd have screw holes in the leather but so what? Or even easier, just wrap each half of the wheel in alecontera and screw them back together?

Looks like it might be a little more complicated than that. The "shiny" plastic parts are captured by the matte (softer?) parts. Total disassembly of the wheel rim, would more than likely be involved.

Wheel tape.

Decided I really didn't like the plasticky/seamed wheel and went with some black gel tape. Very comfortable.

I'm thinking this :) http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_700446_langId_-1_categoryId_165755

I'm still laughing since first seeing it :)
But I am going to check some of these out http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...1_catalogId_10151_categoryId_165755_langId_-1
If I can find one that feels good, I'll cut it to size and join it at the bottom.
I sold my CSR to my friend, I was over at his at the weekend. The "grip" part was really slippy, the shiny plastic part actually had more grip, and it just feels too thin for me (used to PWTS)
I'm just waiting for my CSR Elite wheel to arrive, hopefully first batch, this rim mod will be a temp measure until another rim is available.

Yea...that Elite wheel sure is something to look at. I'm fairly satisfied with the standard...especially @ 1/2 the price. :sly:

Sorry I would've responded sooner but I was unaware others were modding out their CSR's.

I can confirm that removing the upper and lower peices of the rim are as simple as removing the screws in the rear. Coating these areas of the rim would be rather simple.

I have gotten as far as removing the entire rim off the base (by removing the Allen bolts from the face). However, upon doing so I found something rather odd: Fanatec has glued the wiring harness (from the wheel base) onto the connection terminal of the circuit board of the rim. No doubt to thwart modding and removal of the rim (not to mention a sure fire way to know if you have been tinkering with it). It is weird to me because it seems switching out rims on this model would be rather easy when the only mounting bolts are the allens and the only connection is the wiring harness. It seems almost as easy as switching out rims on the Elite.

I had initially done this to "re-glue" the Alacantara on the right side (it has become rather loose but my fault none the less) and to also cover the rim face in 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber (for the "elite look"). I fixed the Alacantara insert but because the wiring harness was glued onto the circuit board I immediately decided to wait until my warranty has worn out (as I suggest anyone else looking to do anything significant to follow suit).

Thanks for any and all input. Haven't put much up lately with all the hoopla with the Elites. :sly:

Nice stuff. It is pricey, though.

If I could afford the Elite I would already have ordered it lol. Congrats if you have one.

If you find it for the right price it isn't too bad. I want to say I got 10 or 11 sq ft for about $80.... I could be off by a bit. I covered the base of my Playseat, the aluminum of the pedal base, and messed around with bits on my homemade tv stand. Still have plenty left.

I wanted to remove everything off the aluminum rim face... but after breaking the rim down... Well, it's intimidating to say the least.
