Disable Flashing Gear Change Indicator! *Success!*

I don't think it's that bad, I don't even see how it can throw drivers off either because it tells you when to brake and what gear to change to, if you're so annoyed by it, why don't you just turn HUD off?

except for the fact that it tells you to brake too early and even when you dont need yo, and tells you to use too low a gear. as many people just blindly rely on them it realy limits their growth and learning as a driver. as bad as having the driving line aid turned on imho.

I remember back in Gran Turismo 4, you could turn it off. To Set it off Options > Display > Mode(Simple). All information will be removed from your screen with the exception of REV/SPEED METER.

I remember in GT4 I got fed-up enough with the FGCI that I put a square of masking tape on the TV screen to cover it. It actually worked really well. My eyes adjusted quickly so as to not notice the little square on the screen and my enjoyment of the game went up dramatically.
It's kind of sad that in 2011 you'd still have to revert to such a silly technique, but give it a try. It really works. And it will work far better than waiting for GT9 when they make removing the FGCI an option.

I do support the request, that the "suggested gear/brake"-indicator should be an option you can turn on or off.

To me, the indicator is an unwanted driving-aid, just like the driving-line, and I would like to be able to turn it off...
And as for "the most realistic driving simulator" I havn't been able to find that particullar indicator in my REAL car.. :sly:

It has MY vote on the feedback-page..!

Not sure how the game would be improved by removing it? PD should spend their time on other stuff that makes the game better for everyone. Is it worth complaining about things like this?

I happen to think it isn't noticeable enough.

It should be replaced by one of those gigantic obnoxious Auto-meter yellow flashing lights that look like those on a cop car when they go off.

yeeehaw!

It would improve to those who doesn't like to have to see that "not-available-in-real-life"-indicator on the screen..
Don't you think?

Off topic:
Do you only see OP's post in the thread as a complaint?? I don't see it as that, but mere an(other) request for a (perhabs minor) change to improve the experience to at least some of the users... And a plea to others with same experience to unite and make a feedback-thread to PD.
He is not just saying: "This is ****..." (that would be just complaining), but we discuss politley what and how to change it...

Are "we", as community, the ones who decide what PD will have to fix, add or improve in the game??
No... We are not.. Only PD are, but fortunatly, I think, they DO listen to their customers...

So here, in the community, we should ALL be allowed to report, suggest and discuss elements in the game, that we feel would improve our game-experience.
And this particullar subject is one (but not the only) detail, that will be able to improve the experience for me..!
I don't tell any one else, that they can't discuss what THEY feel would be an important improvement to the game.. Do I?

So Rob.. or any one else..:
Can you tell us, or even better tell PD, what single thing to change/fix in GT5, so that "everyone" see it as THE BEST improvement to the game..?? (and "everyone" as in all 6.3 millions that bought the game)

I can't, but I do think that PD should be able to get input from as many as posssible, and then they would have to evaluate the feedback and hopefully implement those requests, that they feel would improve the game to the most of the users, in accordance with PD's philosophy for the game.
/Off topic..

And let us now focus on the threads intention, a feedback to PD about this issue, that some few of us would like to be able to turn it off in an option-setting...

It is not like we want it to totally go away, just an option to enable/disable it on screen...
I am sure, it is a good driving-aid for beginners, or for those who can't find the prober braking-spots on their own, or don't know in what gear they could safely enter the corner.. :sly:

totally agree, this flashing indicator in actually an assist same as automatic gear or traction control, for those who dont think so please try to hide it (and the red gear indicator also) and compare your lap times with that indicator on, i feel it is really important to remove it or keep it as option at least, i usually put smatt sticker on that part of screen, in real life driving you dont have indicator telling you where exactly you have to break, good drivers should be able to approximate this distance, and yes this make big difference

Who cares, I can hear when i have to change the gear anyway.

Among others, I do care.. :D

💡 For clarifycation... It is NOT the small "change gear up/high revs"-light that we are talking about..

It is the "red number" that lights up, next to your "current gear", with a suggestion for the appropiate choice of gear for the next corner... and the whole number is flashing red, when the game recon you are coming to fast into the corner..

