Except that you can't. He's got four arms, so that makes him a Spider Pirate - and Bungie have said that players can only take on the role of a Guadian of the City.

I'm still wanting to know why the bad guys look like the good guys in terms of armor, and why they all seem to be armored in some way or another.

A lot of story telling to do here! I can't wait to play it.

Apparently each of the enemy factions don't necessarily get along with each other. They're likely to be at war with one another just as much as they are with humanity.

Coming from a guy who normally only plays sports games, GT, and the occasional CoD/GTA, this sounds amazing.

To me, it sounds like Skyrim with other people.

Intruiged by this, but it doesn't really make sense for it to be on the PS3/360 instead of the next-gen consoles, which will be out when the game is released. Still, I hope it is available for PS3, because I don't plan on purchasing a PS4 anytime soon.

Interesting.
I am led to believe that the decision to restrict players to human characters was made so that Bungie would have more control over the direction of the narrative. They don't want to create a universe where it's just a case of humans fighting other player factions, but rather one where there is an actual narrative for players to follow. No doubt the nature of the Traveler, the events of the Collapse, and the origins and intentions of the various factions that have mysteriously appeared on the fringes of the galaxy will all be explored - but if you could play as a Vex, or a spider pirate, or a zombie, or as one of the Cabal, or as one of the "FOTC" (believed to be a faction of Guardians of the City) then there would be much less scope for that narrative to explore, and much less freedom in the way it gets implemented.

It will be on PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360. It's also believed that Destiny will appear on the next Xbox, but since that hasn't been formally launched, this cannot be confirmed.

Bungie obviously don't want to ostracise people who want to play the game, but cannot afford a next-generation console.

The problem with that is that it contradicts the story of DESTINY. The whole idea behind DESTINY is that humanity narrowly avoided its own extinction, and is now consolidating its position in the galaxy while hostile alien threats start working their way towards earth. The players take on the role of "Guardians of the City", so they are all effectively allied. To have factions springing up and fighting each other will endanger mankind's future, so I doubt it's going to be anything like that.

I'd say it's more likely that any in-fighting among the players is going to arise at the very fringes of the galaxy. Humankind is starting to explore its former colonies, which went into decline during "the Collapse". Nobody seems to know what the Collapse was, so I'm guessing that a large part of the story is going to revolve around what actually happened during the Collapse that led to mankind's decline. There's probably going to be some evidence out there that players find, which opens up plenty of potential for factional fighting: do you make public what you find, and potentially cause panic on earth? Or do you keep it to yourself until you find more evidence to support your theory of what happened, or disprove it?

That way, the fighting would be limited to skirmishes on the edges of the galaxy, but as Bungie start revealing more evidence in future updates or releases, more and more people would start joining factions.

Let's not so readily dismiss Crispy's speculation, because at this point, we really don't know what Bungie plans on doing, and both Crispy and your descriptions/ideas could very well be a direction they could take (Crispy's is less likely, of course). But to say that such a thing goes against the ideals of Destiny assumes that everything that happens is locked into place to a degree that we really don't know. I'd like to think that, after hearing and reading and seeing some of the ideas they're talking about, Crispy's speculation could readily be possible.

But the important part, is that it wouldn't necessarily go against what Destiny is about. The Covenant were trying to expand and establish themselves in the Galaxy and they had a massive shift in alliances through half of their forces which caused a civil war among their soldiers.

But an even better example would have to be the Horus Heresy (from Warhammer 40k, Gamesworkshop's lore-filled table top warfare game). In 40k, a similar situation happens to humans, with the planet earth suddenly being cut off from their vast empire amongst the stars by a "Warp Storm". After the storm cleared, Humanity was lead back out to reclaim their worlds by "The Emperor". The Emperor created 20 genetically altered sons which were suddenly scattered out into the stars that he had to find.

