Back down to earth last night after my best ever week in the Aston at la Sarthe last week.

Tried race A first, and trying to be different, went with the Impreza. Bad plan, couldn't get it to turn in properly started 8th, got up to 5th by avoiding incidents on L1, then spent the rest of the race understeering my way back down to 11th and last.

Went on to race B after that, and went with the 458, again trying to be different. Started P8, fine through the long left and the next left, on the right the GT-R in front braked right on the apex just as I was stamping on the throttle, he went faster, I went slower, and the Atenza behind was alongside into the left onto the straight. Only the slightest of side bumps, but I went out over the curb, and coming back over spun round and across the track, getting reset after hitting the wall on the other side. By the time I got to the hairpin, I was 15th and last, about 5s behind 14th. Made some good passes, watched a TT, a Scirocco and a Huracan understeer themselves into the wall at the multi apex right hander, and finally finished 1.8s behind someone carrying a 2s penalty to put me back into the 8th place I started in. Looking forward to a couple more races there this evening to try for some better results and learn the track better, DTG not being one of my best.

Race B Round 1: Grid P12 Race P8. Fairly quiet and smooth race, thought I got punted a little by the back fielders while they're busy fighting for positions. I think I accidentally hit someone off track but the server did not register anything since it seemed to be the car phasing into the corner like sci-fi. The rest is just quiet overtaking to the flag.

Race B Round 2: Grid P14 Race P6. Far astonished by what I could achieve, lapping the track from low 42s to a flat 40. Lots of clean overtaking, held on to 6th place for 2 laps until I went a little wild on the last lap, losing precious seconds of gap. A little refocus and it's a clear cut winner and pulling off down the main straight to the finish.

So far Race B has proven to be a lot less fun than I expected, and Race C a lot more fun than expected.

I always struggle with Gr.4 though. The whole race seems to be about maintaining momentum which means not getting drawn off the racing line unless absolutely necessary and not making ANY mistakes. Lost time seems near impossible to make up.

That's probably true of all groups but just seems exaggerated (for me) in Gr.4. I'm sure if I sort out the consistency I'll have more fun :)

Had a good first Monza experience yesterday in my trusted Lexus. There's so much time to be made up at Ascari and Parabolica, I think I can get 5 secs off qualy with those two alone.

Had a good battle with a McLaren. On replay I saw I saw I accidentally offed him in a chicane on the first lap, so if you're on here gman4fun I apologize. Then it was just us two by the end and I think the brakes on the McLaren allowed me to take him on the inside of the final corner, final lap. Thrilling.

So far I've spent most of my time this week on race b. I really want to try C but so far I am having fun at gardens. Monza is a little bit daunting for me. For B I've been using the Genesis/Huracan/458. If I spend some more time qualifying I could drop my time some more. I set it with the genny but I should probably just qualify in the huracan.

Also why do I suddenly get pop up ads that cover my screen everytime I load a gtp page on my phone? Never happened before today.

Been steadily rebuilding my SR rating on race C after dropping from an S to a C last week at La Sarthe. Just got a Red A after being punted by a DR S rated driver at T1. I expected better from an S! ;)

Woah... Where's the penalty zone at Monza then? I'm guessing by some of these comments it isn't in the logical place between Ascari and Parabollica?

Race ruiner?

Morning race at Tsukuba. QT same as yesterday, 1:04.783. Got me 3rd spot. Finished 2nd. Clean race but really bad lag.

Car in front jumped about 5 car lengths a few times. Freaky. P1 went off on the 4th lap, pretty sure it was due to lag on P2. So lucky me I guess.