I loved the fact it could be turned off with the simple HUD option in GT4. I for one would welcome this option returning.

I believe as a player of Gran Turismo from the beginning not having the indicator makes learning the courses more important and more rewarding for that.

Fair enough some folk don't care very much about it but for the folk that do like to take their gaming a bit more seriously, I see nothing wrong with asking for the option.

The good thing about the gear indicator is it tells you the gear you want to be above in the corners.

I've learned to ignore it while driving. Also keep my HUD off when I'm driving Premium Cars.

That being said, a modular HUD option would be nice, where you can turn off individual stuff you don't need:)

Yes, the option to completely customize the HUD would be good, I always drive with the HUD off, but I couldn't drive like this in a endurance race, because you cannot see how many fuel you have left.

Should PD implement an option to turn it off/on. Yes.
Priority. No.

I rather hope PD will waste more time render more premium and track rather than doing something minor as this.

You can always listen to the engine rythm. You don't need to see it.

But if it's annoyed you. Just take some tape and paste it to where the FGCI be. :P

PD patched the Nurburgring the glitch, and reduced the increased payout for races. It's not like they have priorities anyway.

Making the indicator optional, or even better giving us a more customizable HUD [what purpose does seeing driver names/flags above cars serve? And why is the driver list right over my mirror when I drive in cockpit view?] would be a much more valuable update than either thing listed above.

This is worth asking for. It seems simple enough to fix, and there is some portion of players who would like to see the issue fixed.

Apparently, the only information i need displayed is fuel level. Desirables in addition to that are the rev and speed meters.
Of course, if we're talking priorities, the entire back-catalog of race tracks is my no.1.

I think it would be better even if the FGCI would remain solid and not start flashing. I think that since most people that use it for braking brake a certain amount of time after it starts flashing (or if not fully alert, as soon as it is seen flashing), if it didn't flash I and others wouldn't find themselves subconsciously using it.

What sort of driver are you that you would get fatigued driving in a game? Just press pause and get some sleep or maybe find a game thats not so mentally challenging, In a real car do you get distracted by the green light on your dasboard when turning a corner and crash in to things? I use engine note to change gear its very easy when you get used to it the car gets faster and when it cant get any faster it hits the rev limiter this is a good indictor that you need to change gear and exactly the same thing happens if you change down a gear to early. Leave it there it makes no difference to proper drivers.

A normal driver? Is it not reasonable to become tired while playing a video game? Especially when playing in the evening... I also find it can be straining on the eyes to be looking at a screen for an extended period of time.

I liked that when you set the HUD to Simple in GT4 the gear & brake indicator wasn't on screen anymore. It's just one of the many great things they added to one game only to mindlessly abandon it in the next, PD haven't got a great deal of common sense have they!

Yeah... last night I was online driving hudless @ Nordschleife at night. It was awesome but I lost most races because my sub-conscious is too used to watch the damn blinking red number :(

More fool you, is it really that bad?

The way some people have gone on in this thread you would think it's a game breaker.

Seems to me like too many people in this thread are getting the gear indicator confused with the FGCI. I personally would love the option to turn it of as we had in GT4.

As it is now, our only choice is to turn everything but the map off if we wanna get rid of it. But I like being able to see what gear I'm in and the tacho as well. It's all well and good saying 'use you ears to tell what revs/ gear you're in, but if the only chance you get to play GT is when everyone's in bed (missus and baby), sometimes you can't have the volume up loud enough to do that. And when you're in the heat of battle online, it can be hard to remember what gear you're in.

It's really not that difficult from a programming point of view to make it an option to turn it off. I know there are more important things that need fixing, but the OP was only making the suggestion. I really don't see why there's so much hate.

Yeah, the way it was on GT4 was great... I agree with you!

WTFPD, WTF. Yes there should be an OPTION to turn it off. People who disagree with having more options or greater control over your HUD have issues.

Also when they say "I'd rather see them take time on bigger things"

Honestly, how much work would it take to put that small option?
