DiRT Rally Thread

The challenge of this game is the fun part. Coming from GT, where the AI is rather sad, this game makes me work for every tenth of a second. I'm talking elevated heart rate and sweating. Good times!
I just need to learn to let the car slide a little more. I can't enter turns like I have been doing in GT for the past 18 years. Once I get passed that mind block, I should post much better times.
What a fantastic game.

My experience, is like in most driving games, go early in the corner, and try too be as smooth as possible. Yes you have to slide some to go really fast, but almost all guys go in the corner too fast in the beginning, me too, its really hard not too, but when you finally get a grip around the physics, and how complex it is, then you can really start too play.

It is different for everybody, but for me, I learned much more from learning every turn of pikes peak, after I mastered that track, I was really suprised how much more control i got in every car in regular rally.

I can't be the only one that gets slightly creeped out by the attempt at emulating humanism in the co-driver's voice. I find it eerily realistic that he sometimes clears his throat, and stutters over some calls, that he doesn't do again when the same calls arise upon restarting the stage...
The voice is Paul Coleman's, the game director ;)There again, as he is a manager, emulating human qualities is par for the course :)

The length they've gone with the co-driver's calls is brilliant and frankly, miles ahead of anything else I've encountered in rally games. The way Paul reacts to your driving as well bumps is a nice touch and makes for a genuinely authentic experience unlike other games.

After we have written, checked and double checked the notes we set about recording them. In the past we have recorded the calls with an actor in a recording studio but to try and get a better sense of being in the cockpit we have rigged up a Stilo Intercom System in our D-Box room. I wear my crash helmet and sit in the D-Box chair. It’s a motion seat so every bump, dip and crest in the stage is transferred through the seat and into my body. It’s subtle but the faster sections are reflected through the intensity of the calls and things tend to get calmer when the car is going through some of the slower sections.

Perhaps the best part is that through the bumpier sections you can really hear the compressions in the stage coming through in my voice. Its pretty rough having to do multiple runs through the stages over the course of an hour with the D-Box turned up to the maximum but I think it has been totally worth it for the overall game experience. In fact, all of this virtual practise made me a better co-driver when went back out on stage in Somerset Stages on the 18th April.

Anybody got any tips on driving the Supercars in RX? I really can't gel with them, they just don't seem to bit at the front end for me. I think part of my problem is trying to drive them like I would a normal Tarmac circuit racing car.

No sorry, I have not yet made it to them, but once I do I will happily share.

So it seems just the Rally Cross 1600's are crazy hard

I ended up winning the Open championship for 1970's rally in the Escort and I won the first 2 championships in Hill Climb with the Peugeot 405. Really really liking this game and have adjusted nicely to the pace notes as well.

Not sure what rally car to get next... Group B / 2000's or the modern ones!!

Choices....

Got back to it after 2 weeks of Uncharted 4 and i do not why i was super fast compared to my low-end standards. I won the RX championship with a Polo not fully upgraded and then won the first Montercarlo stage with a Focus 01 in 2000s championship with 20 seconds lead. But the most incredible thing is that i didn't crashed at all. Off course tonight i will suck again but at least i got few trophies.

i found them very easy to drive and i drove on tarmac like project cars and on dirt without even thinking, super drifts.

Which one are you driving? They're all very different machines.

Overall... brake in straight lines. Use the handbrake less than you'd think, use the torque and weight transfer instead. If you must, little dabs of handbrake instead of gert big Kenny Block grabs. Watch power oversteer as they have a habit of letting go quite dramatically. Off-tarmac you can use the throttle more to adjust to yaw of the car.

So thought I'd better spend some time with the Rally X......... oh, wow.....

How much joy is the Rally X!! Those Mini's is just game heaven right there! Yes its hard but boy is it rewarding learning how to tackle the tracks. Wonderful just wonderful.
That is all.

I've given up on messing around with the Supercars in free mode and gone back to my career in the S1600 Clio. Now I'm braking earlier and being smoother I'm getting quicker ever race. Just had adjust the set up a lot to make the rear stiff and the front softer so it helps on turn in.

After going to Lydden on Sunday it's really made me enjoy the RX in the game more. Can't wait till I can afford a Supercar.

i think the polo is the best RX supercar. I mean, i won the RX championship the first attempt with it and surely i'm not a good driver so it must be the top-one. I had only to brake in straight line and take proper jokers. (i do not even open set-up table)

I'm not a huge fan of the Polo. I struggled a bit with the setup and no matter what, it never felt quite right. The Fiesta and the 208 handled beautifully though.

Enough DiRT Rally for me today :embarrassed:

I have over the last few days developed a love and hate relationship for the Peugeot 405 T16. It silly fast but it just wants to understeer like a pig, most noticeably in the first two sectors. Considering how some of the road signs have been (deliberately) placed as well the crowds and bumps on Pikes Peak (Gravel), it's a recipe for plenty of rage. Tweaking the setup has helped a lot but still not as good as the Audi.

Just a few positions short of placing myself in the top 10 now though.

What setup have you got for that 405?

I'll share my setup tomorrow, but off the top off my head I'm running with 0° camber both at the back and front. I also lowered the ride height to 7.25(?), I believe. That alone improved the handling far more than I thought it would've. Though, I think I might need to play around with the differential some more.

Cheers @MXH

I weakened the front and middle differential quite a lot for the Dirt setup as this helped turn in immensely. I Haven't touched much more than that though still finding it very tough in the really tight stuff, might need more rear brake bias so I can slide into the corners sideways.

Can't say I've noticed it.

One thing I have noticed that's disappointing is that ai cars not in your session in the quali heats and semi finals always go slower than you and the cars you race against on track.

After an hours play all i can say is its insanely hard. Hit restart about 30 times while it was installing.

Had a quick shot of career and was awful n recked my car so retired and came out to practice outside career. Hit a custom championship and any time i restart its taking a 1000 off of me wtf is that about? Ibdont see any practice mode?

It take 1,000 away from your final price money, not straight out of your account.

Slow down, pay attention to the pace notes and short shift. It takes a fair bit of practice to use the full range of each gear and speed will come with practice.

With actual rallying (as opposed to RX) always start off slow and just listen to the notes (best to put them on early so you get them well before the corners). Brake early and power out of the corners.