How do I get stuck in these ruts where I can't match my Q lap from day 1? I spent the last hour and a half trying to better my time at Tsukuba, and couldn't even match the time I set yesterday on my 5th lap. This happens pretty often. I don't know why. :banghead:

I dunno. I used NSX today to qual for my daily bonus. I didn’t put the optimal together but even optimal was I think around a second behind your qual.
I found the same thing last week. I’d have sessions where Im stringing together high .58 low 59 for like ten eleven laps so easy.
Next I’m running a minute flat and higher.
What I found was getting a foot offline could cost way more than you think.
You can have the car at the limit but not be getting it set at the right places so you won’t have as much control or speed.
Sometimes I think for sanity you just have to turn off your brain and drive your best and let the chips fall or let it happen I guess.
Like for myself in race am I driving my qual line? No way I am driving a reliable line that repeats and emphasizes top speed on straights, driving the limit in an optimal line repeatedly is very very difficult.
I know I’ve never done it. I’ve strung together parts of laps at best.
I think it’s best to set a reasonable qual and go race.
The times you see on top are a result of a tremendous amount of time into the game.
For me at least I’m just never going to invest that. And I love this game.
Gotta just do my best and let it sort itself out.
Killed myself on qual last week. Very very rare for me. Not gonna make this a third job.

A lot like golf or any other thing where you actively look for improvement. It's all mental. Happens to everyone, except freaks of nature. Being challenging is all part of the appeal.

But in your specific case, it's because you don't use a wheel. :p:sly:

Tsukuba is a fun little track to hot lap in cars that are N300 and below, but it's a pretty lousy track to race on. Very difficult to pass on, unless you hit someone or they go off track, or both.

I think today, I was trying too hard to power through the turns. Yesterday, I was taking it a bit more easy. Watching Lester and Matt Jones' replays this morning, it looks they're just rolling through the turns, spending a lot of time off throttle. Next time I try it, I think I'll try to have less noise coming from my tires.

But in your specific case, it's because you don't use a wheel.
Matt Jones uses a controller. :p The only driving adjustment I'll make, going forward, is to someday work on getting comfortable with using the L2/R2 triggers, so I can trail brake and use partial throttle.

It's right after Lesmo 2 on the way to Ascari. Narrow track with a kink in the road, not a good spot to have a bunch of cars slowed down with different penalty times. It's fine when you start in the top (and not have a penalty) but in the back you get to deal with a bunch of ghosts about to turn solid traveling at different speeds. It adds some extra excitement after the chaos of the first 2 chicanes

Yep, together with the Mac it's the meta this week. BOP isn't very balanced at all. 7 GT-Rs in the next race and 3 MacLaren BMWs.

Hmm, might try something other than the GTR, then. Maybe I'll go back to the RSR. Seemed to keep up with faster stuff pretty well at Kyoto. Provided it has the slipstream, of course.

On race B I have been getting matched with pretty tough crowd at B/S. Handful of A and S drivers and a full field of solid Bs and names I recognize so not much chance of a win for me, mostly keeping the back of the pack honest. The field has stayed close together at least in the early stages and clean racing throughout or apologies afterwards. In other words, quite enjoyable despite mostly running 10th+/-

I did have one good run converting a 4th place start to the same finish. The Sirrocco is a terror through corners but will usually lose a drag race, aaand then they’re going backwards in your mirror in the braking zone. Staying in front of an A driver in a Viper for a couple of laps (cleanly I hope) was the highlight of my morning.

I keep stubbornly rising in dr B even though I feel I’m punching above my weight a bit.

Yesterday I only did qualifying for race C. 1.47.1 was a good sold effort. Optimal was a 46.8 but just could set an actual lap in the 46's

Anyway today I ventured into the race today. Started 7th in first one. List slipstream early so went for undercut on lap 4 and messed up the first corner on exit from pits so when top 6 pitted I was 2 seconds down. Cue lonely run to 7th.

Next race I moved BB to +3 from +1. My tyre wear was poor in first race which is unusual for me. Started this one 6th and this time I was in the slipstream of the top group, so saved fuel as one car spun, one got punted and another got a penalty. So third as we all pit. I over fuel so I can push.

Come out 4th as the punted car who only lost a couple of seconds uses the undercut to pass me. 1st 2nd are about 3 seconds up road from me and 3rd place but battling. We catch by start of lap 8 and I let them go at it waiting on inevitable mistakes. 3rd loses it out of the first chicane on last lap and I'm right on the battling 1st and 2nd.

Last lap, last corner I make my move into parabolica, clean pass on 2nd and better traction than the leader but line just comes too soon to get the win.

Great race and the 2.5k DR moves me to an A+ for first time ever!!