Well he set out with armies that were modeled in each of his son's image and genetic makeup, and upon reclaiming the human worlds (unlike Destiny, humanity was still alive and thriving, but they were cut off from each other), he would occasionally find one of his "Primarch" sons, who had all gone on to do amazing feats and unite the world's populations that they had landed on. As the human Empire re-grew, half of the sons turned on the other half in Heresy, lead by Horus (thus, the Horus Heresy). I apologize if you're already familiar with 40k lore!

Anyways, it's not like something similar couldn't happen with a huge group of determined individuals!

EDIT: Although, for this to all happen, it would be under the assumption that the name of the game is meant to have a different meaning, or that it is used ironically.

I see Crispy's speculation as styling Destiny after a world like EVE Online, where there is no real story to it - there's just player factions fighting for control over territory. based on what Bungie have said, I get the distinct impression that this is what they are trying to avoid.

It could possibly be part of an Olympic Games kind of thing, where nobody actually kills each other. How would they do this? A leftover holo-room is a possibility, but I think that is just a cheap way for making that work.

There is something called Faction Wars though. What it is is not 100% clear but a lot of speculation goes to it being the Competitive Multiplayer playlist Bungie promised.

By what it looks like, the chapters might be Dungeons. Dungeons seem to be where our story Backbone is going to be. Bounty might be similar to Weekly Challenges from Halo: Reach, or assassinations of high ranking enemies. Raids are probably for getting rare items, similar to WoW. That leaves Faction Wars and Strike.

I was just about to post that video. The last pick looks almost identical to one of the levels in Halo 4 in a good way. The armor does look great. Highly detailed.

It's a little difficult to tell, seeing as how it's all done in time-lapse, but that program actually looks fairly intuitive to use. I wonder if Bungie intend to ship it as a kind of level editor?

Yes thats right up there with the Far Cry map maker which IMO is THE best map making system out there. The map maker "Forge" in the Halo games is okay but we really need something like this. Hopefully it is indeed released with the game for the community to mess with. Halo forge just doesnt cut it. Hopefully Bungie finally took the next step.

Bungie’s Destiny to Feature SpeedTree

Gamasutra
SpeedTree is designed to help developers create real-time trees and plants with "seamless" LOD transitions, as well as offering lighting, physics and wind effects.

The tech also includes an SDK that can be programmed to support any level of engine integration.

Destiny, Bungie’s highly anticipated mythic science-fiction action universe, will integrate SpeedTree for Games into its futuristic worlds to enhance one of the title’s artistic themes of nature ascending over mankind’s lost worlds.

We’re very pleased that Bungie chose to feature SpeedTree in Destiny’s unique vision of overgrown futuristic worlds,” notes Michael Sechrest, President of SpeedTree developer Interactive Data Visualization, Inc. “Bungie had very specific needs and challenges for Destiny, including scalability from current to next-generation hardware. SpeedTree was designed with these sorts of requirements in mind.

E3 here today! All those looking for information should check back during this thread during or after the Sony presentation. Bungie announced on their homepage here that they will only show at Sony's Press Conference. This means no Xbox One gameplay just yet.

Was not interested one bit in this until the gameplay video. Now I'm very interested and it may have sold a buddy who had no intentions on buying a PS4 on getting one when Destiny comes out.

I realize this is Bungie so it makes sense the gameplay reminds me of Halo a lot. In a good way.

Anyone else notice what they said when they arrived at that old city in the Gameplay Reveal? They called it, Old Russia. Hopefully we're able to explore the entire planet, as that is what they've been hinting at! This game is going to be great, I feel almost like everything they tried out in ODST and Reach was almost like a Beta for this game, to see which concepts stuck and which didn't.

I never played Halo, but "Nova Bomb" sounds like a weapon my friends would talk about while discussing it.

Have you guys seen the demo IGN posted today? This went from a Christmas gift to myself into a pre-order, holy mother... The scale of the landscape, the shooting, it looks so slick.
