I'm ok with it now.
I was a little upset for a day or two but only because i was used to not lifting off the accelerator. These aren't race cars, they don't get a new clutch for every race, their gearbox's are built to last (relatively) and flat shifting is just not something that could be done as often as we were doing it before the update. Sure, you could do it a few times maybe, then the clutch would start to slip and either lose all its 'grab' and you'd be out of the race, or it would go 'bang' and you'd be out of the race.
As sucky as it would seem, without the ability to damage the cars and clutches specifically, it is more realistic to be lifting off when changing gears, in unmodified road cars at least.
After using it for a few weeks i can't see a huge disadvantage anyway. There is a chance of missing a gear that the people using other wheels and controllers don't have but thats the same with the clutch anyway. I don't bother with the drifting but i can imagine the problems there, still, with a few exceptions these are road cards and would not stand up to that kind of treatment for long without braking and until they can brake, its far more realistic to lift off. It doesn't feel any slower to me, though its not really possible to make a direct comparison with the grip physics being so better than pre-update.
Too me, it feels like something thats been done in preparation for future changes to the game (damage etc..) and if thats the case, its better for it to be done now than later.
