DFGT Full Carbon Fiber Faceplate Wrap

Alright, so I was able to completely take apart the front part of my wheel last night. I was pretty nervous because you have to remove the motherboard and all of the buttons. I had watched several installation videos of the 3M wrap so I was pretty confident going in...I shouldn't have been. The DFGT faceplate has several really difficult corners and round edges, and unfortunately it didn't turn out as great as I had originally imagined. Also, because I tucked the vinyl wrap into the holes on the faceplate, the buttons no longer push down smoothly. I'm understanding now why people have either painted it or done the decal like Granturgismo.

I might try again sometime, but for the time being I'll have to remove it and make sure the thing still works.

So, as I mentioned before, I attempted a full vinyl wrap of the faceplate, and let's just say it didn't turn out as well as I hoped. I've gone ahead and removed the crap job I did on the faceplate and then decided to just accent a few parts with the carbon fiber vinyl. I wrapped the DFGT nameplate, the shifter paddles, and the gear shift lever.

For those of you wanting a carbon fiber faceplate, I would go with Granturgismo's decal kit when they're ready. I have a feeling they will be relatively easy to install and you can already see they look great.

Did you take pictures of the actual disassembling process?

I've got one pic of the inside of the wheel. I can post it if you like, but the disassembly was actually very straightforward. The reason why I was having trouble taking it apart before was because my Granturgismo shifter paddles were covering two screws. Once I removed the paddles and those screws, I had no problems. But here are the steps to disassemble it:

1. Flip the entire unit over
2. Unscrew the nut on the bottom of the gear shift lever
3. Remove all screws from the bottom of the case
4. Flip unit upright and pull top of case off along with the shifter
5. Remove all screws from the back of the wheel (There are 3 on the side spokes, 4 on the bottom spoke, and then 3 that attach it to the center of the wheel)
6. Gently pull faceplate off and unplug the wire cable
7. Remove the two black screws that hold on the silver DFGT name plate and all silver screws that hold on the motherboard
8. Gently pull motherboard from the faceplate
9. Remove all buttons except the red wheel (this seemed pretty stuck on there and I didn't want to pull harder and break it)

That's it. Very tedious, but pretty straightforward. After wrapping a few parts in carbon vinyl and putting it all back together, I just tested the wheel and everything works perfectly.

Hey guys,

Even though I completely failed at doing my own one-piece carbon fiber wrap, I decided to try again using Granturgismo's kit. The vinyl itself seems to be a different brand than the 3M DiNoc I used before, but it still looks good. The weave is a littler smaller. The best thing about this kit is that every piece is precision cut. It still took me a couple tries to place some of the pieces perfectly, but it was still way easier than trying to wrap it all with a single piece of vinyl like I did before. I'll post some more pictures later but here's a quick teaser.

My next mod will be to color the light-up logo red and blue.
